645 Tilt Shift

I wonder if an A35 could somehow be cobbled together to make at least a tilt lens with a little shift given that doesn't have cover the entire 60 x 45mm (56 x 41.5mm) frame but should be able to cover the 645D or Z frame (44 x 33mm). Just wondrin'

I had the Rubinar 500mm f5.6 but I don't think I had a good copy. It was very soft. I eventually got a Pentax 400/5.6 adn this was much sharper.

Anyone give up on 645D?

The Hartblei which is have is an Arsat based 45mm lens also called a Mir. It also has quite a bit of sharpness fall-off at the edges even without shifting., If I recall correctly, it will drop down to 15 lp/mm at the edges. I don't have the Nikon 24 TS to test it against but it seems from general reports to be the sharper option of the two TS lens. And also the 45mm lens use is limited a little bit more when used on the slightly cropped sensor of the 645D while the 24mm stays a 24mm on the Nikon.

And along with the lens I can also divest myself of a Coolscan 8000ED scanner.

Anyone give up on 645D?

I haven't really given up on the 645D but selling stuff to bankroll the body plus a 25mm is going much slower than I had thought. In the meantime along comes the D800 which will require serious rethinking of my plan. I have a bagsful of lenses (FA 33-55, FA 35, A 35, FA 45, A 55, FA 45-85, A 80-160, A 120, A 150, FA150, A 200, FA 200, A 300, FA 400, Arsat 30mm, Hartblei 45 SR TS, and Practicar 500mm) which I have been collecting for the new body as well as a couple of 645 N I bodies. If I sell all my Pentax stuff and add the money that was going to go for the 645D body, I think I can get a D800 plus 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, 24TS plus some plane tickets. The reason for this serious consideration is mostly because I Iike wide angle landscapes in the 18mm to 28mm range, and the 24mm TS will be better than my Hartblei TS. Also I think live view is almost indispensable.

Anyone try an Arsat 30mm

For the money these lens are a pretty good deal for a lens you don't use too often. I haven't used mine for a while but I recall that I have stop it down a lot to get a sharp picture, especially at the edges. I think F11 or F16 is probable the best aperture. I get better results with the 4/3rds 8mm, which BTW is spectacular either wide open or stopped down, and sharp from edge to edge. I also have the old Zuiko 16mm which is pretty good but also not used much because of the edges and corners and light falloff (which is unavoidable).

Which 45mm for 645?

I have both the Harblei (same glass inside as the Mir I think) as well as the Pentax 45mm. I haven't compared them side by side but the 45mm from Pentax isn't the sharpest Pentax lens although entirely usable. It probably my most used focal length.

My Hartblei has to be stopped down to f11 or f16 for best sharpness.

Tripod collar for 645 300/4A*

A long time ago-20- years or so-Really Right Stuff custom made one but I've never seen one for sale. Your best bet might be the Manfrotto telephoto lens support. On theother hand, other people have tested this on a tripod and despite all of it's awkwardness, it does not show the effect of camera shake much at all, even at the difficult speeds of 1/8 to 1/30.

Pentax 645N or NII? Advice needed

I don't have one but I think that with the NII they fixed a slight problems with the 645N. Because the N allows 16 shots per roll, if you put film in the camera and let it sit, it would create a slight curl in the film so that when you took the second shot after letting it sit, that shot after you wind it would not have perfect film flatness. For the NII there was a user changeable setting that would allow you to change the frames per roll from 16 to 15, which fixes this problem. If you realize that the second shot after letting the camera sit might have film flatness problems, this should be your f8 or f11 shot.

That seems to work pretty well. I have the Oly 4/3 system with the 35 and 50 macro lens and I want to try this as my Coolscan 8000ED just died. Or I can save a $1000 toward a 645D by not getting a new scanner.

I have one and tried to use it on the 300/4 EDIF but either due to my poor technique, wiggly tripod, wind or whatever, it wasn't that sharp. Instead I have a Pentacon 500/5.6, which is the size of a large drainpipe, but works much better than the 300 + 2x combo.

Any experience on Pentax 645 135mm f/4.0 LS -- Leaf Shutter

I may be all wrong here but I thought that the 75LS and 135LS worked just like a regular manual focus automatic diaphragm lens if you didn't cock the shutter. If this is true, then you should be able to sync the flash to the camera from the sync speed of 1/60 and slower. With the LS you have 1/60 and faster. That's why there is no slow speed shutter train in the LS lens--not needed.

I doubt that Pentax changed it's mirror and shutter assemblies too much from the 645N II, and especially the shock absorbing capabilities.

After Market Hoods for 645 Lenses

I used to have the A 35mm hood and it was pretty much useless as being too big and flopppy. Instead I hot glued a medium sized plastic bowl onto a 77mm Cokin adapter (using lots of glue), and cut it out for a rectangular photo. I'll post a pic if I can find it but am now using the FA 35mm with a proper hood that I had to buy from Japan.

The 55mm takes a RH-B-58 while the 75mm takes a RH-A-58 hood. But a generic will work fine for these non-wide angle lens. I wouldn't get one of those multiangle hoods for 55mm and 75mm because with the viewfinder showing only 89% or so you might end up with some vignetting on the neg or trans.

Titl shift lens for the 645D

I have a couple of these, the original tilt/shift 45 Hartblei and the newer Hartblei Super Rotator TS 45mm. There are a couple of problems in using the TS lens that have nothing to do with the lens and how wide it is but have to do with the viewfinder of the P645 which only shows something like 89% or 85% of the picture taken. So you tilt and shift, compose and focus, and when you get the slide or negs back you have found out that you lost a good chunk of your composition to vignetting due to the shift and the limited viewfinder. Of course you don't see any less that what you shot but you've lost a great deal of real estate. I will be glad to get the 645D which apparently has a 100% viewfinder.

5P cable for LS lenses?

Hi Smolk,

I think all you need is one of those hot shoe(female) to PC cord adapter and a hot shoe(male) to 5P adapter. There is no automation at all with the LS lens other that to fire the flash. The central pin of the hot shoe adapter I think is the same for all cameras. Check out the hot shoe adpater F and and hot shoe adapter FG.

Found Gold in a Pawnshop Pentax 645 and a Surprise

I hate to advocate waste but I just leave the lens cap on and run through the rest of the roll when I want a different type of film. With color and B&W film running between $4 and 7 you will have to use a lot of film to pay for that extra back.

The way I shoot anyway is bracket (X3 shots) and take a couple of different angles and apertures and all of a sudden the 15 exposures are gone.

As an alternative you can, at today's prices, just buy another 645 body and insert.

Even after I get the 645D (did I just say that?), I will always carry a back up 645 anyway.

Reminds me of my first P645, which I also bought at a pawn shop. The owner and I were looking at the camera and we could not get the shutter to fire. I was bemoaning the cost of sending the body to Pentax for a repair and asked if he could knock this cost off--about $200 at that time. I paid $250 for my body plus 75mm lens.

Yours is much better of a deal.

Amateurphotographer hands on review of 645D

This review and some others bother me in that they call it a non-professional camera. I don't understand why they would say this. If it produces better images, then it is professional. I don't care if its not water protected. I tried to shoot photos with my water protected Olympus gear but I always got water on all my wide angle lens and that stopped the shooting much faster than the body would have.

You need achromatic close up lens for the best results:

Currently Available 2 Element (Achromatic) Close-up Lenses

You might have difficulty finding them though.
