Nice sharp detail and color. I like the sharp contrast between the manmade structure and sky. Pleasing lighting on the face of the structure.

I've had my K-5 since March 2011 and its shutter count is at about 26,000. I've heard the K-5 is designed to last about 200K shutter count. My K2000 is at 144,000 and still going strong.

How to Reset the File Name to 100-0001

One note to add to Aleonx3's solution. It will only work if you go to menu page 5 > Memory then uncheck the "File No" item (the last one in the list on the 2nd screen). If it is checkmarked then the camera will still retain the last file no. even if you renamed ithe one remaining file on the SD card.

I had followed Aleonx3's steps perfectly but still couldn't reset the flie name. I finally figured out that I had to uncheck that one memory item.

I have a final verdict from CRIS Camera Repair and Pentax Support regarding the fact that the K-5's audio quality is inferior to that of the K-r:

Below is the email I just got from CRIS:

"We have been in contact with Pentax for additional technical support regarding the audio for your Penrax K-5 unit. The microphone was replaced in your camera and thoroughly tested and compared to another test K-5 body, the audio was the same quality and your camera met manufacturer’s specifications before leaving our facility.
When comparing your K-5 to your K-R, while they may use the same basic microphone unit, the body shape and body material are different between the two cameras. These differences could account for a difference in the recording characteristics between the two cameras. In addition, for best audio recording quality, the Pentax K-5 has been provided with a connection for an external microphone."

So, there you go. If good audio quality using just the internal microphone is important to you then the K-r is a better choice over the K-5.

K5 for firework

mr. wizard,

The K-5 works great for fireworks. Here's a link to a gallery of fireworks photos I took this past 4th of July.

All the photos were taken using a tripod at ISO 100 with 3 or 4 sec exposures between 21mm and 28mm focal lengths and all at f10 aperture.

sjwaldron,
I'm comparing the K-r and K-5 after taking videos in the exact same room and noise environment within a couple minutes of each other. As I've said many times in this thread, my K-5's audio is, without a doubt, dramatically inferior to that of the K-r, at least that's the case with MY K-5.

I just got my K-5 back from CRIS repair today (2nd attemt to repair the audio problem). This time they completely replaced the internal microphone but the audio is still terrible compared to the K-r. Audio is not one bit better. Still sounds very muffled. However, the video feature is not that important to me. I have a real camcorder for shooting videos. So, I give up trying to fix it. A big disappointment to me though. I expect better from the K-5. Perhaps the weather sealing, as others in this thread have suggested, is the culprit but I am still flabergasted that the K-5 audio is so inferior to the K-r.

simico,

Thanks for your response. Your experience sounds similar to mine. It might be defective as well. However, as I stated in my original post, I'm looking for someone to compare audio between their K-5 and K-r. Is their K-5's audio inferior to their K-r's. If so, then apparently the K-5 audio really is inferior.

octavmandru,

You're right you don't understand the point I'm trying to make. You're comment, "It's like complaining you don't get pixel perfect pictures with the kit lens", is not analogous to my situation. The kit lens is giving the best picture possible for what it is designed to do. So, you're right, you should buy a better quality lens if you are not satisfied with the kit lens. The kit lens you talk about is not defective. It's what you get for the money. So if you don't like the kit lens then you upgrade to a better lens with a higher level of optics. However, my K-5's audio is not performing to the standard it is designed for. It is defective.

I never said I want to use my K-5 as a video camera. I don't. That's why it took me almost a year to realize there was something wrong with the audio quality because I rarely use the video feature. I have an $800 Canon video camera to take serious video.

My point is, I spent $1300 on this K-5 so the audio quality better not be defective. If I use the K-5 video feature I will be using it on the fly. It will be an unplanned use. More than likely I wouldn't have an external mic with me. In such a situation, I want the best audio the K-5 is capable of producing using the internal mic. I am not going to buy an external mic for those rare and unplanned occasions when I need to use the video.

I am also looking towards the future when I want to sell the K-5 to upgrade to something else. Defective audio lessens it's resale value. It's also difficult to sell a defective camera.

I've lost count of how many people have told me to just buy an external mic. My point is, that the K-5's inernal mic should be way better than this. It is defective. Plain and simple. My K-r's audio quality is 10x better than my K-5. I find it hard to believe that the K-5's audio quality is supposed to be this inferior to the K-r's.

My original post in this thread asked that anyone who owns both a K-5 and K-r to compare audio from the two. I would expect that their K-5's audio is not defective and that the audio should be just as good as their K-r's audio. That would confirm that my K-5 is defective. So far, no one has done such a test. Isn't there anyone in this forum who has both a K-5 and K-r??

I'm still waiting for CRIS to make a decision about my K-5. It seems to be in HOLD status right now. If CRIS tells me this is normal sound quality then I'll guess I'll just have to accept it. Like I said I rarely use the video. Otherwise, I think the K-5 is the best DSLR on the market.

Thanks IndyPhil for your video demo using the shotgun microphone vs. the internal mic. Your audio using the internal mic sounds similar to mine, maybe not so much muffled as it is quiet. The shotgun mic produces clearly much superior audio. However, I think my K-r's audio sounds almost as good as your shotgun mic audio. I still think the K-5's audio should be as good or better than the K-r's.

I returned my K-5 to CRIS camera repair. They are looking at it right now. I have a feeling they're going to tell me that the audio I'm hearing is normal. I'm going to be really disappointed though if that's the case. I didn't spend $1300 for such poor audio quality especially when the much cheaper K-r has far superior audio quality.

Babbs,
I uploaded both K-5 and K-r videos to YouTube yesterday and noticed the same blip or tick sound. I didn't hear it when playing the video on my local computer but certainly heard it on YouTube. I don't know why you can hear it when uploaded to Youtube. I don't know whether the camera or YouTube is at fault.

rawr,
This random K5 audio is far better sound quality than mine. Very loud, clear, and crisp, just like my K-r.

I just can't believe CRIS camera repair thought they had fixed it. Really sloppy work. They obviously didn't test it against a good working K-5.

I can't hear the ticking sound when played locally on my computer. YouTube seems to be causing the ticking sound.

I hadn't thought of the weather sealing causing the problem but I still find it hard to believe that Pentax's flagship DSLR would have such poor audio quality. As far as I'm concerned, the video on the K-5 is not usable if you want audio with the video. It's totally unacceptable to me.

rawr,
The K-5 audio quality is not poor because I'm using the built-in internal mic. It is poor because it seems defective. I'm sure an external mic will produce better quality sound but my point is that the sound quality of the K-r is outstanding without an external mic. The sound quality from my K-5 is terrible. It should be at least as good or better than the K-r. The K-5 audio is very muffled and quiet. The K-r audio is crystal clear and loud.

I've had the K-5 for about 10 months. Shortly after I bought it, I noticed the sound quality seemed poor. So, I bought an external mic thinking that would resolve the issue. I don't remember how much it cost but tried it and the sound quality didn't improve whatsoever. Since I didn't plan on using the video feature I wasn't too concerned and figured I just had to change some camera setting or something and I returned the mic to the store and pretty much forgot about the problem until recently when I needed to use the video.

Adam,
I'm not comparing the audio quality to a professional attached microphone. As far as I'm concerned, the audio quality on my K-r is stellar. The audio on my K-5 is very poor in comparison to my K-r. Something is defective in the K-5.

For those of you with both a K-5 and K-r ... Would you mind comparing the audio quality of the K-5 vs. K-r?

About three weeks ago I noticed that when I create a video with my K-5, the sound quality was atrocious. Very muffled and faint. I compared it to the audio quality of my K-r and there was a dramatic difference. The K-r was loud, crisp, clear. Audio was clearly superior.

I sent the K-5 to C.R.I.S. for repair. They sent it back saying they repaired the internal microphone.

However, if there is any improvement in audio quality, it is minimal. Apparently they didn't to a very thorough test after the supposed repair by comparing it to another K-5 in good working order or even a K-r. The sound is still very muffled. The K-r is still clearly superior in sound quality. I can't believe the audio quality coming from my K-5 is normal. I wish I had another K-5 for comparison.

Can't save custom image settings

Custom Image settings are not saved on my K-r. It is up to date with firmware Version 1.11.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

When I adjust custom image settings and change the values of parameters such as Sharpness or Contrast, the settings are retained as long as I don't turn the camera off. But once I turn it off then turn it back on and go into Custom Image Settings, the parameter values are back at default settings.
.

I've verified that menu 4 > Memory > "Custom Image" is check-marked which retains custom image settings when the camera is turned off.

I've reset the camera to factory settings but still can't save custom image settings.

I don't have this problem with my K-5 and K2000 cameras.

Since, it's the weekend, I can't talk to a real person at Pentax tech support until Monday.

For serious landscape/nature photography my bag contains K-5, the 12-24, 16-50, and then either the 50-135 or 55-300.

For people/portrait photography I carry my K-5, 16-50, 50-135, and Canon 50D with Canon 17-85

K5 Anyone had over exposure problem

Every once in a while my pictures are really overexposed even though the light meter said my exposure settings were correct. If in P mode I have to set exposure compensation to a large negative number. If in manual mode I have to "underexpose" severely by using a really fast shutter speed or stop down dramatically. Then the light meter shows a large negative number and says I'm underexposing but the picture comes out perfect. Often turning the camera off and on again clears up this misbehavior.

Yes, I had these exact same symptoms with my K10D. The first couple times it happened, it returned to normal like you experienced. Eventually it was permanently clicking wildly. It was a bad circuit board or something like that. C.R.I.S. had to replace the board. Good as new after that though.

I have owned or currently own the istDS, K10D, K20D, K-7, K-5, K-r, K2000

My istDS shutter assembly failed at about 50K . I sent into the repair center and then it was good as new. Quite disappointed that it lasted only 50K actuations though. But I think the newer Pentax DSLRs are designed for a longer life though. My K2000 currently has about 110,000 shutter actuations and still going strong and it's just an entry-level model so I'll bet the K-r and other recent models have a similar or better longevity.

I sold my K10D, K20D, and K-7 bodies long before they even hit 50K so I didn't give them a chance to show their longevity potential.

K-r uses too slow shutter times with external flash
Posted By sevenarrow

I was expecting someone with your response. Getting the same or different results between K-5 and K-r when using manual, TV, flash X-sync speed is not the issue here. The original poster and I are complaining about the shutter speed the K-r chooses when in P mode and how it is different from every other Pentax DSLR model when in P mode.

I am very proficient in using my DSLRs in manual mode and I know how to adjust the combinations of aperture, shutter speed, ISO and external flash settings to get the results I want. Same is true with TV, AV modes etc.

I do a lot of interior real estate photography and switch to manual mode quite frequently for tricky lighting situations, i.e. bright windows with dark interior. Having said that, there are situations where P mode works real well.

If I'm in a situation where P mode isn't intelligent enough to get the photo correct then I have no problems switching to manual mode. If the P mode technology exists and does a good job of balancing ambient light with flash and is more efficient or quicker than fiddling with the camera to manually figure out what flash, aperture, and shutter speed combination works best then a real pro is not going to let snobbery prevent him from using P mode.

The majority of the interior photos displayed in this gallery were taken in P mode.
