Shake Reduction while Panning

What are your thoughts on using shake reduction while panning? I'm going to the vintage auto races in San Diego to dust off my gear and practice some action shooting. I've heard people say that it should be turned off and the manual mentions turning it off while shooting moving subjects with a slower shutter speed. However, the manual says to then use a tripod and I won't be able to use a tripod at the event, and the shutter speeds won't be reduced below 1/250 and the max focal length that I'll be using is 200 from the DA50-200 lens.

Anyhow, I think having SR on will actually benefit me, but am wondering why some recommend to turn it off while panning?

Just wanted to drop in and say hi. I've owned my K10D for a couple of years, but haven't really focused on photography in a long time. I've decided it's time to dust off the lenses and get out there shooting. One of my co-workers picked up a Canon 50D and dove in head first, so proving that Pentax can keep up with his Canon is the catalyst that has got me going again. :D

I went out today looking for some faster glass, but sadly discovered that the only store in San Diego supporting Pentax at all is George's Camera Exchange in North Park. Very nice people there and I'll gladly use them for my needs, but I live in North County and it's a heck of a drive. Oh well, I guess at least there's one shop near by.

Anyhow, anyone I'll be out and about most weekends in San Deigo and would love to go shooting with some other local Pentaxians.

Craig
