K-5 & Tethered Shooting

To do proper tethered shooting you need complete control of the camera... File transfer alone does not cut it.

The K10D/K20D pentax remote assistant was usable and had some nice features but there was lots of room for improvement. Hell if they give us a good open API i'm sure that there is enough talent out there to put together a good tethered solution. I would be willing to volunteer developer time to do it.

K-5 & Tethered Shooting

Hi

Does anyone know wheteher the K-5 has tethered shooting.

We have that on the K10 & K20 and it is a feature I really really use. I'm really bummed it was dropped on the K7 ....

Here are some of the uses for tethered shooting, i'm sure others have their own list.

1) When teaching photography it is great to be able to show students the controls and the results immediately.
2) I do archictectural photography ... and sometimes I need to put the camera in awkward to reach places e.g. on scaffolding... Tethered shooting plus a remote controlled pan/tilt head is a perfect solution.
3) Nature photography when being near the camera may disturb the subject, being able to trigger the camera and make adjustments remotely plus view the results is just great.
4) Commercial work when my client needs to see the output in near real time.

Please Please Please pentax re-instate tethered shooting. How hard can it be ???

And while yo're at it bring it back on the K7 also. I intend to buy the K5 but I have to keep a K10 handy to be able to do tethered shooting. If possible I want to be able to use the K5 as my main camera and the k7 as backup.

If you do implement tethered shooting then also add this feature...:
The ability to adjust focus remotely... I.e. a software controlled manual focus. You leave the lens and camera in af mode but focus control is then done via software. Focus can be checked by taking a picture:

Also remote live view would be nice. (not abolutlely essential but very nice to have if possible).

Please do not mention Eye-fi ... it is not a solution coz you don't get control over the camera.

5 New Lenses of Pentax? Full Frame Back??

If this is true then this clearly signals that Hoya seem to be investing heavily in Pentax and want the raise the brand image to a level where it can compete with C/N.

In so far as the 50 f1.0 it would be fantastic just to have it in the line up. It would earn Pentax a lot of kudos.

The other lenses are all plausible and make a lot of sense. After all they already have the basic design for both the 20 2.8 and the 135 f2.8 updating the design for digital sensors should not be out of their reach. The 400 f/4 is also quite plausible and has been hinted at in the roadmap in the past.

This also implies that Pentax could be prepping for launching FF body. I hope this is true because it means that Pentax / Hoya are truly determined to clawing their way back to be one of the market leaders.

My K10D is model 1.1 how does one go about getting the upgrade. I'm not expecting it to be free but if it really improves the AF then I would seriously consider it.

k100d super or k10d for home interiors?

When you say interior shots can you be a bit more specific as to what sort of interior shots ?

a) Handheld shots inside such as the sort of stuff you shoot in a party ?
b) Quick snaps for a property web site ?
c) Carefully set-up shots for high end property magazines etc.. ?

The requirements are quite different.

Have a look at this web site: interiors

The photographer is a friend of mine. To achieve those results he puts in a lot of time carefully setting up the lighting. Most of his shots are at ISO100 and on a tripod.

New K20D Intervalometer for HDR images !!

The intervalometer was one of the items on my wish list... And they built it.

I had bought the pricey TS110 cable release for my MZ-S and to get the intervalometer function on the K10D I had ended up modifying it by cutting the cable and making an adaptor to be able to use the TS110 with the K10D.

K10D complaints/K20D fixes

I have 2 K10Ds and never found the file naming to be an issue even when the 2 cameras produced the same file names during the same shoot.

The TC factor option would be a very nice addition its an easy software fix. This would also improve the SR system performance because currently the SR assumes the fl of the lens without the TC

Re the lens profiles that would be very nice to have but I'm not sure whether it is possible to implement without the aperture coupler.

I believe that SDM was pentax's first step towards faster AF and that we will see AF improvements in the future and hopefully more FPS as well.

I beleive that the K20D will be a success mainly on the back of its IQ and value for money this should attract a new constituency of users who will be the market for a K1D.

If they really want to chomp into C & N market share they also must complete the lens lineup.

The one thing that Pentax really knows how to do is how to build fantastic lenses. They have the designs and probably still have the tooling for all the old greats so bringing them up to date for digital should not be outside their capabilities. I personally would love to see the FA* 80-200 f/2.8, FA* 250-600 F/5.6, FA* 85 f/1.4, FA* 200 f/4 macro, the venerable A* 400 f/2.8 but with SDM AF.

EDIT: Oh yes one more thing... TCs that support SDM.. The new 200 f/2.8 + a set of 1.4x and 2x SDM TCs would make a lovely setup.

My Day with the K..D

That is not what I meant.. Assuming that there is a high frame rate eg 7-9 fps which admittedly is not easy to implement.

The easy software feature would be the ability to slow down the frame rate. That would enable the shooter to "tune" the frame rate to the sort of action being photographed. It could even be added in a post release firmware update. This would be even more useful on the new camera due to increased file sizes.

I'm with you on that 5fps would be about just right for me, 3 is adequate for most situation, The ideal solution would be to have something in the reigon of 7-9fps with the ability to slow it down to say 5 / 3 fps. I would be a relatively simple feature to implement in software.

Fair enough you certainly cannot be specific but knowing my wish list will I be a happy camper ? :-)

Naturally It is unreasonable to expect all features to be met but I suppose it is quite obvious what the important ones are.

Hi Ben,

Some time ago you posted a question:

When there is a K?D what will it be like?

I posted a wish list here: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/150420-post109.html

How much of this list does your new toy tick off!

My wish list:

1. Faster and more accurate AF I know it is a contradiction in terms but we know it is possible err. nikon/canon do it already.

2. User Adjustable AF settings ( a user should be able to correct back/front focusing). User is able to save the settings on a lens by lens basis.

3. Larger sensor (1.3 crop factor) but only if current DA lenses cover the 1.3 crop factor. The reason for this is the physics... larger pixels => lower noise.

4. faster frame rate.... 5 to 8 fps and the frame rate should be adjustable. ie low,,, 3, med 5, high 8. 8 May be overkill (at least for me) but it would be nice to have at least 5fps.

5. Quieter operation over all --- Quiter af motors quieter shutter / mirror mechanism.

6. Higher eyepoint on the viewfider... but don;t mess up the viewfinder the k10 finder is too nice to muck up.

7. Smarter AF modes... e.g nearest subject, track moving subject etc... Nikon have someting of the sort and it really works well.

8. A larger / sharper screen 3" that is usable when checking sharpness. A good anti reflective system for the screen that will allow better viewing under bright sunlight. Also the screen must be highly scratch resistant.

9. Lower noise and higher iso... up to at least 3200.. I want iso3200 with the sort of noise we currently get at around 400 on a K10D .

10 DNG with compression out of the camera. In camera processing should be fast enough not to have a detrimental effect on frame rate and buffer depth.

11. Dual Card Slots (SD) with the ability to write Raw on one and jpeg on the other.

12. Buttons for WB & ISO.... ie hold a button down and turn a control wheel.

13. WB Setting display in viewfinder.

14. Flash exposure compensation display in viewfinder independent of meter display... EOS 3 has this

15. Bigger buffer and Better Write speeds to cards.

16. Separate AF Assist Lamp. (ie no need to popup flash)

17. Intervalometer accessible throught the menu. (IE TS110 cable release functions built into the firmware). This should be easy.

18. Bundled IR Remote with a gizmo to keep it permanently attached in some way e.g. to the camera strap or the base of the camera.

19. Higher res eg 16mp but not at the expense of adding noise.

20. Addon for wireless transfer to PC

21. Tetherd shooting.

22. In body 2x viewfinder magnifier that can be switched in. nice

23. Live histograms. and possibly live view.

24. Live view through a USB/wireless connection. Imagine being able to view the viewfinder display from a PDA. ALso nice would be remote control manual focusing.

25. Ability to download the camera configuration to an xml file and upload the settings to another body.

26. High flash sync speed at least 1/500.

27. Bomb proof PC-Sync socket that can will put user's mind at rest when connecting flash systems... or even better make the hot shoe take high sync voltages as well.

28. Bring back 100% compatibility with older M/K Lenses. Ie proper open aperture metering.. Even if this means inputting the maximum aperture of the lens manually, It would be nice if you could save a lens profile ie focal length max aperture etc... and when you mount the lens you simply select the lens from a menu.

29. Updat the lens line up .... Fast primes and fast zooms. (full frame) not APS-c / APS-h.. Coz i beleive that eventually Pentax will have to go full frame.
Bring back the classics like the 80-200 f/2.8 85 f1.4 300 f/2.8 400 f/2.8
and add some more 135 f/2 200 f/2 etc.

30. On the lens front the line up needs to be more coherent.. Look a nikon... 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, 200-400... Just 4 pro lenses will take you from ultra wide to a 400mm tle add 1.4 tc and you in 600mm territory .

31. The pro lenses should be built to take pro use... Metal body + weather proofing

PEF vs. DNG
Posted By pgenovese
Replies: 20

I shoot PEF but convert everything to DNG.

The reason is simple PEF files are smaller and i get almost 200 shots on a 2GB card as opposed to 120.

There may be a small speed advantage as well but it is not significant enough to be noticable unless you are using very slow sd cards.

Once I download my cards I always convert to DNG. I find that converting to DNG gives me the following advantages.

1. The XMP data that is usually saved as a .XMP sidecar file is integrated into the DNG file itself so it is easier to manage coz you don't have to move the .XMP file with the original dng file.

2. Future readability of DNG is likely to be better than that of PEF with popular software.

Hi Phil,

From your comment it appears that you own a Sigma 50-500. Would you do me one small favour. I'm considering getting a 50-500 myself and would like to know what the effective maximum aperture is when the lens is set to 400mm..
