Is that a Q in your pocket, or are you just glad to see us? Do you carry a pocket camera? Sure, smartphone cameras are getting better and better, but you can’t change the lenses and they’re getting better through computational photography, which is basically letting some Silicon Valley nerd drive. So do you slip a Pentax in your pocket when you leave the house? Vote in this week’s poll, and then tell us your thoughts in the comments! And if you haven't had a chance to sign up yet for The Best of Pentax Forums weekly newsletter, please join the almost 1,100 Pentaxians who have subscribed.

What does it say about Pentaxian hopes and dreams that an April Fools post about an imaginary K-3 full-frame digital camera has more views and more comments than the actual announcements of the real K-1 full frame and the real K-3 APS-C flagship? Is it just that we artistic types are dreamers by nature? Maybe the fake specs fit a real need? Or is this just the ultimate expression of Gear Acquisition Syndrome?

You're welcome! It's interesting to me how some lenses just fit your eye, and some don't. And I'm not sure how to explain that, but I know it when I see it. There are photographers who love 50s, and collect them. And for years every camera came with one! I've literally given away a dozen over the years, I have so little use for them.

Though I have held on to one: the SMC Pentax 50mm F1.2. Because 1.2. Never really used it on my LXs or MX, but I do like it on my K-3 III Monochrome, where it's a sweet short fast tele.

Poll: How fast do you update firmware? Best of Pentax Forums Newsletter March 27 Poll

How fast do you update firmware?

Pentax just released perhaps the tiniest firmware update ever. Here’s everything it does: Corrected – When using the camera with combination of ImageSync, certain characters in the wireless LAN password may cause unstable operation in rare cases. And…that’s it!

Now the bad news about software is that all software is buggy. The good news is that bugs can be fixed with patches and firmware updates.

Which are software. And therefore buggy. Hence the horror stories about firmware updates bricking cameras. And why (taking off my Pentax cap and pulling on my IT Guy lid) those of us who run datacenters have a rule:

Let someone else go first.

So what’s your position on firmware updates? Do you update the moment a new release drops? Do you wait for others to go first? Or do you leave well enough alone and only update if your camera has problems the update addresses? Vote in this week’s poll, and then tell us your thoughts in the comments! And if you haven't had a chance to sign up yet for The Best of Pentax Forums weekly newsletter, please join the almost 1,100 Pentaxians who have subscribed.

We all love to talk about our favorite lenses, and debate their merits. What’s your least favorite lens? You know, the one in the bottom of your bag you only remember when you accidentally grab it reaching for glass you like. Mine’s any 50mm, followed closely by every 35mm ever made. I don’t know why; they just don’t fit my eye. I’ve got bags full of wider glass, and short teles, all of which I love. So please dig that dusty lens out of the bag, share shots with us, then tell us in the comments how you really feel about that lens! Tom's Guide Monochrome Review: I may never shoot in color again

Little did I know that my afternoon with the K-3 III Monochrome would help shake me out of a photographic rut and get me stoked to snap frames again. By the end of the day, I took nearly 400 photos with Pentax’s B&W-only digital camera — and I may never shoot in color again. Here's why.
I took nearly 400 photos with Pentax?s B&W-only digital camera ? and I may never shoot in color again | Tom's Guide

I know what he means. Color cameras are gathering dust since I got the Monochrome last summer. Even going to shoot the eclipse with it!

Poll: Are you buying gear for the eclipse? Best of Pentax Forums Newsletter March 20 Poll

Veteran Member Tony Belding is thinking about buying a Theta for the eclipse. Instead of photographing the sun and moon, I'm thinking more in terms of video capture for the viewing party, getting the environment and the reactions of the people. I had the idea of putting a 360° camera up on a tall (2m) tripod stand. But what camera? I don't know much about 360° cameras. Of course I've heard the name Theta from time to time, but I know there are different models.

What are your plans, Pentaxians? Are you buying gear for the eclipse? Are you buying gear and blaming it on the eclipse? Have you already bought gear for the eclipse? "Quality—you know what it is, yet you don't know what it is. But that's self-contradictory. But some things are better than others, that is, they have more quality. But when you try to say what the quality is, apart from the things that have it, it all goes poof! There's nothing to talk about. But if you can't say what Quality is, how do you know what it is, or how do you know that it even exists? If no one knows what it is, then for all practical purposes it doesn't exist at all. But for all practical purposes it really does exist".

After reading through the advice here I've ordered the SMC Pentax-D FA Macro 50mm F2.8. I settled on the 50 partly because everyone raved about its sharpness, and partly because I don't have an AF prime in that range. Thanks to all ya'll for the help!

We're always here to help you spend your money! Have you had a chance to try the HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE? It's AMAZING on the Monochrome, lightning quick autofocusing and razor sharp, and I'm guessing it would be just as good -- though slow -- on the K-3 III Colour. And yet very small and light for something that long. I love mine!

Yup. We have a lot of folks in the southern hemisphere, so I said change in seasons. Though I spent a lot of time in the tropics; technically no seasons such as summer or winter in that region, but there is a transition between the rainy and dry seasons, then back again. Change is the only constant!

Technology is always a study in compromise. Take computers: a workstation with a giant monitor is an excellent way to edit graphics. It will not, however, fit in your pocket like your smartphone. So you choose which is best suited to your needs. Lenses are the same way. Giant no-compromise lenses tend to be expensive and…well, giant. Smaller lenses are generally less expensive and are definitely easier to carry, but getting there requires compromise. Consider two Pentax lenses: the legendary SMC Pentax-FA 77mm F1.8 Limited, winner of our 2014 Best Pentax Lens of All Time Tournament, and the more recent HD Pentax-D FA* 85mm F1.4 SDM AW. These are both fast short telephoto “portrait” lenses. The 85 is a classic length 1255 gram bemouth with an average price of $1,800; the 77 is a quirky length, like most Limiteds, that weighs just 270 grams with an average price of $825. Which camp is yours, Pentaxians? Do you chase image quality and just buy one of those giant camera luggage bags with wheels? Or do you prefer the small and light, and live with the compromises?

So what say you, Pentaxians? Is it big, no compromise glass for you, or small and light? Vote in this week’s poll, and then tell us your thoughts in the comments! And if you haven't had a chance to sign up yet for The Best of Pentax Forums weekly newsletter, please join the almost 1,100 Pentaxians who have subscribed.
