So glad I pulled the trigger on mine a couple of weeks ago. No more K-3 at B&H. Searched Adorama too, no joy.

Olympus 35RC 35mm rangefinder camera, bought with saved-up allowance money in 9th grade. Stolen rather promptly by one of the denizens of my inner city junior high. I still have some of the photos I developed in my B&W darkroom!

I just bought another one on the Fleabay so both daughters can get some experience with SLR photography. Or so I tell myself! :p

Disclaimer: I am 100% amateur and far from a photo expert, yet I have developed a decent eye for composition and reasonable technical skills. My actual photographs have not caught up to that ideal though! :D
IQ is part science and part art, as you know. Opinions on IQ can be highly subjective. My thoughts on Canikon are not up to date and are specific to my personal experience. In my case, I rarely fell in love with any of the images I captured on a Canon 350D back in the day. Immediately after switching to a Pentax K200D, I started to really appreciate the "look" of the photos. The subtle differences in colors, the 3D quality, that ineffable something that makes a photo "pop" without being garish or artificial. It's especially pronounced with Pentax prime lenses IME/IMHO. Take a look at various members' photos in the Galleries. You'll hopefully see what I mean.
Agreed, Canikon is an industry standard and Pentax-toting pros are not commonly seen. The analogy that's often cited is the story of Betamax versus VHS; the superior technology lost out to the superior marketing strategy. The K-5 added whole new levels of professional-level features and the K-3 series, more still. Now that Pentax has a FF camera in the K-1, there is more impetus than before for demanding pros to move in the Pentax direction.
You have certainly come to a place where we all dig Pentax, so there will be an inherent bias. In my case, due to a very busy life, I did very little shooting for a few years until a recent family vacation. I was even thinking of moving to Canikon to reinvigorate my interest in photography. Then I took the Pentaxes to Ireland and fell in love again. (The weather sealing certainly did not hurt.)
YMMV of course!

Welcome, roti! So far the discussion has been mostly about features and ergonomics. Let's talk image quality. My first Pentax was a refurb K200D which is still going strong. I fell in love with the vibrant yet lifelike colors from the Sony 10mp sensor via Pentax glass, just magical compared with my former Canon. Eneloop AA batteries will run that little guy forever. My main Pentax is a K-5, which as mentioned was the flagship a few years back. Put first-rate zoom or prime lenses on that and you'll get stunning 16mp pics. And the shake reduction is in the body! So old primes work great. Pentax IQ is second to none IMHO.
Autofocus is underwhelming on both, though there are tricks to compensate. I may upgrade soon for sports photography. The magnesium body frame may be heftier than ABS plastic but to me it is worth it. A few zoom lenses have known issues with the AF motors, but the malfunctions are still rare. The street cred (brand name) factor matters to some but not to me. That's about it for downsides.
If you want a light rig for street photos, any Pentax APS-C with a hand strap and a 40mm Limited pancake lens will feel like an extension of your hand. From your comments, it sounds like the K-1 would have too much bulk and weight. Not to mention price, at least at the moment.
My suggestion would be to try some used gear from the Marketplace on this forum. Don't break the bank until you're sure Pentax is the right system for you. Good luck!

Actually, the K-7 had a 15 MP CMOS sensor. The K200D (and K10D) had the celebrated Sony 10 MP CCD. Many think that the color rendering on the CCD sensor rocks.

All this talk of the sweet little K200D is making me nostalgic. Recently I shot a family vacation in Ireland with my K-5 and lent the "old" K200D to my teenaged daughter. Her photos are prettier.

Your wish is my command!
My Pentax-related accomplishment for the day is that both the K-5 and K200D are now sporting updated firmware and are not bricked. Note to self: Next time do it *before* taking 2000 pics! :p

Hello Pentaxians,
Long time no see. I joined in 2009 and learned a lot from you over the ensuing few years. More recently I've concentrated more on work, family and music than photography. Well, I'm back!
Our clan just returned from a great family vacation in photogenic Ireland. My elder daughter and I captured close to 2,000 photos between us, she with my trusty K200D and DA 18-250 zoom, me with my rock-solid K-5 and DA 18-135 zoom, plus a few landscape shots with the DA 40/2.8 Limited. Weather resistant gear is an absolute must there. As time permits, I'll be sorting through and finding the keepers.
Also, now that the kids are seriously into competitive indoor volleyball, I've started to look at lens and SLR options to capture the action more successfully. So I'll be perusing the site to get insights from fellow members. I'll start by putting a used DA* 50-135/2.8 zoom on the K-5, though I think a K-3 may enter the picture when the price is right. (Yes, I know about the dreaded motor issue with the zoom.)
So hello again! Now pardon me while I update my firmware. :)

I have completely stopped purchasing Pentax gear since the price increase. Moreover, I have strongly considered selling it all and reverting to Canon. I have a K200D and a K-5, as well as nine Pentax lenses. Number 10 is not going to happen as things stand now.
These UPP prices are ridiculous!! Wake up Pentax!

Horrendous. I nixed my planned purchase of a DA 40 mm Limited when it increased in price by 50% overnight! Boycott Pentax.

I sure hope this pricing is an April Fool joke. I was thinking of the DA Limited 40 mm f 2.8 pancake. At B&H sitting in the cart, it went from $340 to $500 while I slept on it! :-( Guess that decides it.

My new K-5 was outfitted with a newly K-5-formatted SDHC card and I had shot a few dozen images which looked great. Then it sat for a month or so while I mainly worked. (A travesty, I know.)
I shot a bunch of images at my wife's 50th birthday. They looked fine on the monitor. When I went to download them the next day, none had been saved. I had never heard of this problem until seeing this thread.
Is there any hope of salvaging the images???
