Congratulations to the winner. Totally agree with the selection and the honourable mentions. The entries were amazing and quite inspirational. I love posts like these because it makes me want to go take more pictures. Thank you to the host for commenting on all the entries and providing some great feedback. Yes the city was a bit foggy in the shot.

Went for a walk with a friend by Toronto lakeshore. Some long exposures were a good way to spend the time by the lake.

This photo is well composed with beautiful colours... but I nominate this photo for the emotions it evokes, not the technical stuff. This reminds me of a carefree childhood. The picture itself I can imagine on a children's storybook. Nominated.

Long Exposure

Hmmm rumour has it? .. Well electronically speaking the longer you keep your sensor active the more heat you will generate and that will eventually reduce the lifespan of your camera. So going by that logic I'd say take less pictures as well. The camera's lifespan starts to reduce after certain amounts of shots. Less shutter actuations means camera won't die as quickly. Actually long exposure stress isn't as bad as the mechanical stress. One long exposure shot (1 shutter actuation) is probably easier on your camera than 10 shutter actuations (short, fast, burst).

I was told to add the background story to the photo so here it is. Photo was taken in montreal with a camera that was an accidental purchase. I was setting up my tripod to do a shot of the alley with long exposure. Once the shutter was open two of my friends walked into the shot and around that time the battery died. I had no idea how the shot came out until I took it into the computer (again, a bit of throwback to film era). When I mentioned to my friend that I'm entering the photo in a contest we were discussing how the photo actually represents their relationship quite well. She is the active one, always on the move, while he is steady. Two of my closest friend in an accidental shot taken with one of my first camera that helped me learn and love photography - couldn't think of a better picture to enter.

Initially I was worried about the low light/noise performance limitation of the ist-Dl. But I actually ended up liking the effect of the noise on this picture. While I've taken more technically sound pictures since this still has a special place in my heart so here is my submission.

The 18-135 makes it way too versatile. Oh come on have some fun, add a bit of challenge to it and get rid of the zoom, add a prime. Or shoot only at 135 end :D

Sounds like a very interesting challenge. I'll join this month. Will be working with a half broken K-5 and trying to decide between using the Sigma 70 macro of the FA 50 1.4 . Decisions decisions...

Any news on the K-3 and AF-C with face detection for video?

It may have something to do with the the chips processing power. While shooting the movie the processor has to work a lot more than simply showing it on liveview mode. I'm just guessing but it could be that it doesn't have power to do face tracking and record video at the same time.

I don't understand this obsession with hating Ricoh. Why do we have a Ricoh vs Pentax attitude? As far I can tell Pentax is Ricoh! The K3 is a Ricoh Pentax. The front says Pentax and the back says Ricoh because its a Pentax of the Ricoh era. I have no issues with it. And if Ricoh can successfully revitalize the Pentax cameras I'm sure at the end we are going have fond memories of Ricoh Pentaxes. I'm okay with "Ricoh" on Pentax as long as Pentax improves.

Flash Compensation, Overall Compensation and Ambient Lights

Yeah I've been taking a lot of test shots all day today trying to figure out the effects of the different settings. Right now I can't seem to get the p-ttl to expose properly without flash compensation of -1 or more (bounce off the ceiling or wall). The Auto mode of the flash is exposing perfectly but the p-ttl is constantly overexposing without flash compensation dialed in so just trying to figure out the differences between the compensation settings. Its a bit confusing since I thought p-ttl was suppose to be more accurate than the Auto mode. Manual mode settings are working great.

Flash Compensation, Overall Compensation and Ambient Lights

I recently got into flash photography so I've been digging around a lot for information and learn as much as I can. I understand the 2 light source of ambient light and flash light and how both contribute to your single photo. I've also tried to read through the manuals of both the flash gun ad the K5 camera. Its a bit challenging since you have to read two manuals and combine the procedures into one. I have a question which may have been answered already but I haven't been able to find it on the forums or through googling. So please be patient and help point me toward the answer if I've missed it. This may sound like a total newbie question and my understanding here could be a bit flawed.

I'm trying to understand the difference between Overall Compensation and Flash Compensation as it relates to K5 camera. The K-5 body has has the overall compensation +/- Button and also a Flash compensation in the menu. The external flash has a flash compensation setting as well. From what I've read so far The Flash compensation from the camera (the one in th menu? not the +/- button?) and the flash unit does the same thing and its additive. Now how does the overall +/- overall compensation button on the camera body effect the flash compensation? Does it control the exposure for the ambient light or the overall exposure? I guess I'm trying to find out the relationship between the +/- compensation button, the flash compensation found in onscreen menu and the flash compensation found on the flash.

I found this site which mentions how they behave in Nikon and Canon but can anyone explain their relation in the K-5 or pentax? http://neilvn.com/tangents/flash-photography-techniques/8-flash-exposure-comp/

Sorry about the convulated and confusing question.

Getting my feet wet

I'm in the same situation as you. I have tried to learn and enjoyed photography mostly shooting with available and ambient light. Recently my sister just had one of her many wedding events and even though my ambient shots came out acceptable I felt a flash would have helped a lot. So I decided to get my feet wet as well and get the flash in time to learn it before the next event. I just ordered by flash unit which I'm hoping will arrive tomorrow. In the meantime I've been reading up on basics of lighting principles and flash photography. This site helped me quite a bit today. Even though he focuses a lot on off camera setup the lighting principles still apply. I hope this will be helpful to you. Strobist: Lighting 101 .

From one beginner of flash photography to another beginner, let me/us know what you learn. Perhaps I will pickup some tips from you as well. Good luck.

Hello, I've been searching the manual and forum for this. If I've missed it in the manual or the forum please accept my apologies in advance. I'm using a Pentax M 1.7 lens on the K-5 now. Everything is working fine but when I switch to live view mode I can't seem to locate the light meter. I can see the light meter through the viewfinder when I turn the shutter dial to the right but I don't notice a light meter on the LCD during live view. Does this exist?

Pentax Unilateral Pricing Policy

I also agree that I think it was the only response that they could have given with the current circumstances. I don't even expect them to hold a discussion 6 months from now. Their business model isn't a democracy. You can't discuss pricing policies and make everyone happy. While I don't like the price increase and I understand the anger, I don't expect them to hold customer consultations for pricing. If the business is a publicly traded company then their responsibility is to the shareholders and making profit for them. The way we give our input is by voting with our wallets. If we don't like their pricing we don't buy and that will force them to listen. Market forces people.

I was on a upgrade path after using the ist-DL for more than 5 years. Few weeks ago I bought a used K7 and sold it quickly at the same price to recover the money. The ist-Dl shutter actually died on me the same day I sold the K7. Few hundred dollars more and now I'm picking up a k-5 soon. Wallet hit - $900 (used). No better half to explain this to, although not sure about that student loan now...

And for anyone that is interested few of the stores here in Canada are still selling the k-5 for below $1099 that seems to be the norm now. http://www.photoprice.ca/product/03308/Pentax-K-5-price.html
