Guess I missed the memo, because I’ve got four of them & use ‘em regularly in all-purpose grab & go situations. One person’s trash is another’s treasure!

The 28-300mm Tamron was available for many years in a K-mount, so used copies are out there. Early versions were much larger & heavier than later XR versions. There also was a Promaster Spectrum-7 28-300mm, which was the exact same lens as the small XR Tamron.

I have a question about Kenko teleconverters

The PZ version of the Kenko 1.5x SHQ does indeed have the two additional contacts that are required, so I'm guessing it should work - but I haven't verified this in actual use. I have owned and used that particular teleconverter, and can say that I was satisfied with it's sharpness and screwdrive autofocusing capabilities.

I had owned just about every Pentax body from the Super Program to the PZ1P. The PZ1P was indeed incredibly capable & comfortable in hand. I carried two of them on trips, and it took my enjoyment of photography to another level.

Today, the camera that fills that roll for me is the OP's choice, the K-5IIs. Although it's technology has been surpassed, it's rock-solid reliability and ergonomics keep me from wandering towards anything else. Guess it's my digital PZ1P!

K-x eating batteries fast

I have brought both a K-x and a K-200d back from the dead with symptoms similar to yours. The problem is indeed lack of use. The fix is to jolt the internally failed battery back to life. I can't guarantee success because situations can vary, but you now have a useless camera, and the only thing it will cost you to try this is the purchase of a set of Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries.

- Install a new set of Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries - No substitutes!
- Turn the camera on (don't operate anything) for 30 seconds.
- Shut the camera off, and wait 15 seconds.
- Turn the camera back on for 30 seconds.
- Shut the camera off, and wait 15 seconds.
- Repeat this approximately 50 times. The goal here is to provide jolts of power that will renew the failed internal battery.
- Now try to reset the date and time.
- At this point, normal functions will hopefully have resumed for at least a limited period of time, so take some photos and see if the battery-level indicator continues to indicate a full charge. If the battery-level indicator quickly drops to a partial reading, or the camera shuts off, or the time/date display reverts back to the it's initial setting >>> repeat the above on/off sequence another 50 times.
- Repeat a third or fourth time or more if necessary. Again, you have nothing to lose by repeating the effort to awaken the internal battery that has failed. Edit - As I think back on it (it was a few years ago!), I must have done the on/off sequence at least 150-200 times overall, as the camera seemed to be stepping up it’s ability to indicate a full charge & function normally. I would stop after 50 on/off sequences & check functions, then do another 50, and so on.

If the camera does indeed return to normal function, continue to keep Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries in it at all times. Take the camera out once a week or so, and run it through some of it's operations by taking photos, deleting them, etc. Check your time/date setting which should be retaining the proper date. Never leave the camera sitting unused for an extended period of time, and never let the AA batteries die. Once your battery-level indicator starts consistently reading anything other than full, put in a new set of Energizer Lithiums. Sure, they cost more, but these cameras absolutely love them, and you do get a lot of shots out of one set.

It's now been approximately two years since I used this method on my K-x and K-200d, which failed at different times, but one shortly after the other. Some general information I had read on the forum and some head scratching led me to ponder this potential fix & try it. Two years on, both of these cameras are working flawlessly and have never repeated any of the symptoms that, at the time, made them appear to be dead as a doornail. Again, inactivity is the mortal enemy of the K-x & K-200d, so if your camera regains full functions, give it regular workouts. Oh, and if the camera doesn't return to normal, for a relatively small outlay, buy a clean used K-5IIs & never look back!

Bulging D-L109 Battery - Replace with real Pentax or is Brand X OK?

Yes, the K-r does take the same AA holder. I use Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries in mine, as they deliver very stable performance & are long lasting. Edit - Also, the “mirror flop” problem that K-r bodies have been susceptible to, does not seem to manifest itself if consistently running AA batteries.

Kx colours

I have a K-r that’s dark brown with gold metal flake - to my eye, one of the most visually attractive cameras I’ve ever come across. I purchased it from a seller on Amazon a few years ago, brand new in the box with lens, for $150 (I run it on Energizer AA Lithiums to avoid mirror flop issues). Nowadays I mostly keep it for fun as a collector’s piece, as it is 100% mint. Interestingly, I’ve seen a K-x in the same color on eBay, listed by a Japanese seller - but this K-r seems more balanced to my eye, with black rubberized grip material on both sides of the body.

The silver K-x mentioned above & for sale in the US is listed by a seller I have dealt with (bought a K-x from him!), and he is reputable. The link above shows the camera as sold, but it has been relisted as of this writing.

K200D only takes Lithium Batteries

I would guess he’s recalling discussions that have taken place regarding the time/date battery. I’ve mentioned the technique I use (in a few different threads) to bring this battery back to life - most recently in a thread titled “My new crippled K-200d” from, I believe, 2-19-22. Sorry I don’t know how to provide a link.

Fwiw, I use nothing but Energizer Lithiums, and my two K200s continue to work flawlessly.

I have the K-5IIs, and haven’t read anything about problems when coupled to a genuine Pentax D-bg4 grip (mine works properly). However, I’ve read about an assortment of issues with the aftermarket clones. I would suspect it has something to do with the grip itsef.

Hope this proves helpful to others. I can’t stress enough that inactivity seems to be the camera’s most debilitating enemy. With my K-200d & K-x, they had both been sitting idle for a long period of time. These guys just want to be used!

My "new" crippled K200D

Yes indeed. I’ve shared it here a couple of times, and just recently in a thread about the K-x. First let me say that there’s no guarantee here, but this technique has brought both my K-200d and K-x back to full & dependable life, after both had reached a debilitating quick-shut-down state, shortly after powering on with fresh batteries.

So the basic theory here is that the date/time battery has effectively lost it’s juice, which then disables further camera functions. To restore normal operation, the date/time battery must essentially be rejuvenated.

Using a brand new set of Energizer Lithium batteries, power the camera on for 30 seconds, turn it off, wait about ten seconds, and then power it back on for another 30 seconds - and continue to do this 50 times (or more if needed). In the beginning, the camera might shut itself off before a full thirty seconds has expired - if so, just turn the switch off, wait ten seconds, and power it back up again. Eventually, it should remain powered up for longer amounts of time until it no longer shuts down prematurely. The idea is that every time the camera is turned on, it’s proving a jolt of power to the date/time battery, which eventually resurrects it.

When normal function returns, it’s key to continue using fresh Energizer Lithiums, swap them out as soon as they start to fade, and don’t let the camera sit too long without powering it up & taking a few shots. I thus far have used no other battery (including Eneloops) that provides the camera with similarly stable performance.

Love the K-200d, and just had mine out today. Actually, I have two of them - one purchased new, and one purchased years ago in like-new condition from B&H. They still work flawlessly, although I had to bring the date battery back to life on one of them (via a little technique of mine), when it started shutting the camera off shortly after powering-on. My best advice for any Pentax that runs AA batteries is to only use Energizer Lithiums, and never let the camera sit idle for an extended period of time without running it through it's paces. Of course, standard lithium batteries (not rechargables) will also eliminate the possibility of battery leakage.

Although the K-5IIs is my new favorite, the K-200d is a great camera & will continue to see active duty!

Yes, the K-x is a neat little camera. I have a compact 28-300mm Tamron XR lens on mine, and together they make a nice lightweight & versatile combo. I keep it ready at all times for quick grab & go-anywhere situations. Congrats & have fun!

I recently upgraded to the K-5IIs and love it. In particular, I wanted high ISO performance, but did not want a large file size. The K-5IIs fits right into that slot, and has great ergonomics - along with being almost bulletproof! Enjoy your new camera, whichever one you eventually choose.

I still greatly enjoy using my K-200d, ergonomically one of the best Pentax cameras ever. But oh my goodness, I recently discovered what is, imho, the best bargain Pentax buy in the universe: the K-5IIs. Probably would have been my final camera purchase, except for the fact that I just picked up a second one! If the opportunity arises, buy this camera & you’ll be thanking me later.

K-Mart, Sears, & JC Penny used Japanese suppliers in the '80s, and at some point switched to Korean manufacturers, of which Samyang was one. As I recall when handling them, the first Korean lenses seemed rough & crude compared to their earlier Japanese counterparts.

K-200d reading battery dead after a few shots.

Photogem provided links that show the battery being replaced. One would think that this would be the ideal solution.

As for my K-200d experiment, I’ve been checking the camera every other day & running some test shots, both with & without flash. It continues to show a full-charge reading without dropping off (with Energizer Lithiums). This seems to indicate that the battery was brought back to life via the repetitive interval charging, but perhaps some of these batteries are too far gone to be revived.

Again, I say all of this without honesty knowing whether or not these batteries are theoretically even revivable, and I don’t want to steer anyone down an invalid path. This simply is what appears to have happened with my K-200d coming back to it’s fully functional status - after being a hair’s breath away from relegating it to the parts drawer!

Update: The last couple of days, I've run the K-200d through a series of test shots, both with & without flash. All functions have operated properly, and the battery icon has consistently shown a full charge.

It therefore appears that the camera's normal functions have been revived by the steps noted above. Hopefully this information will prove helpful to someone else down the road!

K-200d reading battery dead after a few shots.

Follow Up: I elected to pursue assuring that the date/time capacitor was fully charged by repeatedly leaving the camera on through a one minute cycle, shutting it off, and turning it on again. After initially displaying the dead battery icon, it began alternating between showing half, full, & empty charge levels. Eventually, it began skewing in the direction of indicating that it was retaining it’s charge. Then I reset the time & date (as it was prompting me to do). Finally, I raised the flash to allow it to fully charge, and then fired off a few flash shots.

After doing all of the above, the camera now appears to be functioning normally. I was initially using a set of charged Eneloops, and have just installed a set of Energizer lithiums. So far so good, but I will continue to monitor & report back if the camera again becomes problematic. At this point, it does indeed seem that a capacitor issue was involved in the camera misreading the status of the batteries & shutting itself down. Fingers crossed!

The SMC Pentax 35-70mm and SMC 1.7mm lenses were made in Japan.

The budget Takumar zoom may not have been, which would also have kept the cost down - but I don't recall for sure.

The SF-1n was a pleasure to use - super comfortable camera.

Still shooting with my two K200d bodies regularly.

On one, I use the battery grip without the batteries installed, just to get that sweet-spot balance with a long lens + teleconverter attached. In addition to the extra weight of a second set of batteries, I found that having two power sources occasionally caused the camera to not release the shutter properly.

On the other body, I have a 28-300 Tamron mounted without the grip, for a more compact, grab & go all-purpose setup.

Still a wonderful & relevant camera body.

The Kx & K200d (two of each), share duties as my main cameras.

The Kx, coupled with a Tamron 28-300xr lens, is my grab & go setup. Very small & comfy.

Even though the one you were looking at has sold, it seems to come up fairly often on the used market.
