Take the pledge - No new Pentax lens purchases

The thing is, besides being completely futile and childish, you could be doing something so much more constructive with your time if you gave up the entitled teenager act for a few minutes. You're really upset with the price, warranty period and QC of Pentax? Fine, what can you do? On what front might you make some kind of positive difference?

Prices you obviously can't change. QC we have no idea about under Ricoh, time will have to tell...

So, why not mobilize people to petition for longer warranties in light of this price change? And I don't just mean a thread on here, I mean organize with any like-minded people and target other sites and forums for signatures, too. Send Pentax the message that they need to add value now, that Ricoh is still new to us, and we need some kind of gesture of good faith to justify these changes.

If you put something together that was civil, concise but still very much to the point, I think you'd have much better responses than you've got to these threads of bitching and moaning. I think you could actually get enough signatures on something like that, that Pentax would have to at least acknowledge it, even if they didn't agree.

So, what's the deal? Is that too much effort, or just not who you are? Because what you've shown here by taking everyone's opinions of Pentax so personally is just to make a mess.

Signed,
-An utter bastard

Help me win a wheelchair van.

As some of you may be aware, I was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) in 2008 and have spent my entire photographic "career" dealing with the disease and steadily becoming more and more immobile and less and less able to the thing I love doing, namely getting out and taking photos with all my beloved old Pentax film cameras. As I'm nearly wheelchair bound, getting around is becoming a much bigger problem as traveling with a powerchair requires special wheelchair access vans that are very expensive.
This month is Mobility Awareness Month and my wife was nominated as a Local Hero and entered in a contest where we could win a new wheelchair access van.
You can read about her and vote for her (if you like) here Tiffany Allen | Mobility Awareness Month - Vote For Me!
If you use the promo code "866" it will give her 5 votes instead of one for one time only. Also, if you like, you can vote every 24 hrs.

Thank you all,

Colton

P.S. The photo of me and my wife on the voting page was taken with my Pentax MZ-S and FA 43/1.9 ltd, and Kodak Gold 100 :)

New Pentax Pricing & SDM Debacle

This is another step in Ricoh's plan to expand the reach and market share of the Pentax brand. We cannot on the one hand complain that Pentax USA does nothing, gives horrible service and doesn't support local retailers, and on the other hand complain when Pentax Ricoh Imaging USA advertises for a trade-show and dealer support Rep. and begins to install dealer-support pricing, You can have one or the other. You can't have both.

And you can't have a FF camera without pro local support and service. Add two and Two.

Ricoh has a plan.

I don't have a clue about how to solve your problem, but I don't want your little feelings to be hurt by having a thread with no responses.
I hope I've at least made you feel a little better.

I doubt this means anything other than they've adjusted their language to suit the present situation. People jump at shadows, but it gives some of us more to talk (complain) about, which is easier than getting out and taking pictures :)

Keep reading. Inside family joke, and I added the actual 1990 spec.s from Edmunds in a later reply.

A 1990 Accord EX Sedan (manual transmission, 4-cyl. engine only) weighed 2923 lb.
My wife's 2012 Honda Accord EX-L, which is now classified a "full-size" car, weighs 3593 lb.

And FFS lighten up. Are you Occupying something?

Although I don't care for the K-01, I agree it's great to see development continue under Ricoh. I'm excited that new lenses are in the pipeline along with an updated teleconverter (FINALLY). Although I love my K-5, I would sell it in a heartbeat if Pentax announces a full frame. And gadzooks, if we ever get updated flashes, I would probably have a heart attack.

"The indoctrination that occurs in American universities is one of the keys to the left's holding and maintaining power in America."

This is one of the funniest things I've read in politics. Read it again, but substitute "education" for "indoctrination". That's how his statement reads to me. I've always thought of the Republican party as uneducated rednecks and wealthy white men. Blocking higher education would help shore up the ignorant right vote.

I don't believe I've ever heard of a politician arguing against education, it's absolutely stupifying. Santorum needs his brain washed.

The pursuit of "gear" and neglecting the fundamentals

1) Not an affliction, an ADVENTURE! It's just Lens Buying ADRENALINE! Whatta rush!!
2) Support groups are great for making connections for more of the desired substance.
3) One can never have too many lenses, as long as they're all paid for and storable.
4) We learn judgment from experience. We gain experience by making bad judgments.
5) Gear IS fundamental. Sure, you can shoot pinhole cams - almost no gear necessary.
6) Thus: Those who feel overwhelmed by gear should move to pinhole photography.
7) The rest of us can just keep accumulating whatever we want/need/fetishize/etc.

APS-C vs FF format

As long as your definition of "so simple" is "leave out half the information." :)

If you're talking to a 'newbie' who's casually asked about it at a party, and you're late for a movie or something and/or your 'newbie' isn't really particularly interested, go ahead and stick to the crop FOV difference. If you're discussing it with a 'newbie' who's bothered to log in to an online forum to ask the question - or when you're posting in a thread titled "APS-C vs FF format" :) - you'd better tell the whole story.

Will you be still investing in Pentax mount lenses?

As they used to say when I sold computers... if you buy it to do something you want it to do, it will always do that until it breaks. Pentax makes some every nice lenses. If you have a Pentax camera why wouldn't you have a shopping list of Pentax lenses? If you don't, you need to buy into another camera system. The idea is to enjoy photography, not to fret about the future etc. If Pentax's future seems uncertain to you, you should probably be into something else. Honestly, it's a thought that has never crossed my mind. Do the thing you do full tilt, until the next thing comes along. My one caviat would be, I only have one FA lens at the moment. I'm thinking I'd like the 35 macro, but I'm wondering if I should lay out the extra bucks for an FA 31 Ltd.. just in case Pentax really does make a full frame camera. I know, I'm on record as saying Pentax doesn't need one... but that's no reason not to use the possibility of one as an excuse to lay out the extra $600 to get one of the best lenses ever made on any platform.

Pentax K-5 AF accuracy
Posted By Raffwal
Replies: 181

I think there are three factors at play here:

1) The more the industry gives us, the more we expect. We're almost all pixel-peepers (no offence!) who tend to focus on rather small differencies or problems.

2) Cameras such as K-5 are really consumer electronics of today. While we may feel we're paying a lot for the camera (I certainly do), its price in today's dollars/euros/your-favorite-currency is most likely in relative terms significantly less than a SLR in the olden days. The industry has to cut corners to stay competitive.

3) As each brand has its strengths and weaknesses, AF simply isn't a strength of Pentax. Period.

I am beyond employment. PFC *IS* my day job. I just like to be paid in thumbs-ups. As for other activities (besides reading all sorts interesting crap) I'm currently getting ready to list a bunch of lenses on eBay tomorrow (look for me as R*M) so I'm shooting and editing and describing. Also today I cooked a big batch of caponata and a crockpot full of hamhock-jalapeno chili; did some system reconfiguration including rewriting some scripts; wandered through my forest a bit; and did NOT get up early for the eclipse. Tomorrow, besides the eBay listings, I may work a little more on some lens mods, and cut down some trees (no power saws), and carve a few deities, and re-tune my guitars-banjos-lutes-mandolins-dulcimers. And I'll keep posting here. So many keystrokes, so little time...

EDIT: In case anyone is interested, the lenses and stuff I'll list include: Kodak Signet 35 camera with Ektar 44/3.5 lens; Makinon 28/2.8 (M42); Petri CC 35/2.8 (Petri bayonet); Quantaray 28-80 (Nikon AF); Quantaray 70-300/4-5.6 macro (Sony-Minolta Alpha AF); Minolta Tele-Rokkor PF 100/2.5 (Minolta MD); Sigma-Z 24/2.8 (M42); Takumar Bayonet 28/2.8 (PK-M). And maybe a Nikon EL-Nikkor crystal case.

While I completely respect the opinions of those who shun Facebook and social media, I must tell you that people with "real lives" are indeed finding time to use sites like Facebook and Google plus at pretty much any moment of their day ... work, home, and on the go. Fact is there's 800 million on Facebook alone right now, and that can't be ignored. I'm in television broadcasting, and stations large and small are creating special departments to deal with the reality that people are going to Facebook for everything from breaking news to today's weather report. Folks are using it on mobile, on tablets, even on the couch as they're watching the evening news. It's here, folks ... and those who wish to ignore it are in about the same boat of those who didn't want to give up their beloved horse for an automobile.

As far as posting on other websites with your Facebook account, I can say that many sites prefer that because it removes the "superman anonymity" of having a fake name folks can hide behind. If you're "MrZero33456" you're much more prone to say and do things you'd never do elsewhere because no one knows who you really are. Once you're a real person and your photo appears next to your post, people tend to be much more civil. That means less work for site moderators and generally a better experience for users.

Sorry for being so off topic. Obviously, I think using channels like Facebook and Google+ to evangelize for a Pentax FF is a very good thing to do.

Mag,

What Mike said!

I certainly understand his frustration with the comments in this thread. No one seems to be reading what he wrote in the opening post. If they were we wouldn't have posts suggesting radio triggers or him using flash without permission. HE WAS THE OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER! He was sanctioned by the dance troupe, who knows how he works and expects him to use his flash. He used a central statically mounted flash connected to a radio trigger to allow him to move around without having to recalibrate his lighting every shot. He didn't chimp on a regular basis because his equipment was working properly and he had no reason to think it would stop working after every 2 or 3 shots.

Oh boy, here we go with complete misinterpretations of law by non-lawyers... what's next, claims of "false advertisement"?

It sucks that this touted feature is so frustratingly unreliable, but Pentax's refusal to let us calibrate it ourselves is nothing more than poor quality and customer service. There are no legal issues to be invented here.

I was not going to post to this thread but...

If Hillary was spoiled or not is irrelevant. If she was who is responsible for that, her parents of course. Spoiling a child does not give one a free pass to abuse the child.
Hillary's motivation for releasing the video is irrelevant. It does not change in any way what happened.
How long she waited or why she waited this long to release the video is irrelevant. It does not change in any way what happened.

I fail to see anything in the video that shows a loving parent doing their best to help their child. What I see is ~7.5 minutes of an adult male attempting to verbally and physically beat a young girl into total submission. Everything I know about abuse tells this is one incident in an ongoing behavior pattern that continues to this day.

What to do with this guy, emotionally I'd say let him screen the video with a group of female inmates in an unsupervised setting. Intellectually I realize this accomplishes nothing. If the judge doesn't resign or is not suspended pending the outcome of an investigation the legal system in Texas is anything but justice.
