Hello there,
I haven't used a Metz 48 on my MZ-S but I thnk it's compatible.
I think it has just been replaced by the Mecablitz 50, but the specs are very similar.

The Flash recommendation tool here - Flashgun Recommendations: Metz - recommends the newer 50. However, I'm sure when I used the tool last year when the 48 was current, it showed up in the recommended list for the MZ-S.
Nevertheless, someone may have the definitive answer for you.

Hello Randy,
This might be a possible option - Article: Table Top Tripod as "Chest Pod"
It certainly would allow you to be a lot more mobile.
Camera strap around the neck, mini tripod attached to the camera.
One drawback would be that you would probably have to counter the movement from your breathing and the vibration from your heartbeat. Possibly have it higher on your chest?
I have used one when doing stills for a short film that was going into a film competition. I got a lot more sharper shots using this method than I would have got using only my old shaky hands.

Based on the above I'd say go for the FA 31mm LTD.
There's not many better 'into the 30mm range give or take'.
Just a step or two forwards, a step or two backwards - and you got it covered.
The K-5 will get cheaper soon. The 31mm should at least hold it's value.
At least you have a fun decision to make :).

Ash, surely (especially in December) that the words 'Toowoomba' and 'Cold' just wouldn't seem to be related in any way, shape or form!
Ash, about advice from a previous post. I kept the (nearly new <500 shots) K20D. Using it with the grip felt much better - even for my small hands. Also, I like the skin tone rendering for portraits, people and skin generally!
No K-5 for now then. However, I added an FA Limited (MIJ) 31mm F1.8 (to complete the set of the three amigos) and an A* 300mm F4 instead. The lenses should hold value and the K-5 will be cheaper in 6 months to a year anyway.

Kudos to you.
I just looked at an old optics/physics textbook :(.
Your explanation, although specific had wider implications. Your explanation of the issue was much easier to understand and apply in other areas e.g. astronomy, telescopes etc.
Should write one yourself - with Pentax photographs, of course ;).

I am in the market for an FA 31mm Limited. "Two out of three amigos" just doesn't have the ring that the "three amigos" has to it :).
The lens should be MIJ, be black with box pouches, hood, paperwork etc.
Condition "excellent" minimum.

Thanks for your reply.
I agree. I would rather be discreet and further from the action.
I was even toying with the idea of taking the Tamron SP 180mm F2.5 to be even futher away as it is a large venue.
I really don't want to be in the thick of things. I might observe the Pro's, but I don't want to tag along, or do anything remotely like that.
I'm all for "out of sight, out of mind".
Between the sevice and reception, we are going to the groom's house for "refreshments". So, this will provide an opportunity for fun, intimat shots.

You have been really helpful :).
Especially in making me feel a little calmer. The prospect doesn't seem so daunting now.
The only wide angle I have is the Tamron SP 17mm F3.5, the next widest is the Sigma Super Wide 24mm F2.8. Do you think these lenses will be up to the job?
Although more introverted, I am often more open with strangers, so I should mingle well.
Again, thanks for the informative post. I think I am suffering from information overload from my research, so I'll take your advice - chuill out - and just go with the flow.

I know some people will think it's a bit strange - a beginner using an FA Limited, but although I have been around a while, I have never done (in any way, shape or form) a wedding before.
Hence the post in the Beginner's Forum.
Valuable experience I think.
However, success or failure I think will ultimately come down to (a) the skill to "capture the moment" or (B) my interpretation of the human psyche or (C) Right or wrong place, or right or wrong time.
Anyway, I must get up to Toowoomba one day, to see how it's done in style.

Hello there,
I realise I may be going into the lion's den here!
Advice sorely needed :confused:
My colleague at work is getting married.
Pro stuff e.g. stills and video is taken care of.
They would like me to hover a bit and try to capture anything the pro's might miss e.g. candids etc. How good the Pro's are - I don't know.
I have been to the venue and asked the staff to give me the "reception" lighting, which they most kindly did - large space, very well lit.
These are the only lenses that I have available under F2.0 max.
FA 43mm F1.9
F 50 F1.7
"A" 50 F1.4
FA 77mm F1.8
I've played around at home trying to simulate the lighting I will experience and the lenses coped well :)
However, I want to travel light - My wife and I want to drink a few beers and mingle and enjoy the evening.
My preferred option is:
K20D - Pentax FA 43mm + Fa 77mm.
But I found in the freezer a roll of Kodak Gold ASA 400. I might just use that with my MZ-S and one of the Limiteds as a back up.
Photos will focus mainly on the happy couple, but I'm sure others will want to get in on the action when they are looser. Do I need wider?
Any suggestions about anything would be welcome. I'm stressed even though my friend asked me to do it as a favour.

Thanks for the detailed response Ash.
I think I'll have a clearout of the K20D, all film bodies (except MZ-S's!), surplus lenses (not FA limiteds!), accessories etc. Then I can buy the K-5 and be a minimalist with just a camera and a few Pentax primes.
Photography life might have just got a little bit simpler and lot more enjoyable :)
