Start up and Card Read Problems:Some Solutions

I thought perhaps the card would cut down the air access to the surfaces. But you may be right. The alcohol treatment would be the same. I forgot to mention that an over 90% alcohol solution should be used. Lower concentrations contain contaminants, as someone on the other forum noted.

Start up and Card Read Problems:Some Solutions

I thought I would pass on a couple of tips since I have gained so much from this and the other forum when confronting problems.

After buying a K-X my DS2 languished for several months unused. When I checked it out, I was getting a dead battery and no card indication. Cleaning contacts and new batteries did not help. On this forum I found advice to turn the camera on and off several times in rapid succession. This cleared up the battery problem. I assume there was some oxidation in the switch itself.

I was still getting a no card read. I dipped an SD card in alcohol, shook off some of the liquid and then inserted it twice in the camera. Voila, I was not getting a card read error. I assume there was some oxidation in the slot which I was able to remove. I probably should not have stored the camera with no SD card in it.

I now have my backup camera back and plan to use it on a more regular basis. Hope this helps someone.

Do you have to be shooting jpg's for the HDR to work? Will it work in Raw?

Is the autofocus improved on the k-x over the already improved k2000? All reports are that it is very fast.

Very nice color and contrast. I especially like the 7th shot-the mix of facial expressions is very nice.

We finally had some rain here in Central Texas and these mushrooms popped up overnight. They were gone by evening so the deer must have eaten them. Taken with DS2 and Vivitar 100 macro.

Matthew,

It seems to be green everywhere in Texas just now, a lot of rain as you know. I forget the road, but Buffalo Gap is about 10 miles south of Abilene; the visitor information center there can locate it for you. Thanks for the comment. I did not get a photo of the waterfall.

Three photos from a recent visit to Buffalo Gap, TX, a restored town about 10 miles south of Abilene. The "new" image is of Austin City Hall, taken last week. It has won several architectural awards.

Fossil Rim Wildlife Preserve

We took our two grandchildren to the Fossil Rim Wildlife preserve over the last weekend. The drive through the preserve took us about 3 and 1/2 hours. Each car has one bag of food. The instructions are to drop the pellets on the ground as some of the animals, particularly the ostriches and zebras, can be a bit aggressive. The kids had a great time. The preserve is about 60 miles southwest of Fort Worth in Glen Rose Texas. Some images included, others at my Flickr site in the Texas folder:

Clicking "all sizes" there will give you the larger versions.

Very nice! I thought it was funny that I just posted a Texas cactus pear shot. "Texas Spring." The more common bloom here is more yellow. I suspect you have a great variety of pear cactus in Arizona.

Hello to all,

I have been taking pictures for about 4 decades, starting with an Argus C3, moving through Exacta and Canon models to Pentax film cameras about 15 years ago. For the last year I have been using a DS2, which I love. Don't see the real need as yet for the new 10d.

A few new images are on this site. I have more pictures on Flickr at:

I look forward to partcipating in the forum.
