Item Description
Mint condition AF 280T flash. I bought this new about 6-7 years ago, and I probably only used it a half dozen times. No scratches, no marks, no corrosion on the battery terminals. In perfect working condition. Comes in the original box and soft case. I can't seem to find the manual at the moment; if it turns up I'll include it as well. Otherwise, you can download it from the Pentax website.

Many older Pentax zooms had 'macro' settings; for example both my A35-70/3.5-4.5 and A70-210/4 have one. However as has already pointed out, no 'macro' zoom is a true macro lens. It's simply a lens designed to focus a little bit closer than typical. For true macro perfomance, you want a dedicated macro lens.

I'll add my vote for the Konica Minolta NPH00 battery. I've been using one as my backup battery for the last year, and it works fine. And they are much cheaper than the Pentax battery (I thnik I paid ~$20 for mine). I've avoided the non-name batteries just because the thought of trusting my K10D to the unknown bothers me.

Do you have the camera set to autofocus? That could be your problem. With a manual focus lens and camera set to autofocus, the shutter will only fire if the image is exactly in focus; this is how the focus trap method works. Switch to manual focus on the camera and you shouldn't have any problems getting the shutter to fire.

If I recall correctly, the 1.7 is essentially the same lens optically right from M to A to F to FA series. Same number of elements/groups, same configuration. The only difference is in the electronic bits. For the 1.4, I think the optical design is different between the M series and the newer lenses.
All that aside, any of the 1.4's or 1.7's are great lenses. I've used the M 1.7, A1.7, M1.4 and FA1.7 at different times, and can't say anything bad about them.

My wife is far from being photographically savvy, but has no trouble using my K10D. The 'Green' auto setting works just fine for someone uninterested in tinkering with settings. In fact, she prefers to use the K10D rather than her point and shoot most of the time as she generally gets better photos in the end.

I have the dust removal function on my K10D set to "shake" every time I turn the camera on. After about 6 months of use, I have only had one instance where this didn't clear the visible dust off the sensor. In that case, I had a couple of big sticky blobs on the sensor (no idea what they were or where they came from) that a couple of shots with a blower removed. So, overall, I'm pleased with the dust removal function. As has already been pointed out, the dust removal function is an assist, not a total solution.

I think a polarizer is a must have accessory. Unlike a lot of other filter effects, you really can't mimic the polarizing effect using software. Peter’s suggestion of getting one polarizer and stepping rings is a good idea. Another way to go is to invest in a Cokin polarizer and filter holder with adaptor rings for each lens. I use the same Cokin P series polarizer on all my lens which would otherwise require 4 different filter sizes.

I can't tell you anything about the remote you've listed, but I can tell you that the Pentax Remote F does work on bulb mode. You have to keep pressing on the button to keep the shutter open; a bit of a pain but it does work.

As most everyone else has said, McBains is probably the best choice. They will price match and they also have a reasonable selection of Pentax gear in stock. The main store is the best place to shop (107th Ave & 109th Street).
Your friend might also luck into a good deal on the K100D or K10D at London Drugs. They don't usually keep much in stock though; when I bought my K10D & D16-45/4, the camera was one of two they had in stock in the city and it was the last lens to be had.

I've been using a Lenspen on my camera lenses and telescope eypeices for years. Works great for me, and never had a problem with scratches, scum, or scraps.

That's pretty much been my experience with the K10D so far. I pretty much dial in +0.3 or +0.6 for every shot.

Three thoughts:
1) First, find a photographer(s) who's work you like, and study his/her photographs. Figure out how they captured particular images, and try it yourself. Repeat until you are comfortable with your technique.
2) To follow-up on Mike's comment, set assignments for yourself. Impose limitations on your shooting to force you to take a closer look at your subject and maybe make some shots you otherwise would never consider.
3) Read a good book or two on composition. My personal favorite is Freeman Patterson's "Photography and the Art of Seeing", but there are others.
By the way, your already off to a great start; some nice images on your site.

I'm quite happy with the K10D. I haven't used any other DSLR, so I can't make any direct comparisons. But at the end of the day, it does what I need it to do (and more) and is a joy to use.
As for photos, I'll have some from the K10D up on my blog very soon.

Hello one and all. I've been lurking and reading the Forums for a couple of months, and have finally gotten around to officially joining the group. I've been shooting with Pentax gear since I contracted 'photography fever' about 6 years ago. Started out with an ME Super, moved up through a series of film SLRs, and finally joined the digital world with a K10D about a month ago.
Looking forward to mingling with you all.

I recently went through the same thing, deciding whether to get a check after market battery or a Pentax model for my K10D. In the end, the cheapo aftermarkets didn't instill much faith in me. I did end up getting a Konica Minolta NPH400 for cheap. My advice is to get a battery with a reputable name, rather than take the chances of frying your $1000 camera with a $10 battery.
