Pentax DA* 60-250mm autofocus: an exercise in frustration

What you're describing seems to be a different problem than I have with my 60-250mm. When the lens is mounted to body the focus ring will not turn manually (by hand). No change in behaviour when flipping AFS/C or lens AF/MF switches. I can sometimes get the lens's focus ring to operate by vigorously twisting the focus ring to infinity and back for a minute or so before mounting to the camera. Unfortunately I can't rely on it to always auto focus after the warmup. It will eventually get stuck again and into the bag it goes. To bad. It's relatively light with great image quality.

I'm a back button focus type but I can't see how that would be related to the problem we're having. The 60-250 lens will not focus period. Not manually or SDM driven auto focus. The focus ring on the lens will not move when mounted on the camera.

I'd like to know if anyone has any troubleshooting ideas. It's a terrific lens and I'd like to fix or at least find reasonable work around for the problem.

So this not a SDM problem but some type of deficiency with the body's screw drive coupler control that is preventing SDM to operate?

I seem to be having a similar if not the same problem as the OP with my 60-250 mounted to a K1.

When first mounted after some time off camera, I can't turn the focus ring and the K1 won't operate the SDM. Switching the lens to MF doesn't free the focus ring. When I take the lens off the camera the focus ring will turn freely. Off camera, if I move the focus to infinity and remount, the SDM will slowly step the ring to minimum focus and remain in that state. This is very strange behaviour since the SDM is functioning but only in one direction. After several mount/unmount attempts the focus starts to function, SDM operates normally and the quick shift works. I'm trying to find the secret sauce sequence to get this lens to work without the frustration of continuous mounting and cursing.

Does the camera need focus lock to enable quick shift? And/or does the camera somehow sense a SDM focus problem and for some reason won't release the clutch on the screw drive to manually focus?

Unfortunately I don't have my K7 with me to test it on that.

WG-3 Lens Condensation

My WG-3 is experiencing periodic internal lens condensation just behind the first element. The camera had never been immersed in water or exposed to heavy rain situations.

In the transition from indoors to outdoors after being indoors for several hours, condensation forms behind the first lens element and obviously severely impacts image quality. After about an hour or so outdoors the condensation disappears. This happens over and over again day after day.

Has anyone experienced this issue? If so what was your corrective action? The camera is still under warranty so unless I can figure a way to successfully mitigate I will return it to Pentax and see if they can solve it

Do we like it or not

I like it for what it's intended for. I don't think the K-01 is targeted at experienced DSLR users as a replacement or upgrade. The camera is going to appeal to consumers that are wanting to step up from P&S to a higher end camera that has the potential image quality and video capabilities of the K-01 without the perception of DSLR complexity. As well being able to experience the LBA phenomenon when they discover the vast array of old and new lens to choose from will be interesting to see. The Pentax brand may also have some advantage here for the boutique coolness with it's roots back to the dawn of SLRs and the backward compatibility to all of those lens out there. It think Pentax made some tough decisions to offer this set of features and functionally at this price point in order to capture new customers to the brand.

What made you choose a Pentax?

I vividly remember going to McBain camera at the Westmount mall in Edmonton when I should have been attending high school. There inside the camera display case was a Pentax Spotmatic. I never did had the money to buy it. I must have been a major PITA for the store owner but he did seem to tolerate my frequent visits to eyeball the camera "not you again kaufman ;)". After that the Pentax name was branded to me. Sentiment aside, Pentax DSLRs have the total capability I was looking for. Not particularly excelling at any one thing, the word synergy comes to mind.

Did you buy it from a Canadian dealer? I'm asking because I can't find a reasonability priced 60-250 in Canada right now. Prodigital and 123easy have had them back ordered for several weeks now. I wonder how much much duty and tax I'd have to pay for one shipped from the US. Sorry to go off topic.

DA* 200mm with 1.4 TC sharpness

Has anyone compared the overall sharpness of a DA* 200mm using a 1.4-1.7 TC with a DA 50-300mm at or around 300mm or prime (like a Tak) or another consumer zoom in that price range? I'm assessing if using a DA* 200mm with TC would be better than buying a lower cost zoom to get out to 300mm or more when I need it.

Thanks Greg

Just to clarify for me, which did you find had the better IQ, the 50-135 or the Tamron 70-200?

I reviewed the threads Ash provided for the Sigma HSM and Tamron 70-200s. BTW I hope Ash is on high ground.

I know cost wise it would be much less expensive to get a Sigma HSM or Tamron than going with a Pentax DA* 50-135 and DA* 200. Too bad there are no camera shops in my area that would have Pentax, Tamron and Sigma glass that I hold and test in the store. Consequently my purchasing decisions to a large degree have been made by reading experiences of other forum members. SDM issues aside, I get an overall positive impression of the DA* IQ. I'm very happy with my 16-50. We'll see what Adam's review has to say about the Sigma and Tamron comparison.

I'll be looking forward to the review Adam. Will you be reviewing the current Sigma HSM Macro version or the older screw drive one. Some of the forum lens reviewers weren't all that happy with the sharpness of the HSM Macro version below 5.6.

The suggestion to use the Sigma 70-200mm with a TC is worth considering. The HSM would be nice to have if it is as near as good as the Tamron's wide aperture performance.

My kit doesn't cover the 50mm plus focal lengths well enough for me. So I've been trying to make a decision on the most effective way to cover this range. I think I've got the glass I want from 16-50mm. I'll see what the UWA options are in the future. Right now I can only afford to spend up to $2K CDN to cover 50mm+.

I've been seriously looking at the DA* 60-250mm and understand it's very good but might not be fast enough for me at the wide end and might not have quite the reach at the long end for wildlife. As well I hear the 60-250mm is not very teleconverter friendly.

If I could afford it I would go for the DA* 50-135mm, *200mm and *300mm. But that is almost 3 grand in my world and probably grounds for divorce. I'm sure she will be seeking legal advise in any case :D Although she does kinda support the idea of ONE telephoto.

I thought about trying the Bigma. It covers the FLs I want and more but it's not fast enough or probably not practical to haul around for shorter end shooting.

So now it's come down to getting the DA* 50-135mm and something to cover the FLs beyond 135mm. I'd like to get some of your thoughts. Some options I've been pondering are a Sigma 120-400mm or a DA 50-300mm or 200/300mm Tak primes or just get the 60-250mm or...

I only have up to $2K CDN to spend.

SDM repair costs and secondary failure rates

Sounds interesting. I'm looking at buying a used K10D along with a 3 year old DA* 16-50mm and have been weighing the risk of a future SDM failure. What is the reason for rolling back to the hacked 1.10 FW and not just downgrade to 1.20?
Also this info helps me with the inspection check to make sure the camera is at 1.30+ to see if the SDM is functioning.

Thanks
Greg

Welcome to the forum. I know you will find that this forum has a wealth of information on Pentax stuff and photography in general. I think you will be very happy with the Kx. The one thing I find great about Pentax DSLR bodies are the compatibility and image stabilization with the older inexpensive lens. Also check out the forum's marketplace. You may find some good prices on used gear.

I can't tell the difference between the Extreme III and the Pany. Both have performed well in the K7 except the intermittent write problem with the Pany.

Right on that's what I figured. I have a Panasonic Class 10 16G SDHC card. I expected it to be as fast as my 8G Extreme III. Never the less, one would think the software wouldn't let the user interrupt the write process with a button push. I'll just have to pay attention to the blinking light:D

I have a K7 with the same type of card as the OP and have problems as well. I find the problem occurs when I quickly chimp after shooting. No other problems so far. I now pause a second before viewing the LCD and this seems to mitigate the problem.

$850 new with warranty sounds like a good price. Was that including tax? When I compare new with used prices I keep reminding myself to add the tax. Then the decision becomes less obvious.

I've been looking on the forum's marketplace for several months now and it seems to me that folks selling SDM lenses seem to take longer to sell and for less than asking price. If there's a good deal right out there right now on a SDM lens, is it worth the risk? Anyone know the average SDM repair cost? Has anyone had repaired SDM fail?
