Yes, I can't quite put my finger on it, but the FA seems to render a more natural image. I don't know if it's the contrast, saturation or more even spread of sharpness, but either way it looks fabulous in my eyes.
I think this will be at least a backup keeper when Pentax eventually goes full frame digital.

I don't see any direct comparisons. Maybe I'm not searching accurately

I recently opted for a K-x in favor of the K-7 and wanted to compare the std zoom included with the K-x (it was cheaper to buy with lens than body only!).
Well I'm pretty impressed with the much discussed 'kit' DAL lens but I have to say my old FA 28-70 beats it for IQ.
I'm noticing more Chrom Abbrev at the wider angles for the 18-55 DAL and I'm seeing a slight increase in sharpness for FA 28-70. I know the FA doesn't go as wide, but even at comparable mild wide angles my old FA is more than holding it's own in comparison.
There is zero vignetting on an APS-C for the full frame designed FA which is an added bonus along with F4 at all focal lengths.
Has anyone else compared these two lens for IQ?

Looking at the reviews, test reports and sample pics of the Tamron 17-50/f2.8, it does seem unbeatable Value (B&H $460ish). Fast and IQ looks very impressive which is important to me.
I can fix the slight issue of 17mm barrel distortion in Photoshop if needed....unless the K-7 can do it automatically?
Prefer if it had a sonic motor but not a big deal.
Tamron will probably be getting my business!
Thanks you for all the helpful advise :)

With the 28-70 being design for full frame I had the impression it holds up better towards the edge on APS-C format. I don't think it beats it by a lot though.
I'll check out the Sigma you mentioned.
Thanks.

Thanks for this!
Does anyone know how the IQ of the 16-45 compares with the 17-70?

I see the 16-50 F2.8 is around $770 at B&H. I'm not sure I can justify that much cost but the 17-70 F4 at around $480 seems viable for me.
I forgot to mention that I have 50mm F1.4 FA which is one of the sharpest I have ever used. Up there with my past 50mm 1.8 Super Takumar. So I can use this is low light and portrait shots to great effect.
Still the idea of just carrying just the 18-250mm is worth thinking about. I need to check out the IQ.
I'm probably leaning towards the 17-70mm F4 right now.
Thanks again for the responses and suggestions to consider. This helps a lot :)

Thanks for the responses. I'll def check out the DA 16-50. I didn't know others beyond the kit lens were weather sealed so that's an added bonus. I'll put that top of my short list so far but the 18-250 also sound interesting and I'll take a closer look.
Thanks again! :)

I'm about to purchase a K-7 and wondered if anyone has any recommendations for a std zoom lens in the range of 17/18mm-70/75mm?
I already have an old Pentax 28-70 F4 AL FA which gives pretty good results but was considering something new that would stretch a little wider.
I also have a Takumar 70-210 F to cover telephoto so I could go a little shorter on the telephoto end with a 18-55 WR. But I'm thinking this kit lens, although good, would be going backwards regarding IQ compared to my old 28-70 FA.
I'm open to consider 3rd party offerings from Sigma or Tokina etc, but would prefer to stick with Pentax.
Any recommendations?
Thank you!

Yeah, I was just thinking that. It looks like the focus point is just in front of the subject. The water just in front of the duck looks crisp.
I would swap the lens and see if it's a calibration issue with the Sigma lens only before recalibrating. Nothing else wrong here.

I'm sure Samsung is not resting on it's laurels. Just look at the fierce battle between Sony and Samsung in the LCD/LED TV battle. They both have the finance and know how for making top notch sensors.
Unless Samsung pulls out of the digital camera market completely, I am pretty sure they have Sony's new sensor under the microscope and they're frantically trying to work out how to make a better low noise sensor for the near future. Mark my words :D

Intermittent does suggest a dry contact somewhere. I had similar issue on my ist DS.

is it intermittant or permanant? My guess is unreliable contact of connector between sensor and main board and you need to take apart and clean contacts on connector(s).

Try ebay. I've seen Repair manuals for various Pentax DSLRs going very cheap.

It's $1069 at newegg with the 18-55 WR with the $100 rebate. Possibly squeeze it down to $1019 if you can argue the coupon which ends today. Shipping Extra.

Generally yes. They come and go every few weeks. Free shipping drifts in and out too. I have lost count the number of laptops, iplayers, memory and cameras I've purchased from them. Great service.
Depending on item, I sometimes get a better price on Amazon occasionally from other reputable sellers.
