I agree. The DA 70 was my first Limited lens, and oh how I wish I had packed it when I moved to Europe for a year. I wanted to travel light, and somehow that meant leaving a pancake prime the size of two Oreo cookies in storage. :o

Great shot of that curled fern.

That swan has such energy! Seems almost to be blowing the reeds away from her. You must have been very close to get that shot with a 40mm.

Three shots of the otherworldly Faro de la Punta del Hidalgo lighthouse in Tenerife, Spain. All taken with the smc DA21. The lighthouse has no doors, windows, stairs, railings, bricks, or other architectural details that might give it some scale or approachability. So please know that it is a functioning lighthouse, about 50 meters (150 feet) tall, on an island territory of Spain. Yes, it's weird, but that's partly why I love it so.

The 70mm is really nice on the trail under the trees. Seems not to mind the mottled light and dark at all and renders plants very nicely... (I've posted this before, but it shows what I mean)

I like its bokeh in that situation as well.

Took the GRiii as my only camera on a recent trip to Rome.
Most of my trips are wildlife oriented and require a heavy backpack full of bodies and lenses.
What an absolute joy traveling with just the GRiii!

A great explanation. I kind of feel sorry you had to invest so much time in writing it, but it's spot on.

It's undeniable that the photo business/hobby is dominated by older mails who like to seem knowledgeable. This could be off-putting to some, so Ricoh wanted to make to clear this is going to be fun for everyone. I think I would written it differently myself, but they had the best of intentions.

Link to the tweet about the event:
https://twitter.com/ricohimaging_jp/status/1541013445117878272?s=20&t=VqK1QHe_asiySPqND9CquA

The even happened at the (very, very hot) weekend. Looking at the tweet, it seems that two of the eight attendees were women, which is not bad.

Referring to reh321's question, this walk was pitched as a how-to event, teaching people how to use the camera that they may not even own yet. It is not so much about the artistic aspects. However, of course attendees are out there taking pictures, so they are learning about photography.

Ricoh has many events that are more about the artistic aspects of photography delivered through their Photo Academy. The latest one was announced last Friday, and it is to be delivered by a female pro.
??????????????????? | ?????????????? | ????????????RICOH IMAGING

What I think is really great about these walks is that their staff actually accompany real users while they are using the cameras, which then gives them insights they can pass on to the design team. They've been doing this for years with the GR events too.

This is going to be long.

The original language in question is "初心者の方や女性の方でも安心".
初心者の方=a beginner or beginners.
女性の方=a woman or women.
でも=sometimes like an adverb "even", sometimes totally different.
安心=state or act of not having to worry, nothing to be bothered with, feeling safe and comfortable.

Ricoh is saying "this is a friendly environment for anybody". If you twist people's arms to give you a direct translation about でも, some will say "even beginners and women" but that doesn't mean "even if you're a beginner or woman who don't usually belong to this kind of thing". It's more like

"Even if you have some hesitations as a beginner or a woman, don't worry, this is a welcoming place for you and anybody else."

If you REALLY want to have a glimpse of social aspect of this, google 女性でも安心 and you'll find hundreds of things that are supposedly friendly and worry-free for women. Apartment with great security, disposal business that sends people to haul your heavy items away, gym with female instructors and spacious clean shower/locker/change room, you can find pretty much anything that is advertised or reviewed as 女性でも安心. (BTW these are real examples found by googling.)

They don't mean that women are usually unwelcome/unworthy/inferior. If they do they'll lose customers. Rather, 女性でも安心 is perceived, at least in the eyes of advertisers, as an added benefit which may attract women more than men. Maybe something is inconvenient or intimidating or unsafe or just not worth it for whatever reason for a substantial subset of women when these same things are considered OK by most men. (There are thousands of male-specific ads too, but 安心 isn't used as often when specifically targeting men.)

For example, the advertiser of that apartment is likely thinking that "you won't be bothered by stalkers, aggressive sales agents and thugs" is a great differentiator and some women will prefer this apartment over competitor's. Therefore, even though an added security is great for me too as a man in his 50's, they have to add 女性でも安心 to get these women's attention.

Getting back to Ricoh, why do they say 安心? What's there to worry about, it's just a photo walk, right? I can only guess, so let me make things up below.

First, Ricoh assumes that beginners (female and male alike) are probably worried about a lot of things. What if the lecturer sees your most basic questions ("but what does ISO mean?") as a hindrance/distraction to others. Maybe you're worried to find that your pictures are so much inferior to others'. Maybe a self-proclaimed "experienced" participant wants to teach you why your picture and technique and everything sucks. Either way, not worth the bother.

Second, Ricoh knows that participants are going to be mostly middle aged and older men. And Ricoh is probably aware of the phenomenon of mansplaining. Some of them might try to hit on a female participant, which might be an added annoyance. Not worth the bother.

Third, Ricoh knows that some just categorically equate women and beginners, therefore women are likely targeted by mansplainers and beginner-bashers at the same time. Not worth the bother, doubly.

Assuming that having fun is a focus of this event, Ricoh wanted to say "hey, don't worry, this is a nice friendly event for everybody, we promise you a safe environment, you're welcome regardless of who you are". That's the spirit of this and that's why many (I say most) are OK with this.

Well, that was a long preface!
My opinion about this is, unless Ricoh specifically explains why something is good for women and why something else is good for beginners, there's no denying that it sounds a bit like women are categorically put into the same bin as beginners. There's no need for that, they could have just written どなたでも安心 or "friendly/safe/welcoming for anybody" and be done with that.

My 65 year photography journey ends with the KP !

I have always had a deep rooted passion with photography from a very young age of about 12.
It all started when I watched a gentleman spend a couple hours composing a shot overlooking the Missouri River with a large field camera in Sioux City Iowa.
The Gentleman's name was Lee Russell , and he worked for the Sioux City Tribune that summer in 1941.

Mr Russell also had a small photography studio he shared with another photographer downtown next to the Barber shop that my father frequented.
It seems Mr. Russel had noticed a young girl intently watching him work on several occasions. She had endless questions about the "How" , "What" , and "Why" of capturing images with such a large and strange device.
Little did I know they were both members of the Homeless Mens Bureau and sat on the same county committee every month.

One day the following Spring my father came home with a small package just for me ! I was just tuning 13 and it was 1942 . Times were really tough back then and any gift was very hard earned. Mr Russell's enlightenment had somehow prompted my father to buy it for me because of my fascination with his photography work.

When I opened the package I could hardly believe my eyes , my very own Zeiss Ikoflex Camera !
I was in another world , and still can remember running around town doing every imaginable task just to buy more film. Mr Russel introduced me to processing that year , oh what a smelly affair !

My first Pentax was purchased for me by my Husband the day he proposed marriage about ten years later in 1953. He was a very smart man , and knew a simple engagement ring just wouldn't do it for this Lady, Ha ha !
It was a Pentax Asahiflex. Yes , it did the trick ! I married him the following week and stayed that way for over 62 years until his death a few years ago.

I have owned nearly every Pentax made to date , and used the heck out of every one of them. From the Asahiflex to the Spotmatics , H-1 , EX , MX , LX , PZ1 , and some I have even forgotten the names of.
The one model I never used or owned was the K1000. I dont know how that one slipped past , but it did.

I made the switch to digital a few years back with a new Pentax K30. That turned out to be the very first unhappy experience with any Pentax. It kept breaking down and getting sent back for repairs repeatedly.
I finally got disgusted with it and gave it to a young man in Showlow Arizona that knew what the problem was and said he could fix it . Good riddance !

And now this leads me here to this KP forum.
After the brief love affair with the K30 , and a replacement K5 that I used for nearly 5 years.....I saw the KP.:D
As soon as I saw the picture on B&H last year I knew I was going to investigate.
When I finally got one in my hands while in their store last year it was all over with , I bought one.
It has everything cosmetically that I could want. It looks like a Camera design from decades past. Somewhat of a cross between a 67 and a LX ! That is so Sexy to me !
I really liked my MZ-S film body , but this KP far outshines it too.

The features are so lovely too. I originally wanted a K-3II before handling the KP , but with a different screen that articulates , but no such luck.
When nothing new looked like it was in the works , I went ahead and bought 1 more of the KP models , so now I have 2.
I knew when I saw the looks and specs that this was MY camera , my very last camera.

Im using one PK body heavily , and keep one for a spare to avoid going through anything similar to the K30 fiasco ever again.
Have since sold , donated , and gifted all my old film bodies and gear , and even the K-5.
I did keep all my M42 Pentax lenses and K mount Pentax lenses that Ive acquired over the years.
Of course my old Zeiss isnt going anywhere , nor the Asahiflex my husband caught me with...Haha.

This Old Lady may only shoot in JPG , but the KP is HelenJo Approved !
