I was up at 5am (4EST) here in Halifax, NS. Put my coat on and went out on the deck, I wasn't too hopeful as light pollution here is pretty bad too.

I looked over the front of the house where the sky was darkest, it was clear so I could see quite a few stars, despite the afforementione light pollution. Looked for about 3-5 mins, without any luck, turned around looked again for a while, counted to 30 and thought "oh well going in the house", opened the door and turned around for one last look and....bingo! There was a shooting star, unfortunately I didn't have a camera set up.

Not quite the 300-500 per hour rate as I'd seen quoted on one of the news sites! :)

I too purchased Yvon's ebook about the K20D. I agree it's well worth the 5 bucks, have only skimmed through it so far, but appears to be a lot easier to follow than the manual.

You should check the firmware revision on your K20D too (hold menu button whilst turrning it on).

I just purchased a K20D, it had rev 1.01 on it, latest is 1.03, which apparently had some tweaks and improvements in it.

Newbie purchase Kx/K20D/Samsung GX-20?

If it's possible I would say go to a local camera shop and, if available, handle both the cameras.

I just went through the same process, and while I also agree the k-x is a very fine camera, I opted for the K20 instead in the end. For me the superior build quality and overall feel of the K20 outweighed the k-x's superior high ISO and AF performance. I did find the K20s AF and ISO performance to be good enough for me though, and a big leap from my old K100D. I just wish I could have both!

But you may find, as others have, that the K20 is too big a beast! :)

Pentax Flashes for k20d

Hi,

The Pentax AF200T seems to get some good press around here. It will work in "Auto" Mode, of which there are two, one for shorter ranges and the other longer. If I remember rightly if you are in Tv mode it will set the camera to the correct F stop when used in either of these modes. It also has fully manual mode, with 4 levels of luminance, which is apparently handy if you get into the off camera flash scene (strobist?), I have some triggers on order to try this out myself.

The AF200S is fine too, but only has 100% flash in manual mode.

Hi er1kksen,

Can you tell me how you would compare the overall performance and feel of the K-x to your K20D? I recently bought the K-x but am now looking at maybe returning it for the K20D, I found the K20D felt alot more comfortable for me to hold, and I agree about the small grip on the K-x, that was my first reaction on picking it up.

My major concern with the K20D though is the low light AF performance. I found the K-x a revelation after using the K100d for the last few years.

Thanks,

Colin.

For Canadian buyers I see that they have the K-x plus 18-55mm kit lens for CDN$649 at Black's, sale is advertised until Nov 8th. I don't see it advertised online, but in store it was.

Picked one up yesterday...happy so far though I kind of wish it was the same size as my trusty old K100D :)

SIGMA 70-210MM F4-5.6 on DSLR

Hi,

Can someone tell me if the Sigma 70-210MM F4-5.6 UC-II AF should autofocus on a Penatx DSLR? I was under the assumption it would. Just received a new one and it will only focus manually. I tried it on two different bodies. Is there a setting I'm neglecting to set on the camera? I do have the K100d setup to accept Manual lenses and have had no problem using them.

Thanks in advance,

Colin.

Thanks for the welcome.....strange how all you repliees are from Down under, as my brother emigrated there around the same I came over here. I don't speak to him much though...he's firmly in the Canon camp :) one of those enormous 40d jobs.

lucky lot you, going into summer...then again your winter isn't much colder than our summer most of the time!

Hello from a wet and windy Maritimes (Dartmouth, NS).

I came here looking for a camera for my daughter and found what seems to be an excellent source of knowledge about all things Pentax, and to top it all off very friendly!

I, myself have a K100D and have dabbled in and out of photography for many years now. I'm from the UK originally and my first SLR was the tank like Russian Zenit TTL (Olympic edition), I then migrated to the Chinon CE4 (with PK mount). After this I purchased a Canon T70 on one of my first visits to Canada before emigrating here. Then came the kids, and it seemed to become a chore dragging around an SLR with them.....hello point and shoot! A couple of digital point and shoots later and I fell for the K100D about 2 years ago now, and loved it ever since, picking up several older lenses as well as the Tamron 70-300 LD Di along the way. I've taken a couple of basic courses...but keep forgetting most of what I learn....not enough practice.

My Dad always loved Pentax cameras, and so for sentimental reasons I also found a nice ME Super and many accessories for a reasonable price on E-bay.

Enough about me, thanks in advance for all and any help I get while frequenting these pages! :)
