So took the beast out to try again at my nemesis. This is a semi dead tree on the other side of the lake that is a favorite roost for cormorants and darters. In the past I have tried the standard viewfinder eyepiece, and a tenpa magnifying eyepiece - 1.35x. In this try I used a tripod and liveview. In all cases birds at the top of the tree tend to be soft and I get better pics at the bottom of the tree. The first picture is the top of the tree, the second the bottom. The third picture shows how far the tree is away. Remember this is a 400mm prime.

Pentax Optio P80 using the in-camera monochrome filter and final adjustments in Lightroom. This is a water spigot that dates to the construction of the Vancouver WA train depot which was built in 1908.

I used a Pentax Optio P80 for this shot. After taking the image I used the in-camera filter to apply the sepia filter. Then in Lightroom I adjusted the sky for a deeper color tone and made the rest of the image monochrome. BNSF Vancouver Terminal, Vancouver, WA.

Pentax Q7 with #06 telezoom. 45mm ISO 200 F2.8 1/80. Wish I'd had camera set to ISO 400 but wasn't expecting to see a raccoon when looking over the bridge side.
Thanks for looking,

This was taken with a Nikon 1, since I traveled with carry-on only, and my Pentax wouldn't fit. Didn't expect I could use this photo at Pentax Forums :) |

rm2:
This picture isn't eligible for the contest since it was taken around 1974 with a Pentax SP500. I lost almost all of my B&W prints and negatives in a fire back in '83, but 4 boxed carousels of slides survived when the fire burned out the floor of the closet they were stashed in and they fell into a fire-hose-water-filled basement. I recovered them along with some other stuff (including my SP500) and dried them out. That accounts for all of the "crud" on the scanned slide.
I just wanted to add something for your contest since I know it's hard to get people to participate sometimes, but this is a great topic and I hope you get a lot of entries.
P.S.: And yes, the SP500 was my only camera and still working when I went digital with an Optio 50L in 2006. After pulling it from the water-filled basement I just rinsed it off inside and out with clean water, then set it in the sun to dry. After a few days of drying, it worked perfectly. It still smells vaguely like burned apartment, and there's no fungus in the 55mm/f2.0 lens, although it's yellowed somewhat (I think it's one of the thorium-glass lenses).

Free bump for my fave 6mp DSLR, which I still own and refuse to sell. I have a lot of fond memories shooting the original *istD series and they still make nice clean 6mp images! Heck, I shot my niece's wedding on one back in the day, with a full 8x10 wedding album I gave her. It's a great little cam.

Thanks. I actually do not bump saturation up as a rule for a few years now (means almost never, rules are here to be broken, but only with a reason). I like realistic colors my camera and lenses produce, so I start RAW processing with a profile based on either "film like curves" or curves based on what the camera have set, and try to only change exposure, contrast (restraining myself here as well), highlights compression and color balance - colors/levels wise, if possible. Sometimes with slight additional curves touches with high dynamic range pictures. Since I started to use this workflow, I am more satisfied with the results, compared to when I always started with auto levels button, which at least for me almost always creates oversaturated and
too high contrast result, often hard to get back to something naturally looking. I am using RawTherapee.

I've had this experience, too. It's frustrating, but aside from starting a fire to clear the view (not recommended), what can you do but try somewhere else?

That's how life is.
Some times the "other side of the mountain" looks just like the side you are already familiar with.
