Recommended Fixes to Pentax Video mode Firmware.

Speaking as a Cinematographer, who uses Pentax lenses on many other cameras (see list below), the following is a list of changes that Pentax should implement if there is any chance of them getting the Video firmware to match the high standards of the Stills firmware.

- Return of Sensor Shift in Video.
- Full size HDMI port on Full Frame Camera / Half size HDMI Port on APSc cameras, with 10-bit Output.
- HDMI output updated to output 24, 25, or 30 fps DURING RECORDING, set to follow the resolution and frame rate set by the user to record internally.
- Optional 4K HDMI output at 24, 25 and 30 fps without internal recording.
- NO Overlays on HDMI output.
- Higher frame rates - 48, 50 and 60p will be needed soon to stay competitive.
- User choice of CoDec - h.264 @ minimum 50mBits for 1080p, 200mBits for 4K, and Mjpeg for 1080p at 100mBits or higher.
- On board display of Audio Input levels.
- Adjustment of Audio Input levels while recording.
- Focus Peaking on the LCD while recording, with selection of White, Red, Green or Blue peaking display.
- True Zebra overlay for adjustable exposure percentage settings (80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110% IRE)

Pentax will need 4K internal recording in any replacement for the K-3 and K-1 series. HD 'only' bodies will not sell now that all competitive brands offer 4K recording.

Several of the above suggestions should be possible on all models from K-01 through to K-1, via firmware updates.
All of the above are functions found in competitors cameras at similar price points to the Pentax models.

The K-01 should not have been released with the HDMI forcing Playback Only operation - that really needs to be fixed. As an owner of two K-01's, I can not express adequately how frustrating it is to not be able to record externally from the ideal camera body for video production.

Stewart Fairweather.
Cinematographer and Pentax Owner.

( Yes, I am available for consultation and testing for these changes )

I currently use my collection of nearly 20 K-mount lenses on the following bodies, all except the older Canon's recording to an Atomos Shogun.

Canon - 550D, 650D, 7D.
Panasonic - AG-AF100, GH4, GH5, G80, GX85.
Sony - A7s, FS100, FS700, FS5, FS7.

Blackmagic Design - Cinema Camera and Pocket Cinema Camera.

Aja Cion 4K Digital Cinema Camera

I'd love to be able to list my K-01's in this list, and be able to update to a K-3, K-1 or KP.

@420mm, with pixel shift applied and at 1:1, you can even see two bands on Jupiter

HDR processing from K70

Doing a 3-shot burst in bracketing mode is a good alternative. However, these days a single raw file usually has enough dynamic range for you to be able to get an HDR effect if you just lift the shadow and reduce the highlights.

Windows 10 compatible software for DVD backup

I would be cautious using DVDs for archival backup. While the 'pressed' ones that movies are on will last a very long time, the DVD writable media is a different story. Longevity varies greatly across brands and quality but in general are not to be relied on for archival backup. If you insist on using DVDs make sure you buy ones that are labeled as archival and state how long they are supposed to last.

At the very least consider making new backup disks every few years.

4K capable cameras are expanding....CaNikOny...Oly/Fuji..have all recently incorportated into some models.

Panasonic offer it in p/s and the last 7 ILC models.

Go to Nikon/Canon then. Bye :)

You can still get Light weight lenses. The 3 new FF zooms are made to satisfy pro's, not average Joe taking pics for flowers in his backyard. I love the 70-200 and it doesn't feel any heavier then I'm used to with other pro zooms from other brands. Quality is more important then weight and size.

There is already enough lenses for doing a good job for pro's on FF. And more is coming too. Maybe you are one of those who will complain until they release 100 lenses and still only buy 2?

Only hilariously funny thing here, is your whining post.

It funny how folks like you just go about your business, make a comment in an obscure thread every now and then and just enjoy taking pictures. Where as those who have switched from Pentax to Nikon or Canon, are in here proselytizing every chance they get.

It doesn't matter how often you tell these people, you don't need 55 focus points. (90% of my images are centre point). They don't get it. :D

It doesn't matter how many times you tell folks you are satisfied with 24 MP. They don't get it. :D

It doesn't matter how many times you tell them, that shooting by your D800 buddies and comparing image, folks choose which image they like based on your composition and their interest in the subject matter, not by the resolution of the image, which often is not even apparent.. They don't get it. :D

It doesn't matter how many times I point out, our best selling image was taken with a 10 MP Optio 90 W, they don't get it. :D

There are a lot of people here who are thick as a brick with the heads stuck so far up their butts, they can't see, to the point, I've come to the conclusion, it's deliberate attention seeking behaviour. Thank god for the ignore function.

There are times when you just want to scream "Despite every technical deficiency you just pointed out in my K-3, it still has way more to offer than this camera you think is better, for my usage." The question is not "do they understand that." The question is, is their cantankerous in your face repetition of technical facts a deliberate tactic to get someone to talk to them because they are so lonely?"

"I like this camera more than the one you think is so great." is not the starting point of personal attacks, name calling and and endless stream of technical trivia that most people don't even care about. It's a statement of personal preference. This is a Pentax forum. Folks who can't read someone saying that about Pentax gear without calling them fanboys or whatever shouldn't even be allowed here.

What some folks don't seem to understand is people can read up about Pentax cameras, obtain one somewhere, decide they like the camera and post that online. That is not an invitation for some know it all to attempt an attitude adjustment.

Pentax user "I like my camera."
Negative forum members. " The AF is no good, it doesn't take good pictures, my camera is better than yours any $5000 Canikon camera is better."
These folks aren't on my forum... I ignore them. What I don't understand why the forum in general allows their participation.

There is something wrong when preferring the camera you bought makes you subject to ridicule, name calling and personal attacks. For some, I bought and use this camera because I like it is taken a an invitation for abuse.

I takes some kind of nerve to look at someone else's camera preference and say " This is why your choice is wrong." It's nobody else's choice, and unless it's asked for, no opinion is needed.

That wasn't removed. There never has been one in mid range Pentax bodies. The K-3 was the first the have one, and now the K-1. This is a development of the K-s2 body. Didn't have one either (nor compo adjustment or a MTF program line Pentax probably considers them enthusiast features). The sharpest image is going to be somewhere between F5.6 an F8 (F7.1) with any lens. So I don't see much use for MTF program.

Why can't Pentax do something like Fuji did with X-T2?

Why is it that people can't understand that some users would PREFER to use a large sensor camera for video, and not a camcorder, and yet they really love their Pentax Cameras for photography, so if Pentax had good video functions, we wouldn't have to buy two entire camera systems, and adding good video doesn't harm you (the photograph only person) in any way, just don't use it if you don't want to!

Pentax is the value brand, with tons of features. Video would only help to sell that, right?

p.s.
When said users who enjoy videography are trying to have a discussion, please don't interject with "but I don't need it so I don't want it" useless statements. If video people like us feel like venting a bit, leave us be.

As with many things... even when governments do enact the laws. There is no enforcement enabling monetary support. When they passed similar legislation on another issue, the RCMP said "we can't afford to use the criminal code tools we already have, giving us more responsibility isn't going to help that, without new funding". And this is what is so wrong with monopoly capitalism. The goal is not success through excellence, the goal is success through monopoly practices.

When ever they think of a new social program that could help disadvantaged kids, they always ask "who is going to pay for this." When someone proposes new copyright laws, no one ever says "who's going to pay for this?" as if there are going to be no enforcement costs. It's absolute hypocrisy. It's simple, these laws are a drain on all other tax payer funded programs. They are a subsidy for the big companies that ask for them to be implemented. It's just handing them tax payer dollars. In our society, while that's not ok to do things that help the citizen population, it's quite acceptable to use big bucks to lobby for tax subsidies if you're a large corporation.

They shoud receive absolutely no tax deductions for lobbyists, in fact whatever they pay trying to get favourable legislation passed, they should have to put up the same amount into a fund for the competing public defence. It costs a lot of tax payer money to investigate and evaluate these get rich quick schemes. The tax payer shouldn't be paying that. The companies who want the changes should be paying the whole shot, lobby, and counter lobby, and no legislation for any industry should be undertaken without a funding model, paid for by the industry in question. If the movie industry wants tougher copyright laws, they should accept higher taxes on their product to pay the costs of added enforcement. That shouldn't be shared by those of us who think they make enough money as it is.

K-3 II = better for video ?

Ahhh, I think what Gabriel is referring to with the 'sharp' reference, is the high contrast vision you get from current phone sensors.

That is a function of the image profile settings used, and I think you probably could get that out of a DSLR, but the majority of cinematographic minded users tend to turn down the sharpening and contrast in the camera when we want more latitude in post-production.

Those same super sharp images may look fine on a home TV, tablet or laptop, but on a larger screen, such as lit by a projector, the high contrast images of phones are,... rather unpleasant to the eye - Highly crushed highlights and shadows.

One would also need to know, are we talking about a HD tv, or a 4K tv - The higher resolution you source the media in, the better it looks on lower resolution screens, so 4K on HD will look sharper, or even just more in focus, then HD on HD.
And HD video looks soft on 4K screens.

Canon's really need ML to make the best of them,... and one still turns the sharpening down for the best results in Post.

A7s footage with Pentax SMC glass is phenomenally good btw, but even it falls apart when pushed too far in post.

And throwing the cat in to the pigeons,... Wonder how many of the 'buy a video camera' crowd realise that ALL 'D'SLR's and MILCs are based on 'Video' camera sensor technology, not the other way around.

Stills cameras use large size CCD and CMOS sensors from Video Cameras.

Looking at what has been done with other MILCs, I'm guessing that a tilting LCD would be more likely, and even that might add an unacceptable amount to its depth.
