Is HD video from a K3 normally this awful?

@RobG: I'd recommend trying Da Vinci Resolve 14 (from BlackMagic Design, Aussie company). The free version has almost everything you could realistically need to edit, colorize etc your footage.
It also now includes full Fairlight Audio post production tools.
I use it on a fairly old machine without problems to edit all the videos I shoot at our local music club.

PS: It handles all my .MOV and .MTS files without any complaints.

Here's the link to download

Actually resolution is a factor;
...when such apparatus are capable, using the maximum storage capacity, of capturing video in a quality of 800 x 600 pixels (or higher) at 23 frames per second (or higher) for a continuous period of at least 30 minutes (regardless of the fact that the captured video images may be recorded in separate files of a duration of less than 30 minutes (see also Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 876/2014)) they are always to be classified in subheadings 8525 80 91 or 8525 80 99.
Tariff Notice 21 (2016): Digital cameras and video camera recorders - GOV.UK

As mentioned above, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc are NOT members of the EU therefore the tax would NOT apply so neither would any restriction.
However, I would readily believe the limited recording time is more likely there to prevent damage from high internal temperaturesd (thus protecting the manufacture from potentially thousands more warranty claims) . Over-heating IS born out by empirical evidence. As DLSRs and MFT bodies have been getting more compact and filled with more high end tech including sensors pushed to their High ISO limits, and SD card writing even faster heat is even more of a concern than it was in 2006. There is zero ventilation inside camera bodies, esp the sealed bodies.
A camcorder makes much better sense for long periods of unbroken video recording - many have cooling fans.

Because there will never be an MX-2 or improvements to MX-1 via firmware and because Pentax are not committed to their cameras or customers.

Are you not emptying your cards onto your PC for processing then copying onto backup devices?
Then formatting the card in camera (or with SDFormatter) for re use?

Faststone now "does" video

Well I see thumbnails for all video types in Windows explorer but only .avi in Faststone 6.3. So that's kind'a odd :-/

---------- Post added 09-06-17 at 09:20 PM ----------

Clearing the thm database had no effect. I've contacted support to see what they say. I'll pass on any solutions we come up with because video thumbnails in FSIV would be very useful to me.
I'm not interested in the internal video player mostly because it lacks many useful functions present in my preferred player.

Pretty useless without video thumbnails though don't you think? Maybe next update...

EDIT: Only .avi thumbs seem to be supported in Faststone. .MOV and .MP4 not.
I don't know of any digital cameras that save as .AVI these days.

I'll stick to Windows Explorer, it shows all my video thumbnails (all, even .mkv and .mts etc).

Sorry, Tom but I must strongly disagree with this video. I had K-7 and the footage I shot with it was much better than even the first section of your linked video. At one point I wonder if the user even had SR enabled.
Every IBIS system has a level of bounce-back when 'panning' too quickly. SR is a 'shake reduction' system 'SHAKE' as in unsteady hands. Not a swinging/panning reduction system. This will always confuse IBIS and is an unrealistic expectation on the part of the user to assume otherwise.
If you want smooth pans, use a tripod and a fluid head.

K1 Video is not that bad

That's quite acceptable footage for those who don't regard anything not 4K as rubbish.
But again, Pentax have shot themselves in the foot with that totally destructive digital SR. They must be blind.
Excellent kite, when it wasn't getting snagged up on it's own pilot kite :D

PS: To others, it's just a smidgen over 1 gigabyte download.

The K-1 saves .MOV video files in the H.264 codec, how is you you have an .avi if it is an unedited sample Original camera codec, not reencoded in any way.?

EDIT: Tried three times to download the file from Dropbox, but it fails at about 65% each time.

EDIT#2: Got the file on fourth try.

Only RICOH knows.

Meanwhile, what's missing from the K-1 that makes you consider it to be an 'old' camera?

Noise Reductiion

Yet your bee was shot at ISO 640 which for a mid-afternoon shot seems rather high?
Soft result might be a quality of that budget Canon EF-S 55~250mm lens and camera settings.
I don't know much about Canons, the T5 is a low-end entry model. so I'd not expect too much IQ from this camera and lens combo..
At the end of the day, some digital grain is not a photo killer. Better to get the shot than to worry about a little noise. Most all film results have grain, I know my old film shots are all way grainier than any of my digital shots.

Do you shoot RAW?

---------- Post added 08-17-17 at 08:22 PM ----------

Not anything to worry about at all imho.

Yes it's smaller than APS-C but not by a huge amount, and it's nothing like p'n's tiny or the truly micro smartphone sensors.
Also I find that the aspect ratio is better for cropping. Switching to m43 a little over 18 months ago I have found my photography to be far more enjoyable with much nicer results. :)

Pentax Micro 4/3 cameras.

Actually the Pentax Auto 110 was an SLR, so it was more equivalent to the 'Four Thirds' cameras rather than 'Micro Four Thirds' which are so called because they are mirrorless and have a much shallower flange distance hence the smaller body possible on M43.
It was unfortunate that they coined 'micro' because so many people still today are put off by that thinking is refers to a tiny sensor, which of course it does not.
