went to set it to record and was a program on about a city hit by the tsunami - you saw the devastation when it happened but its sobering to realize that things are still bad and that a full or even partial recovery is still long way off - in this day and age you kinda expect that things should be fixed quickly, sadly not the case

So what happened to the K-3 ?

gotta admit i hope they have a k-3 to pull out at photokina as this k5 II is abit under whleming - its just a k5 with better low light autofocus - and i know many people wll disagree with me but i found the k5 fine - if i could see it through the viewfinder the camera autofocus could too and tahts about all i would ever expect from a camera

i mean come on even if they had give afew extra focus points would ahve made it abit more interesting - and the higher specd camera has the older processor in it where the k30 has the better one - thats wrong it should have had the prime m in it - at that i would have forgiven them for an incremental update

you know the thing i find annoying - the faster burst rate is in the camera with the smaller viewfinder - would love the k5n but after seeing the bit about new larger viewfinder well makes me want that too - ah well will be skipping this gen anyway k5 meets my needs and jsut my inner tech nerd wants latest shiney toy

Pentax full frame rumour

from the article i read it said it worked on a HUGE spectrum of light including the visable spectrum - there may be limitations but this is a new concept in focusing light and i dont think many people today can comment on where it will be in 5 or 10 years from now - perhaps you can layer them for different frequencies perhaps you can have multiple hmmm gold hm gates? on the lens so it focuses dfiferent frequencies in different places - and thats jsut 2 options i thought up in 2 seconds

“In the future we can potentially replace all the bulk components in the majority of optical systems with just flat surfaces,” https://www.seas.harvard.edu/news-events/press-releases/flat-lens-offers-perfect-image

ok maybe i'm being optomistic but to me cameras be it video or still are a fairly major part of optical systems

your missing the point i was making though - the limitations of current sensor technology mean larger is better - but that might not always be the case if there is a fundamental change in the technology - like i brought up earlier silicon/gold etched lenses is such a fundamental change - lenses with no distortion at all - no chromatic aberations - sure that before these new lens were made public most people would have considered that impossible

so i find it entirely possible that in the future a sensor might be developed that its size makes no impact on noise in high sensitivity or dynamic range - so claims about the laws of physics and how they apply to todays sensor technology might be completely bypassed by tomorrows technology

my statement about lytro was just an example of something different - and the super conducting sensor was just an example of a possible way to eliminate noise (now if they invent a room temp super conductor camera sensors will be a really minor change in the grand scheme)

now the nature of light itself certainly might impose some restrictions on what is possible even with noiseless sensors and perfect lenses but that is indeed an area that i am not upto speed and shall defer to you on - but with perfect lenses that weigh very little and noiseless sensor i would perfectly happy with aps c - actually i am happy with aps-c since the k-5 does everything i want from an image quality perspective - only area i care to see improved is autofocus tracking

well with current technology yes larger sensor is better generally - but if sensor technology changes where noise simply isn't an issue - say with some room temp super conducting sensor - then dof is likely the only gain - and then if you start down that lytro or whatever it was called camera - the light field one where you could do focus and dof after the image has been taken, then maybe small sensors will be superior - so yes the laws of physics wont change but the advantages of large sensors at the moment is only how those laws apply to current ccd and cmos sensor technology

talking about new technologies - anyone here care to speculate on the new silicon/gold lens technology (Harvard makes distortion-free lens from gold and silicon, aims for the perfect image (or signal) -- Engadget) that apparently makes glass lenses obsolete - no distortions - super thin - hear one site saying that you will get the same level of performance from a smart phone sized camera as a typical dslr today - i find this hard to believe - surely you will still need the large sensor for dof effects? thats ignouring the dynamic range and high iso benefits of large sensors

cant say i'm thrilled by 24mp - means will need a better computer to edit file in anything like real time - also gotta wonder about how many pictures it can take before the buffer is full too - but guess we will see in time

correct me if i'm wrong but if you get the same pixels from cropping ff as you do aps-c then your talking effectively the same sensor pixel density therefor you lose any manufacturing gains that will give you better dynamic range and noise performance - so if filling the frame isn't a advantage for aps-c then dynamic range and noise isn't an advantage for ff??

everyone goes on about the nikon 3200 but frankly other than the MP its still just a basic dslr and sorry but who other than profressional photographers who are planning on printing billboard sized images needs 24mp all that will do is make editing shots a freaking nightmare on anything but a beast of a computer - and those professional photographers aren't going to buy the 3200

now to ff and lenses - well got the ltd primes - personally i would think most pressing would be the 24-70mm f2.8 and a 70-200mm f2.8 those two lenses and the primes would make the system viable launch platform - and i belive several of the da lenses work on full frame too anyway - pretty sure i put my 60-250mm on old film camera body and was fine through out the entire zoom range - though i didn't actually take any pictures not seen a roll of film in years =)

All the talk of cropping FF images to give same as a aps-c - while its sort of true - there are major downsides to this approach!

First as someone else worked out this sensor i think produced a 10mp aps-c image - thats a loss of 6mp from my k5 - so less flexibility - cant crop a 10mp image nearly as much as a 16mp.

Ok you say sensor tech is moving on, soon we will have that 16mp crop no prob - sure but lets think about that - to achieve that that lets say it takes a 36mp sensor............your going to need to do more than upgrade your camera, my computer will object majorly when editing something like that - frankly it bogs down with 16mp images if i start adding to many layers in photoshop, so your looking at some horrible lag when dealing with such large image files. And aps-c sensors will also have increased pixel density too so the full frame sensor will never be able to get ahead of the game in any event.

Larger sensor means larger mirror that means (yes it means nicer viewfinder i know - but thats the only upside i see) more weight - more battery drain - and almost certainly larger body unless your going mirrorless and sorry evf's just aren't up there with optical ones yet.

Finally DOF, if you forget about cropping then for the same shot you need a greater focal length for FF this means less DOF, fine for portrait photographers but less handy for wildlife where you are already struggling with to little DOF - so FF isn't or everyone and hopefully Pentax/Ricoh wont force us down that path.

Now i'm not saying that we shouldn't have a FF option in the line up - i most certainly do think we should, but its for brand health rather than my own wants and needs, but i do worry that the best tech will end up in the full frame and leave us with crippled aps-c as in the nikon and canon line ups

K-01 problems!!

i do think the lack of a viewfinder was a mistake, the primary reason for buing this camera over other mirrorless cameras is the lens selection - but using larger and heavier lenses with the lcd without a tripod is basically impossible :( they should have announced a k-02 to go with it complete with viewfinder - or an addon viewfinder for use with the k-01, does anyon know know if there is provision for such a thing?

finally something in the 500-600mm range - shame its not da* though - but since its a prime might be a ltd instead whihc is good but weather sealing would be nice too but if its a ltd with wr then why not just call it da*?

still its a nice addition regardless

if ricoh wants to go toe to toe with canikon then by all means they should go for it - they have deeper pockets than probably both canon and nikon combined (might be aslight exageration but they certainly are bigger than canon)

as for mirrorless k-mount well - more of a lense issue than the registration distance - the sensor itself isn't that thick and if they used OLED screen (very thin) - then the issue is shake reduction, move it to the lens and you coul have a digital slr not much if any bigger than film era slrs, personally though i think the drive to make dslr's small is flawed, with large sensors your never gonna have smalll lenes so why worry abou shavig off a couple of mm here and there

the q serves those that a want small camera, a mirrorless k mount would be more about entry level camera being able to remove the cost of the mirror/mechanism and prism/mirror

i dont deny that its a nice camera but realistically its got a limited lens line up and that has to be a huge part of any informed buy into a interchangeble lens camera system, other than the retro styling for example what would attract buyers to this camera over the sony nex line - i dont see it having a huge effect on dslr camera sales, so i'm gonna oogle then move on and wait for some new lenses for k mount and maybe a new kick ass body

400mm f4 and 1.4 and 2x tc's and new camera that can reliably autofocus at f8 and pentax lens line up sorted (ok not for everyone but would be a big start and clear signal where ricoh planned on taking things)

realistically they have to keep the k mount - if it goes the pentax user base no longer has a tie to pentax cameras and are very likely to switch to canon or nikon. since ricoh wanted to increase their market share it would be rather stupiid to kill off the one thing that is holding customers to the brand they just purchased - specially since any product they released there after would still likely not match the top of the line canon and nikon products and certainly have nothing like the lense selection

until a camera's sensor and lcd screen can match the dynmaic range of the human eye i dont want to go near them - sure some people like the wysiwyg of cd screens but i'd rather see whats there and then work on getting the camera to do the same in the photo
