I think there is also some accumulation of noise with very long shutter times, but the biggest factor is ISO speed.

A fast prime is very high on my list, esp. after shooting a bit with the 1.4 on the Canon...

Yes, I intend to bring my tripod.
And the 50mm f1.4 lens on the Canon is rather fast.
So I've got to decide wether I want long (70-300) or short (18-55) focal distance.

Don't worry, it can happen. At least it happens to me, too.
Sometimes I just find (or think) that there's nothing inspiring to shoot that I haven't photographed a dozen times already.
In that case I just ignore photography for a while (it's just a hobby for me, no profession) until either inspiration comes back or something happens that presents new opportunities, like travelling, some event in town, etc.
Forcing myself to take pictures usually doesn't result in something worthwhile, but that's just me, it may work for you.
What can also work, but is a potentially dangerous advice, is to buy some equipment that gives you new possibilities. After I had bought my last lens, which also included a macro-setting, I spend hours taking pictures of flowers and insects. It's nothing revolutionary or exceptionally creative, but I had a lot of fun doing it.

Hello!
I could use some small advice regarding which objectives to choose.
Some friends asked me to take some pictures of their wedding ceremony this weekend.
I'll not be responsible for the "official" photo-session, it's just about taking some pics in church.
The idea is that I'll be shooting with two cameras, a Canon (booh! ;) ) DSLR I borrowed from them, on which I'll most probably be using a very nice 50mm f1.4 lens and my own Pentax K200 to which I currently own the kit objective (18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL II) and a Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG.
At first I was going to use the telezoom objective on my Pentax, but I'm concerned about the available light and furthermore I wouldn't have anything for wide angles.
Now I could just bring the kit lens, but I wanted to avoid changing lenses during the ceremony.
Unfortunately the only flash (except from built-in) is also on the Canon. So far I never did much photography that would warrant buying one for myself.
Excluding lending anything (time's probably too short now), my choice is between the 18-55 (better for wide-angles and lower aperture) and the 70-300 (nice for zooming in, but will I get good pics considering the comparably low amount of light?).
What do you think?

When I started photography I visited a basic course at the university I went to at the time.
The guy who teached it always said "If you are not sure if you should keep it, most of the time you can throw it away".
While I think he's right, I still keep much more than I would like...

Besides, being curious I would love to see some of your photos that drew comments from other people, would you like to show some?

Thanks!
I have to give some credit to my girlfriend though, as she showed me the rose in the first place - I was happily shooting away at other stuff.

Forgive me if that sounds stupid, but you did look at the uploaded pics on the same monitor, did you?
(E.g. you uploaded them at your home but then opened your flickr page at work or on the pc of some friend)
Other than that, I guess Flickr is altering the fotos, but I always thought it would be only resizing.

I know two other people that are using a Pentax.
Considering that I do not know that many people that are using DSLRs its not a bad cut.

Ironically, I have already desaturated the bg a bit, so the layer mask is already there ;) - will try it when I'm at home.

Took this in Munich this weekend.
Afterwards I regretted that I didn't shoot 1 or 2 more and in RAW, too.
I cropped it and did some minor PP in GIMP.
Hope you enjoy it! |

I especially like #3!
Personally, I would tune down saturation a bit.

The first couple of "extreme" HDR pictures I saw, I was like "wow, what a stunning picture".
However, after the novelty had worn off, I felt that it usually looks to fake for my taste.
Therefore I mostly prefer the more natural looking HDR pictures.
When I try to make one of my own, I try to get a natural or only slightly painting-like look most of the time.

I am. ;)
No idea though how aussies pronounce damn. Outside of regional differences I think you will sound somewhat right following my example for the "ä"
You're right about ERror, had trouble finding a good example.
Intuitively I would pronounce the g.

You can never be 100% sure with names, but as it is written Voigtländer (note the a-umlaut ä) it should be pronounced voigt-land-er with the a somewhere between land/and/hand and lend and -er as elder.
Btw. wouldn't it be technically ASA 1600 (now, is this A.S.A, asa...) as ISO would be ISO 1600/33°, or can you in fact leave the second part out according to ISO 5800? :P

Canon.
Is it pronounced like cannon or more like in car?

Well, guess I'll be using PPL or RawTherapee then.
There was only one update to 12.01 which I already had installed.
As I said I got PSP from my university, which right now is only offering X2.
However I hope that they'll upgrade to the new X3 eventually.
Ironically I tried PSP because I had trouble getting my Wacom tablet to work with the Gimp in Win 7 64bit.
After a bit tinkering, the tablet is now working great in the Gimp but not in PSP (can't get the eraser to work). :D
Still, the software offers some nice tools so I guess it'll stay on my HDD for now.

Hello!
I recently acquired Paintshop Pro X2 (turns out I can get it for free from my university).
I played around a bit but so far have been unable to import any .pef raw files from my K200 (it just refuses to open them even if .pef is one of the supported filetypes in the dialog).
Has anyone any experience with the raw support of PSP?
Would changing the raw format of the K200 help?

On a certain level you could argue that photography is always changing, or at least bending the truth.
The moment you choose to take a picture of a part of your surroundings, you already steer the viewer's perception in some direction defined by yourself.
Usually a picture shows only a small aspect of "truth" or reality, without the necessary context to "get the whole picture".
This, in my opinion, makes it hard sometimes to define when editing or post production have been taken too far.
Anyway, whether you do copious editing of your pictures or not it will still be photography, only with different intentions.

At least for the K200 they did use a "proper" battery - there was a pack of lithiums included, which do last very long - but aren't rechargeable. ;)
The manual states that high power rechargeables should be used (2700mAh+) but indeed it would have been nice if there would be a recommendation for low-discharge batteries in the manual.
I would say that both (lithium and low-self-discharge) are readily available so I still think it is an advantage not being restricted to a special kind of OEM battery pack, especially as they will work "out of the box".
