There's room for 156 RAW files on the card when I'm in user mode. Tried another card where I had room for 400+.

I always shoot in RAW as my default. Recently, though, the only way I can shoot RAW is in USER mode, and I have to press the RAW button to get it. In any other mode, the default is JPG, and pressing the RAW button does not even make a beep.
When I press the MENU button, the File Format option is grayed out and reading JPG.
Ideas?

I use the center point focus option on my K20D, I wait for the green hexagon and the beep, and then I recompose. I have been shooting like this for some time with no problems, but last time I got out my camera, when I recompose, it beeps and the green hexagon beeps and it refocuses where I don't want it to. This problem I'm having happens when pressing shutter halfway or having my thumb on AF. Maybe I accidentally changed a setting? Any tips? Thanks.

Turns out the red light goes on when you put it in remote mode. Actually I remembered a few months ago I'd let the remote go through the wash in my jeans pocket (didn't go through dryer). It worked after that, but I guess I should have not assumed no water got in. I opened it up, cleaned corrosion off with vinegar, and bought a new battery ($5). It works. Thanks for responses.

My remote control will not make my K20D fire. I have it set to remote control in the drive mode. I halfway depress the shutter on my camera to focus and make sure it's in shooting mode, not playback mode, but when I hit the button on the remote, a red light flashes both on the front of the camera and also the red light to the left of the back AF button. I believe after several attempts, I was able to make it fire once, but I'm not sure what caused it. This was setting up a family photo and I was pointing the remote right at the camera, not from a funny angle. We ended up having someone else press the shutter, but in my more recent attempts to play with it, I still can't make it fire.
I guess since the remote is making the red light on the camera blink, at least that means it's sending some sort of signal. Do I need a new battery in the remote?

Looking at p. 99 of my manual for my K20D and trying to understand better about spot metering. . .
It says here in the Custom Setting menu, you can choose OFF or ON (OFF is default).
OFF means exposure is set separately form AF point in multi-segment metering.
ON means exposure is set in accordance with AF point.
I'm not sure I understand how this would play out in a practical example. Which do you use, and why? Thanks.

To expand on the setting to manual question, here is what someone who uses Nikon D300/700 says:
"There is usually a tab on the lens to adjust the F-stop/Ap manually (mine has an orange mark) you have to flip that off. You'll need to turn it back to the original setting to lock it again when you're done. You'll have to manually change it there."

Thanks, everyone for sharing what you like. I will maybe be investigating those options in the future, but I am going to start with the simplest, cheapest option and go from there. I decided to order a reversal/reversing ring, which set me back just under $9 including shipping. I understand focusing will involve me physically moving forwards/backwards. But it is a very compact option, which I like.
Marc, sorry, I wasn't clear. When I said "beyond simply putting in manual mode," I meant that the Nikon D300/700 user's instructions involved two steps 1) setting to manual on camera 2) setting ap to manual on lens as well.
I am still interested in learning the true poor man's method of simply holding the lens backward. When I do this, I have my camera on manual and f/2.8, I see black through the viewfinder (and in viewfinder it blinks at me F--). I hope I don't have the same problem when I use the reversal ring.

Has anyone played around with the poor man's macro technique? What accessories, if any, do you use?
For those who might not know, a poor man's macro is to take off your lens, and attach it with an accessory or just simply hold it in front of your camera body backwards.
I was reading on another forum that a Nikon D300 and D700 user just holds it on. Also there is a way beyond simply putting your camera in manual mode that allows you to switch the aperture to manual. I don't know what this would be on my K20D.

Here is an example. I cropped so the ID bracelet doesn't show, per agreement with this mom.
Next time there will be another doula (I was also the doula, ie labor support for the mom in this photo) so I will be able to pay more attention to settings on my camera.

I am new to post processing. I have not decided what, if any post processing software to purchase.
I shot a birth in a hospital (no flash) where I fixed the shutter speed at 1/90. I let the camera pick the ISO within a range, and also let the camera pick the aperture. It picked 2.8 (the widest on my lens) most of the time. The ISO could have been higher. The problem is that the depth of field is so shallow that there are parts of the subject that are blurred that I would like in focus. Can this be fixed in post processing? How difficult is it?
I will shoot a birth in a hospital soon under similar lighting conditions. I am thinking of letting the ISO range be higher and fixing the aperture at 4.5. If I do this, can I make the ISO lower in post processing to let it be less grainy?
I shot in RAW.

I used to have a fully manual film camera, then p&s digital, but recently got my first DSLR (K20D). So I have a handle on the basics of photography and used to develop film, but know nothing about digital post processing.
What post processing software do you use, or do you think I might like, and why? Is there a big learning curve on the software that comes with my camera since that seems like a logical place to start.
How did you learn to use it? Was the manual sufficient?

Thanks for the input. I googled "consumer protection" and "defective product" and just came up with a bunch of links to lawyers. I also googled some of the terms you mentioned and came up with UK sites. I saw a chart comparing, and it seems that maybe UK consumer protection laws are stronger than US.
I contacted the online camera store; they were sympathetic, but said they were powerless to change the policy per their agreement with Pentax. . .since I was over (well over) the 2 week or so return policy. They said about 1.8% of cameras of any brand are defective.
I politely contacted Pentax regarding extending my warranty for the time I'd be without my camera, and they said they "don't do that" and acted rude and as if that were an unreasonable request.
I guess I will just take my lumps and hope I get my camera back quickly.
Weighing pros/cons of getting a battery before sending camera off. . . .

In response to the questions, I am not using LV or flash.
The auto-off is on the default setting.
I would think that if somehow I were using up a lot of batteries that the indicator would show the battery being depleted.
I called Pentax and gave Allistair's theory, and asked if they could send me a new battery to try, but they think that there's a short in the camera.
I'm disappointed that Pentax is not planning to cover my costs to ship/insure. I wonder if they will extend warranty, at least for period that I'm without camera.
I have the opportunity to photograph the birth of a friend this month. Now I will not have a suitable camera to use for the low light conditions. This is my first DSLR. My Nikon FM2 was stolen from my parents' house.
Do you think it would be better for me to send the camera to the Pentax service center (no online reviews) in AZ for repair (3 weeks turnaround not incl shipping), or to another one in CT that is closer to me and says they have a 7-10 biz day turnaround? I viewed the reviews on google, and they are mixed. Although fast turnaround would be nice, it's possible that the baby will come in the next week or so, so where I send it could be moot.

I have it on the green/auto or P mode most of the time. In addition to having the long shots, it basically loses power and I can't do a thing with it until I recharge the battery.

I bought a new K20D ~1.5 months ago. I had a busy few weeks and didn't use it for a week or two. Every time since then, or nearly every time, about 30 min or so after I've been shooting, it is as if the camera is losing power (despite battery indicator showing full charge) the shutter seems to take a full second to turn over despite daylight conditions, replay of image cannot be viewed, and soon I have no camera function. However, I still see how many shots are left on my mem card when power is off. Then I charge the battery, and everything is fine the next time I use the camera--for 30 min or so.
I am using two older SD cards that I should replace since they're is only 1-2 G. I tend to leave the power on while I hike or do whatever. Is this bad? Before I started having problems with the camera, the battery power indicator would show battery power going away as it should.
The first time this happened, I called Pentax. They told me to send it in. I would like to avoid the expense, hassle, and incovenience of being without my camera.
Do I have a bum battery, or what?
