See that thread and the explanations of westmill wich is a Nikon and Pentax user.

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-k-5/177572-all-fuss-about-auto-focus-point-size.html

Keep in mind that AF area sensors are bigger than red squares wich are only indicators of area sensors selected. Focus is made on the more contrasted object in the area sensor selected, may be out of the red square. There is no problem with enough big DOF. With shallow DOF recommandation is to use Liveview with magnification,

AF sensor arrays are indicated by the green and blue lines. Focus is made on the more contrasted object detected by a sensor array. Choose a secure DOF or use Liveview for an ultra precise focus.

Some insight into flash overexposure

It's ok with fixed ISO.
With ISO AUTO the K5 sets highest Iso for ambient light. But the minimal distance is generally too far so all objects before this minimal distance are burned.

With my AF 540 i proceed like that :
- mode M
- Iso 400 or 800 max for ambient light

- sets aperture for the minimal distance (flash head at 90°, see the range illumination)
- then i control exposure with shutter speed : -1 to -2IL to have ambient light slightly underexposed and subject well exposed with TTL flash.
- then i use the reflector with head nearly vertical (or hold the flash in wireless mode)

AF area size is bigger than little red square wich is only a visual indicator of the AF area selected.

If several objects are in an AF area, focus is made on any object detected by the cross type AF sensor of the area. So focus may vary between two consecutive shots if there is some movement of the objects in the AF area selected. It's good to keep in mind. To get good focus, take care of complex subjects, for them select a secure Aperture with large DOF or try Liveview.

What picture settings do you prefer on the K-5 ?

My settings for JPEGs (no PP)

- Bright with fine sharpness +1
- AWB with A2 correction for a slightly warmer cast

I take more JPEGs with the K5 than with older DSLRs.
By exception (2 to 5%), i save RAW file (AE-L) then PP with Silkypix Professionnal V5.

Blue cast in bright sunlight with AWB

Try to set A2 or A3 correction to the AWB for a warmer color cast.

To set AWB correction press WB button on the pad, then right to enter AWB correction menu. Then press right 2 or 3 times to set A2 or A3 correction. Terminate with OK 2 times.

With A3 AWB correction, colors are the same as with sunlight WB.

I don't have any problem with my K5 and AF 540FGZ with a few precautions.

Most important :

- don't use ISO AUTO with large range : K5 will have the trend to preserve ambiance and set High ISO.
- be careful with minimum distance and high ISOs. Remember that all objects before the minimum distance are burnt. This is not an error. Indoors, with high ISO the guide number is too high and the minimum distance is generally too far, then all objects wil be burnt. So, set ISO manually within a range as 100-800, not above.

- Min.distance = 1/10 Max. distance.
- Max distance = NG / Aperture at ISO 100 ( x 2 at ISO 400)

It's good to verify minimum and maximum distances wich are are displayed on the LCD at the rear of the cobra flash (before bouncing).

Hello !

Il also confirmed AF is snappier. I've made a lot of tests with a focus test chart and these lenses : DA 35mm F2,4, DA 70mm Ltd, DA 55-300mm and Sigma 17-70 F2,8-4,5

Before 1.13 i had to set fine AF corrections (+3 with DA 35mm, +5 with 55-300mm, ...).

With 1.13 focus is very fast and accurate with fine AF correction OFF. (and with normal or low light)

Firmware v1.12.23.20

Same for me with my K5 and 3 lenses.
I set M (manual exposure) mode so this is P-TTL wich drives flash power. With firmware 1.03 i had to reduce flash power (-1 to -2) with bounce flash. Now, with v1.12 i don't have to reduce flash power when bouncing flash.

I have made successfull tests with 3 lenses : DA 35mm F2,4, DA 70mm F2,4 Limited and Sigma 17-70mm F2,8-4,5

Exposure parameters : multi-segment metering, Mode M, 1/180s, F5,6, ISO 100

1. I determine the minimum distance of the subject with direct flash (range displayed on LCD). It's about 3m.
2. I put the subject at 4m beyond the minimum distance (all the objects before the minimum distance will be normally overexposed).
3. I take three photos, one with direct flash, the other with flash bounced toward the ceiling and another toward a wall (white wall and ceiling)

Prior the v1.12 firmware upgrade i had to reduce flash power with bounce flash. Now it's good. No overexosure with bounce flash. I observe an attenuation of the brightness with bounce flash when i compare to direct flash.

It seems like the K5 P-TTL was asking full power to the bounced flash prior the v1.12 firmware. Now power flash seems to be the same level for bounce and direct flash.

For your case i think overexposure of the subject at 2m is not anormal with the K5 because it is before the minimal flash distance range. Perhaps the K20D had a better result at 2m because its trend to preserve hilights. (prior the K5 i had a K20D)

I have made many tests and i confirm the correction of the overexposure with bounce flash after upgrade from V1.03 to V1.12 (K5 + AF 540 FGZ P-TTL).

Before V1.12 i had to reduce flash power between -1 and -2 with bounce flash (no correction when used directly)..

With v1.12 applied exposure is good with flash bounced. There is a slight exposure attenuation when i compare to direct flash. That's seems normal behavoir.

The problem with auto selection of too high ISO is that the flash guide number increases and minimium distance increases too.

If subject is positionned before the minimum distance then it is burned.

High auto ISO with flash is available in large rooms (sports).

For portrait, you will have better results with low ISO : the background will be darker (lower Guide Number). Manual setting of ISO (and aperture) will give you the capacity to control the background ambiance, lighter or darker. Remember the relation between ISO and Guide number. It's a key to make great photos with flash.

With my K5 and AF 540FGZ i have great results for portraits inside with the flash oriented vertically and with the white reflector.

I found 4 stains on the sensor of my K5 after 3 days of use. I blew on the sensor and these spots have disappeared (no trace in dust alert, no trace at F22).

Today I found 2 spots present near the center.

But these new stains are persistent. Impossible to remove with cleaning function.

The problem is troublesome because these stains are located near the center and are visible even at F11 and F8.

I have contacted my vendor for service.

Mine is 3832...

I love my K5 and I hope this problem will be solved soon
