change file naming prefix: is it possible at all?

Just realized I needed to figure out how to do this, too - I have four Pentax bodies, I often copy files from more than one body into one folder. Haven't had any "collisions" yet but I've suddenly realized it's possible.

Kx colours

Check out eBay. There are a lot of Kx, Kr, K30, K50 etc. bodies and lenses in many colors available, most of these are shipping from Japan. I've got a white Kx (I even bought a lens hood for the lens and applied white vinyl decal to it.. ), and will soon be receiving a purple one in the mail (which was shipping from the US). From what I understand, there were 90+ color combos available in Japan. Only seen one of the Korejanairobo Kx on sale, though - the price was exorbitant, as you'd imagine. My next camera body will probably be a K30 or K50 in some color or another.

By the way, I came across the 35mm f2.4 DAL lens in blue. And then I found this picture in the lens reviews:

I wonder what other lenses come with color options.

Oh.. the Korejanairobo Kx:

Pentax Full Frame - An official statement from Pentax (they listened!)

Bah, humbug. A full frame dSLR will be huge and cost a ton of money, no matter who makes it. Not for me, I'm afraid.

Somewhat ironic about Ricoh "taking over " Pentax - in the early 80s I was in the market for a SLR, and quickly decided I wanted a K-Mount. Looking at all the features, I eventually went with a Ricoh XR2s. It had everything I could get in a K-mount SLR at the time, far more than the then top-of-the-line Pentax ME Super (at the expense of added bulk, of course) AND was quite a few dollars cheaper. Nice build quality, too. Used it for years. Bought a Pentax 50/1.4 to go with it later. Only started buying Pentax bodies years later when cheap used MEs and ME Supers started becoming available.

Did I just downgrade to K100D Super, or actually upgrade?

In one area the K100D Super (and the earlier 6MP cameras) outshines all later models, including the K10D. Infrared shooting with the Hoya R72 filter. In bright sunshine, you can shoot at f11 or f8 at about 1/4-1/2 sec. A K10D requires FOUR MORE STOPS!!!

I'm keeping mine, even though I also have a K200D (and might get others later).

Here's what you should expect from the K-x

From what I've heard, this is indeed what exists - there's some "secret menu" you can get into (the steps to get in have been "outed" for the K10D, but not for the others) where you can, among other things, adjust the individual correct focus for each and every lens you have. The lenses have chips in them that lets the camera tell what lens is attached.

Never done it myself, mind you. And this is all based on hearsay, so no flames, please. Correct me if this is wrong.

Don't know about 1200, but I was getting between 800 and 900 with my K100D Super.

K-x and CR-V3 batteries?

Careful. There is the CR-V3 primary (i.e. non-rechargable) lithium battery, which is nothing more than two AA lithiums in one supposedly-more-convenient case (and which costs quite a bit more than two AAs..). This one has a voltage of 3.0V and is approved for use with Pentax dSLRs. In fact, I've heard the cameras were designed for them.

Then there's the RCR-V3, which is a lithium ion cell packaged like a CR-V3. These put out 3.7 volts. Pentax recommends these NOT be used (though you hear of people using them with no problems). Some are said to have a "voltage regulator" in the packaging, but I really wonder about that. Linear voltage regulators get hot, because they're soaking up the difference in voltage and converting it to heat.

One nice thing about the 6MP Pentaxes is that they work very well with the Hoya R72 infrared filters. I can shoot at about 1/4-1/2 second at f8 in bright sunlight with my K100D Super. A K10D or any of the newer cameras would require far longer exposures - another 4 stops for a K10D. Some other cameras require even longer - I've heard the Sony A200 needs 20-40 seconds under the same conditions.

So if you own a 6MP Pentax, hold on to it, just for this.

Upgrade path from K200D ?

I'd read somewhere that Olympus lenses are limited to f2.0 due to some design flaw with the lens mount. Don't know if it's true or not, I haven't spent the time checking.

How much more is this compared to a run-of-the-mill Kx?

My only experience with Sony was the A200 we looked at some time back when looking for a camera for the paleo lab, for dedicated macro use. Compared to the Km, the viewfinder was small and dark, which turned me off. Their higher end bodies might be better.

I was pushing for a K200D for the lab, the problem was, there were none! Absolutely none, when there were a few on the shelves maybe three months before that. This was last June. I think they ended up buying a Canon.

K200D Battery Meter Problem

Very, very interesting thread, indeed. There has been talk elsewhere about a number of Kx's with this very same problem.

One wonders what the tolerances are for the battery-flat-o-meter - I suspect I have a K200D in which the cutoff voltage is a little too high. It works great once the batteries have warmed up a little (i.e. 20-30 shots), before that it'll show half charge, and once in a while, will actually shut down. I also wonder if this is user-settable via secret menu or if you actually have to physically tweak a potentiometer somewhere in the camera body.

I've heard it said elsewhere (can't remember where) that the cameras were not really designed for NiMH cells, but for the 1.5 volt lithium primary cells made by Energizer. (Incidentally, CR-V3 primary lithiums are just two AA cells packaged as one - no need to buy them since they cost far more than two AA cells.) The lithiums give faster focusing, among other things, due to their 1.5 volts (rather than the nominal 1.2 of the NiMH cells). The battery-flat-o-meter would work well with them.

I wish I could get a set of the new Ni-Zn cells - their voltage is 1.6 fully charged, they might give the same benefits of the Li cells (and you can recharge them). They're on Amazon, but shipping here would cost an arm and a leg, and I'd rather have my arm and leg.

Any word on Pentax's official line on these? They warn against using RCR-V3s (these are 3.7 volts, while the primary lithium CR-V3s are 3.0).

The difference, of course, is that, when the Li-Ion goes dead, you can't be sure you'll be able to find a replacement in the same form factor. Nor will you be sure you'll be able to find a replacement charger.

Mind you, "a few years" is an age when it comes to digital cameras - the way things go, they're obsolete (or at least, undesirable) in as little as two years! (Which makes the battery obsolescence problem moot, OR worse, depending on whether you wish to continue using the camera past its obsolescence date...)

I'm a K200D user myself, I like the weather sealing (I've had it out in torrential thunderstorms - I wish my old Ricoh XR2s were weather sealed - it quit working after a Maid of the Mist trip at Niagara Falls, the motel owner's wife's hairdryer did manage to rescue it..). I am kind of resigned to the idea that Pentax will never produce another weather-sealed entry level dSLR - the writing was on the wall when the Km came out. The Kx would be a great replacement camera if only it were weather sealed, and the K7 would be if only it were a bit cheaper (give it 12 months! It WILL be cheaper..) AND used AAs.

On another note - my K200D does have a strange quirk. A freshly charged set of Eneloops shows full charge. After a week it shows HALF charge. Once in a while when I'm out shooting, I turn the camera on, and it says almost NO charge. Then it'll turn off after 2-3 shots. Turn it off and on again, it'll show HALF charge, and will let me keep shooting. After 10-20 shots, though, the batteries will be somewhat warm, and it shows FULL charge. And then no problems until hundreds of shots later when the batteries are finally flat. The same set shows full charge on my K100D Super. It's probably a calibration problem with the camera's battery-flat-o-meter - some potentiometer inside the body needs to be tweaked. NiMH cells have a very flat discharge curve, which makes "half charge" seem to last forever. I've read of some Kx's having the same problem.

I'm wondering if the new Ni-Zn cells will solve this. They're 1.6 volts, more like the Li cells that come with the cameras. Check the specs, though - they're actually only 1500 mAH (the battery packet says 2500 mWH - all in the name of marketing.. Eneloops by the same measure would be 2400 mWH).
