It also wouldn't surprise me if someone's inline comments in a Word document got into the English text that was distributed.

handing down my *istDS

Hello, everyone. I thought I'd drop in to PF, where I was active a decade ago, to pass along my news about the longevity of Pentax's DSLR's. My *istDS, which I bought around 2006, is still running. After 29,000 frames, I set it aside two years ago. This week, it occurred to me to pass it along to my 9 1/2 year old son as we head out on vacation.

Just as my father handed me his old Minolta SRT-101 that was older than I was when I was 18.

I don't think I ever considered the longevity of the DS when I bought it. Well done, Pentax.

Long live the film SLR. The last true SLR's before they evolved into video-capable computers with lousy interfaces and tiny viewfinders. Increasingly unattractive...

And I suppose in today's bells and whistles market, a compact FF DSLR model based on a CCD w/o video or live view would have to have that red dot to sell....

Facts about the Pentax brand name under Ricoh

No it isn't. Not sure where you get that idea, but don't confuse patience and dedication with some sort of subjugation of the self. When the Japanese self-identify with their employer or their University is it really different from Americans (et al) identifying themselves with brands?

You might as well sum up the West by saying, "For them, it's gratification first, arguing about everything second, and family last." When I left Tokyo there was a magazine in publication called "WIFM" - "what's in it for me". It was, of course, an Anglophone-oriented magazine.

Pentax EVIL NC-1 has smaller sensor than APS-C - your opinion?

I don't see the target market, Eddie. If it's domestic, I think that it's a non-starter: the mobile phone is a much larger part of life in Japan than it is in the West. Email, sharing photos, using Mixi on your phone, these all require the presence of .. the phone. Home PC's were never as big in Japan as they got here, and they've been steadily waning for years. Meanwhile, you can't see anything worth looking at in that country without someone at hand taking a photo with a mobile phone.

I don't think that anything that sails this close to the mobile phone image quality offers any utility that the mobile phone doesn't. Just to come up to par with the sharing capability of a mobile phone, Hoya would have to offer dead-simple integration with email and the proprietary Internet systems of the carriers, which would require an add-on service for each carrier to be interested. And that's just to match the utility of the mobile phone's similarly-sized sensor.

At the other end of the spectrum, Japanese women have no trouble using DSLR's.

Back in the Auto 110 days there was nothing like the mobile phone (an imaging device that people carried every day anyway) to compete with. I think the time for a small odd-ball like this is well past.

Same here.

The more I read on this forum recently, the more I see people framing their interests in terms of solutions from other brands.

To return to "K-3 speculation", I have to wonder if there even will be a K-3.

You'll be fine as long as you're not bringing anyone << 5 years old. From what friends in Tokyo are telling me, the tourist scene is *dead* so you won't have to wade through the usual crowds and you might be able to wangle a bargain on a hotel room.

My former business partner is moving to Kyoto from Tokyo because they do in fact have an <1 year old child and the city's been so disruptive (people not being able to reliably get diapers etc). None of this should be of concern for someone travelling there for a matter of days.

Also, be prepared for warmer weather than we're having in Toronto! 8^)

My friend if you can find me a market for them, I can round up dozens and dozens of the things from the used stores here in Tokyo. They're not cheap, but they're always in stock. By contrast, I can recall having seen two affixed to people's cameras in the five years I've lived here.

Still using an *istDS?

Think the *istDS is an antique and outclassed by modern rivals? I wonder if the PentaxForums populace can spot the pics shot with an *istDS from those in the poll below. Note that there are two entrants, for a total of eight frames.

(The poll is to chose a cover for a book shot by fifteen PF-goers.)

@Jools .. he glued a molar back in? Ah, ya!

@Duh_Vinci, I hope you've got a relatively cool issuer. I've had my card stolen by a pickpocket and he turned it over to his pals to run up the costs before I could get to a phone. The issuer just made everything go away.

Anyway, my portrait's up. Better get back to studying Japanese. And by "back to" I mean "started".

I've read one criticism that Sony is a big subscriber to the "not invented here" mentality. I suspect that part of their initial failure to make a splash in the market (and theirs subsequent move to a new mount) are in part their refusal to run with what they picked up from Minolta.

With popular APS-C cameras to sell in sufficient numbers to pay the bills for the time being...

Heh heh. One problem with that logic .. have you been to Japan? Do you know how these guys blow off steam? Entertaining Japanese businessmen is a big industry both in Japan and overseas.
