PENTAXIANS MONO - 500 pages of finest monochrome photography

The work in here is very compelling. I have to say, the quality of the images is considerably better than in some of the early reviews. I didn't see the expected resolution and fineness of gradation that I expected in those early shots but they come through in spades, here. Thanks for sharing, I know how much work these volumes can be!

(P.S. I'm very pleased to see that this community is still producing photo books. I think the first one must have been around 2009?)

It also wouldn't surprise me if someone's inline comments in a Word document got into the English text that was distributed.

handing down my *istDS

Hello, everyone. I thought I'd drop in to PF, where I was active a decade ago, to pass along my news about the longevity of Pentax's DSLR's. My *istDS, which I bought around 2006, is still running. After 29,000 frames, I set it aside two years ago. This week, it occurred to me to pass it along to my 9 1/2 year old son as we head out on vacation.

Just as my father handed me his old Minolta SRT-101 that was older than I was when I was 18.

I don't think I ever considered the longevity of the DS when I bought it. Well done, Pentax.

Hello, I'm a recipient of the mass-mailing. Congrats on yours, panoguy! I'm also dealing with a newborn (May 1) and won't be able to attend.

Thanks for the invite nonetheless. I seem to have dropped out of Pentaxforums six months ago or more during a busy period and essentially haven't gotten unbusy since. I will add though that that K30 looks like a winner. If they'd released that in '08 or '09 when I was still earning investment bank money I'd have bought one.

A good friend of mine used to tell me various tricks of selling TV's. At his shop they'd see to it that only the set with the top commission in each bracket would be properly tuned; all the others they'd subtly screw up to make the high commission unit stand out.

Hmm. Maybe Fuji will take the retro ball and run with it into DSLR land.

Hear, hear. Just cos it's not flashy doesn't mean there's not an amazing amount of work to be done. Ricoh doesn't even sell cameras in Canada at present.

And I suppose in today's bells and whistles market, a compact FF DSLR model based on a CCD w/o video or live view would have to have that red dot to sell....

It's the same in Japan. Every Japanese incorporated company has to make public a statement about the paid-in capital. That $1M likely means when the incorporated company was set up its creators put $1M into a bank account. Or possibly pulled a stunt likely transferring in $1M in unrealized obligations to a shareholder, etc.

That's where I was leading the question. I saw an OM-1 for sale for $75 (with a lens) on the weekend, and thought, "Surely this form of DSLR can be done in digital?" But then I realized that it would only generate outrage at all of the missing features "What, only 50 AF points? They use *what* codec for video??"

Welcome to Japan. A discussion you'll found readily taken up by anyone who's worked there or tried to start a business there. 8^)

So you don't think much of the rumour of a $2000 "FF" Canon coming in ~15 months?

I think it's interesting that the mirrorless bodies have exploded in Japan but not in other markets. Maybe it's the onset of a long-term difference in tastes - like way full bodied SUV's are everywhere to be seen in N. America while (tall-body) subcompacts & now hybrids rule Japan.

What you're describing looks an awful lot like Nikon (plus some primes). I think Ricoh's demonstrated more creativity than Nikon, and hope that that continues. Variations on the GXR theme, or something like the rumoured µ43 version of the L1 show better innovation, to my mind.

As for producing yet another MILC that's between the Q and the entry K bodies, I don't see the point. See, for instance, this post and the comments.

Sure! Aside from the collapsing mount idea, which just seems like trouble. What I have in mind is a APS-C MILC similar to the Panasonic L1. APS-C requires large lenses, why shrink the body beyond current entry DSLR size?

Not sure the connection you're making, but I note that the 4/3 SLR's had optical viewfinders (which were even worse than the APS-C pentamirror viewfinders, which, IMHO, are a major disincentive).

Why not? Replace the pentamirror with an (ever-improving) EVF placed neatly in one corner and you've got quite a usable form factor with an improved viewfinder. It's bigger than the Sonys and Samsung units, but: it will certainly be distinguished from the Q, the GXR, the Sonys, and the Samsung lines.

This is lunacy. Cross the channel and the product devalues by 15%. Cross the Atlantic and it drops by 35%. It's the equivalent of £147 in Japan.

Maybe they have no interest in selling this model to foreign markets?
