Re-introductions from Brisbane, Australia

I spend a fair chunk of time helping out with animals at our local shelter. Here are some of my recent photos of some animals from there and one of my "foster fails". With the cats, I struggle with the lighting in the room.

Hi all,

As the title implies, I am not actually a new member, but it's been 9 years since my last post so I thought that was a long enough gap to re-introduce myself.

My gear has been a little under used, particularly the last couple of years, but I have been using it a bit more recently (so far mostly just taking some photos of animals (mostly cats & dogs) from the shelter that I volunteer at or ones that we are fostering. Using my gear again has brought that itch back so I thought I would also try post on here to help keep me engaged.

I still have my Pentax K-x and K-5 - I'm impressed at how well they still hold up and I think it's a real testament to the value of quality glass.

Well I'm looking forward to being around here a little bit more again!

Pentax Lens Prices

I agree with a lot of the reasons already posted. The most obvious thing that popped into my mind was 'normal' inflation. On top of this, I expect (though I have done no research and thus have no evidence to support this) is the growth in the number of Pentax (D)SLR owners. This would surely have an impact on the prices of out-of-production lenses.

Great, thanks all. Found a few more on Flickr too - I don't know why I didn't think of doing a search on there earlier.

I have a fairly simple (lens porn) request that hopefully someone out there can help me out with. I have seen plenty of shots of silver lenses (DA & FA) on silver bodies, however I have never seen an image of a silver lens on a black body but would love to see how it looks. I have had a pretty extensive search of this site, google images and other pentax sites without success. Could someone post some images of silver limited lenses on an all black body please?

I'm getting more confused. SDM is a trademark designation for lenses driven by a supersonic motor and you say that Pentax has no ultrasonic motors, yet the K-5 manual talks about "DA lenses with an ultrasonic motor".

Don't both "supersonic" and "ultrasonic" just refer to soundwaves with a frequency above the human hearing range? So SDM lenses, driven by supersonic motors are by definition driven by ultrasonic motors, surely?

So I got into a bit of a discussion (in the marketplace section of all places) about DC versus SDM. It probably wasn't the best place to be debating the difference so I thought I'd ask some more questions about the differences here instead.

So it is my understanding that the trademark for the SDM designation for lenses refers to lenses driven with a supersonic motor. And the DC in the name of the DA 18-135mm lens refers to a direct current motor.

Yet Pentax, in the media release about the DA 18-135mm describes the lens as:
"3. Extra-smooth SDM autofocus operation
A DC motor built into the lens’ AF (autofocus) unit assures extra-smooth autofocus operation."

There seems to be plenty of instances of SDM being interpreted as being short for silent drive motor yet I have never seen any evidence of Pentax (Hoya) using the SDM with this meaning - only their name for ultrasonic lenses.

Yet Pentax (in the media release about the DA 18-135mm) has clearly linked the DC motor to the SDM autofocus system. I haven't pulled apart the lens, but it seems to me that most of the evidence suggests that the direct current motor is a conventional DC micro-motor, although I note that Falk Lumo suggested that it was a "new, faster ultrasonic focus motor". Can someone definitively say that it is a conventional DC micro-motor? And if so, why are Pentax using SDM for a non ultrasonic AF lens? Have they broaden their definition of what SDM refers to?

Well, I think you better let Pentax know that they're spreading misinformation:

Oh shoot, even this site states that it has "a DC motor for the SDM focusing system".

Anyway, a terrific lens (already have a copy) - very versatile. Good luck with the sale!

K-5 in Australia?

I had a kit on order too. I'd spent a lot of time on the phone with the retailer and CRK in the lead up to Christmas. The kit price I was paying was about $600 more than the body only price. I was getting desperate to get a K-5 so I was asking what price they could do for the body only plus the DA 18-135mm (because the official kits do come in the one box). They wanted to charge me $789 for the lens. In the end I decided to just get the body here and get the lens from Adorama for < AU$600 (and ordered a few other things at the same time). CR Kennedy weren't interested in price matching the grey import and neither the retailer nor CRK were interested in helping out a customer who had been waiting > 1month for a K-5 & DA 18-135mm kit by offering a price for both items individually at close to the kit price.

K-5 in Australia?

I'm starting to get a little disgruntled now. I had ordered a K-5 & DA 18-135mm kit which was originally due on the 4th. Four days later I got an email saying that they were now due on the 22nd. Yesterday I was told that they were still due today (22nd), didn't hear anything by mid-afternoon so gave them a call to check it was still worth coming in to pick up the kit tomorrow. No stock and no new ETA. I can understand there's a shortage here in Australia but the lack of communication was starting to tick me off.

I called CRK to see if they had an idea on when to expect the kits - they weren't sure but told me that the DA 18-135mm lenses had arrived and they could ship them overnight if I had a store to order from. So I called me retailer of choice back asking to get a price if I ordered a K-5 body (which they have in stock) and a DA 18-135mm lens as separate items rather than the kit. Their response, "we don't have the DA 18-135mm in our system so we can't give you a price". And when I asked if they could call CRK to get a price so that I could most likely order them as separate items they said that they couldn't help. How messed up is that? So frustrating!

I too voted for the DA 14mm with my $. It is so often overlooked in discussions about UWA lenses. It was such a difficult decision between it, the DA 12-24mm and the DA 15mm. I chose it for its max aperture and close focus (which can make for some interesting shots). I liked the extra versatility of FL of the DA 12-24mm and it looked to be a comparable performer sharpness wise. The DA 15mm was also very tempting largely because of its size. I'm really happy with the DA 14mm but I'd love to have all three. If I had to pick one from the list above, it would probably be the 12-24mm but I haven't voted for it because I'd still stick with the DA 14mm (if it were an option in this pole).

Focus Screen on K-x

It is changeable, and user-changeable too. I put a Katzeye screen into my K-x. It was a little fiddly but if I can do it just about anyone can. I recommend the Katzeye but if I had my time over I'd go with one of the cheaper options probably. The Katzeye is good, but debatable if it was worth the extra dosh.

P52-3-1 Architecture - Old

I forgot to mark the start of the new year of Project 52 into my calendar and so only realised today that I had missed it. So while this was only taken today (9th August in Australia), I figured I'd post it anyway for those that are interested. I hope this will be the closest I come to missing a week this year.

As I only had today to get a shot I wasn't able to scout around as much as I would have liked but this is the building I am currently working in. Not exceptionally old but then there aren't many truly old buildings in Brisbane. It certainly isn't what I would describe as modern architecture so hopefully everyone is willing to accept it as old architecture.

The shot was taken with a K-x with M-50mm f/1.7 at ISO 800, f/1.7 and 1/40s exposure.

A very handy website. I too have the Metz 48 for the same reasons. I think it's a pretty good unit, especially for the price. While the UI isn't what I'd call intuitive, it's too bad at all and the manual is clear and easily understood (I remember reading somewhere that the Sigma flash manuals weren't always the easiest to understand).

After starting in week 44 of project 52-2, I had intended to participate the rest of project 52-2 but was then without a camera for a few weeks and by the time it came back it was the middle of university exams (and was pretty busy at work). But that hasn't diminished my enthusiasm to participate in Project 52-3 - I'm really looking forward to it!

Kx Back Focus???

There is an AF adjustment in the debug menu. A google search will find you the instructions. As rawr said though, I think it is a global adjustment (affects every lens). However, Pentax are able to adjust AF for individual lenses - I just had my K-x and FA 31mm AF adjusted because of a back focus issue.

(yay, post 100 for me!)

How often has waiting for the SR confimation icon resulted in missed shots?

I've never missed a shot waiting for the SR. If waiting for the SR means I'm going to miss the shot, then I'll just take it. Undoubtedly I have had some shots which weren't as sharp as they could have been because I didn't wait for the SR.

In shooting sports generally you're going to be using a fast enough shutter that it won't be a problem.
