Thanks for the feedback.

> Post processing - nothing :) I'm a raw novice and don't really know what to alter to enhance a shot yet, hence posting here.
> Yes, monopod with anti-shake off.
> Position - I'm actually behind the goal about 10yds offset. The player is making diagonal run into the box from the sideline. I know what you mean about refs not liking parents behind goals, however my exp is if you ask first and make sure you do not coach or yell from that location they don't care.
> Contrast curves - Mmm will have to read up on that :D

Best lens for basketball

I recently purchased a KX 2-lens kit with the 18-55 & 55-300 lenses. My application is youth indoor basketball. They only play 1/2 court so my distances range from about 5-35ft. Light is 90% florescent 10% natural. My experiences so far have been;

DA-L 55-300 @55-70mm,f/4,3200iso,1/125-1/160 Av - noisy, moderate blurring on feet etc.
DA-L 18-55 @55mm, f/5.6,6400iso,1/125 Av - v. noisy, worse see above
M 50/f1.7 50mm,f/1.7,4000iso,1/320-1/1000 Av - little if any noise, manual focusing v. difficult (90% were not in focus). No blurring, focal length a little too short.
Sears 135/f2.8 - untested

I bought the 50/1.7 more for portraits, but also to gauge focal length (it was only $25 too!). Based on the above I'm concluding a 70-100mm prime may be my best option, but it has to be fast to avoid the noise issues. Also AF is a must. Ideally an FA 77mm/f1.8 ltd would be my first choice at $600-650used, but are there any other cheaper options I should consider?

Thanks,
Jon.

Good value used prime alternative to SMC-A f/1.4?

After some more reading about full manual lenses from the sticky and reading the advice here I concluded it was not that much of a deal to leave the aperture at f/1.7-2 and use Tv (i.e full manual). Tonight I picked up a mint SMC-M f/1.7 for $25 locally and am going to give it a whirl. I guess its all part of the learning curve to try something and find out for yourself what does and doesn't work.

Thanks for all the help.

Good value used prime alternative to SMC-A f/1.4?

I'm looking for a used fast 50mm prime for my K-x to shoot some basketball (the kit 18-55 is forcing me to f4/125/6400 which doesn't freeze the action and has high grain). Ideal case is a SMC A F/1.4, however these are getting harder and harder to find in my <$125 target price. What other alternatives are there from other manufacturers that would still give me auto-aperture ("A" setting)?. I'm a newbie and going full manual metering is a bit daunting. Basically are there other 'A' type lenses from Takumar, Sears etc worth considering.?

Thanks,
Jon.

Well I took the plunge and picked up a K-x with the 18-55 & 55-300 DA-L kit lenses. Got the camera today. Very happy so far. Canon monopod/Pentax slingbag/lense hood on the way. :D

Getting both a 18-55 and 55-300 DA (even the cheaper L version) for $750 shipped is a steal in my opinion. I'm planning on learning camera techniques with the kit lenses then probably adding a DA 50-135 later. The camera will have far more capabilities than me for quite a while.

What do you recommend for a good value monopod, say in the <$150 range?

Thanks for all the advice.

All great advice, thank you. Also bear in mind that my kid (8yrs) is playing on a reduced sized field (55 x 35yds) so my total reach is far from what would be seen at a pro match. That being said is it safe to assume that the 50-135 would be enough to capture the action? The other option mentioned would only cost me ~$100 more as the 50-200 is available as the 2-lens kit the K-x for about $700 street (18-55 & 50-200).

My other question is regarding used lenses. I see a lot of K-mount prime/zoom lenses on Craigslist, many as part of older K1000 packages (Vivitar, Pentax, Tamron etc.). Some appear to be of decent quality. Is it worth buying a KA->K adapter and experimenting with a few or am I wasting my time?. We are talking $20-80ea for the lenses.

Please keep the advice coming. I'm learning a ton on this forum. :D

As much as I would like to pick up a couple of the high quality DA* lenses, its too much $$ for me. I'm thinking that a good compromise may be to get the K-x with the kit 18-55 DA L lens ($600) then add either the Sigma or Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 for another $700-750. All told I would have about $1400 to start. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Jon.

In the next month or two I intend on upgrading from an old 35mm Canon EOS 600 to a DSLR. After considering the T1i, D90 (used), 50D (used), D5000 and the K-x I had pretty much settled on the K-x. My application is 80% kids sports (soccer, basketball, baseball) and a 20% motorsports/family stuff. That is until I read that Pentax's weak area is continuous AF. Am I making a mistake in going for the pentax with these applications? Should I reconsider the Canon?

My budget is <$1000 body/lenses that cover ~30-300mm (35mm equiv). I am a novice photographer.

Thanks,
Jon.
