DA* 300mm on a K1 issues

I took this handheld with the k1 and DA* 300. I took a few others with different aperture settings and found I liked the out of focus area best at around f8, but as you can see the DOF is rather narrow. I haven't done any focus adjustments, but I usually focus manually... For reference, the flowers are about 2.5 inches in diameter. There is a screen and my house behind the flowers... This is one of the reasons I use the DA*300 like a macro lens sometimes as it does such a great job blurring out what I don't want...

I recommend trying manual focus, with and without Live View...

Orlando trip in April

Hi, I live in Melbourne Florida. If you do a google map search of the area east of Disney, past the Orlando International Airport all the way to the beach you will see several wildlife refuge's. Usually open, unless rains wash out some of the roads, you can drive or walk in them. Some have bird watching platforms. The Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands is a small area where I've taken numerous photos of gators and birds. Also if you go to Titusville FL you can drive out to Playalinda beach, which comes within about a mile of launch complex 39B where the Space Shuttle was launched. There may even be a launch while you are here (SpaceX). They close the beach access when there is a launch for safety, but on the way to the beach is the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge where there are a lot of birds, gators and snakes... There are airboat rides on Highway 50 (Orlando to Titusville) and SR 520 towards Cocoa FL as well... I grew up in Titusville FL and should point out that coming from New York you should be prepared for a different level of sophistication, but the areas are relatively safe and friendly... There are no mask requirements here, which is why we have a significantly high level of Covid right now, but hopefully April will be better... Using the 450mm for a launch should get you some decent keepers. I use my 300mm for the gators too, as there is no 'Lifeguard' on duty in the refuge's... Have fun...

I'm reading all the suggestions and appreciate them. Many reiterate my point. Some of you are champions of a certain lens, but in the next post someone says there's a better solution. See what I mean?

If it matters I'll let everyone know what I get...

Thanks again...

Remember during the old days (film) how easy it was? You only had to decide what max aperture you you wanted to pay for.

I like this better. More choices...

I don't WANT to spend a lot, but since my wife won't let me get a motorcycle, and I'ts getting more difficult to stand up on a surfboard at my age, and I'm terrible at fishing, I don't mind spending what I need to on a good lens. I bought the 16-50, 50-135 and Tamron 90 used, but the FA31 and 70-200 new. I don't mind used, but the coatings on some of the new lenses supposedly help with some of the mistakes I make when trying to take photo's...

It was the clarity. Had it at +1. I think it only affects the jpegs which I never really use... I wanted to see if I could get a decent jpeg so I recently set a few parameters to experiment.

This was taken with my DFA 70-200. I'm still trying to find focus with it. Most of my shots are slightly OOF. Might be the shutter speed. Tried to calibrate the focus, but can't seem to get anything that's not a little fuzzy.

Anyway, this one turned out ok. ISO 1600, hand held, no crop, no saturation adjustment, Topaz DN6 Light RAW setting, No sharpening.

All of this doesn't matter anyway. When was the last time you heard someone say, "I was wrong". Growing up I would occasionally hear that but not lately. Very few people have the courage anymore to do that, certainly not our 'politicians'. People aren't going to vote for an incumbent they didn't vote for the first time because they would have to admit (at least to themselves) they were wrong. God forbid, they are all WAY too smart to have ever made a mistake

I have a k5 in several 'Carts', but just couldn't pull the trigger. I felt I could live with my k7 and k-x for a while longer, just to see what may be next. I'm very happy to see this. I hope it doesn't take until 2013 to ship though...

I probably should stay out of this, but it's never been my style, or I'm a slow learner. I'll try one constructive comment.

I really like this forum. I really like my Pentax gear (k7, k-x, many lenses). I read this forum for information and sometimes ask questions. I usually get a good response or two, or many. I read the lens reviews, and peruse the marketplace. I occasionally PM inquiring about a lens, or gear, and have purchased too. I read the other forum too, but much less lately because of the aggressive personalities.

Personally, I don't have a problem with what some of you call "whiners". I read what they post, and most of the time I 'get' what they are trying to say. Believe it or not, some people just want to interact and feel like they're a part of something... something as great as this forum for example. I usually ignore the inevitable response to the less than flattering posts about Pentax. You know, the response denigrating someone’s opinion. I'm happy with my gear, but that doesn't mean everyone else has to be. I've learned a lot here, and in fact have delayed and probably given up on my desire for a k-5 due to its problems. I'm not saying it's not the best camera out there right now, in fact from what I've read it is the best APS-C, and would venture to say it's probably one of the top five, maybe even three cameras available today. I'm happy with my k7 though, which I'll guess is about 90% as good as the k-5. I’ll just work around the existing issues.

Those inevitable responses to those with legitimate concerns bother me. I don’t read them, unless they’re too short to avoid, or I don’t see the responder’s name quick enough. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I know you’ve heard that before and yes that includes those that respond negatively to the OP or their original criticism. Aggressively attacking someone posting information you may not like or agree with will inevitably result in a decrease in those type of posts, which I believe would be harmful to everyone. Please remember that some people here don’t discover the issues at the same time you do, may not be here on the forum as much as you, and may not be aware that their issue has been ‘covered’.

Please cut the OP's some slack. If you don’t like what they say, don’t read it. I don’t believe anyone here, at least 99% of those here are trying to make you feel stupid for purchasing a k-5. Please don’t try to make them look stupid for expressing an opinion.

I just don’t want to see this forum turn into what I’ve seen other forums turn into.

Bill
