any ir remote should work .. the only thing is you may only get one shot of per button press on the remote. i just tried the above setup and was finally able to get catch in focus to work using my cheap 3$ remote i got on dealsextreme. can't wait to try this with taking some shots of my dog tonight.

I'm a newb to both astro-photography and DSLR world and i managed to get this shot using my k-x, deepskystacker, and only 4 exposures (+1 dark frame) starfield1 on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
shots were taken in manual mode at 30s, iso800, f20, 18mm. I exposed a bit further in adobe raw. stacked in deepskystacker and processed the rest in cs4
i have no idea where in the sky i was shooting or what i actually captured as the 2 green marks but I am pretty sure they are globular clusters. For the camera to capture that detail in 4 30s exposures say to me that i'm not likely to need to take exposures longer then that and ever have to worry about the noise reduction kicking in.
not to mention theres no real way to perfectly time your exposures over 30s without some software aid which the k-x doesn't have and i'd much rather stack then deep deep expose. At least in my limited experience so far the stacking seems to be the smart way to go to get good results.

with any IR remote that triggers the camera you can set the following settings with bulb mode
hold button for release
press once to release once to end exposue
same as above but with 3s delay before release (lock up)
no need for wired remote there imo

Posted this in the Pentax K-x flickr group. ::
With the batteries the cam came with (energizer lithiums... not even advanced or ultimates) i took about 1100 snaps with varying settings and flash use. I was unable to get ultralast 2000mah nimhs to work but was able to get a set of duracell 2650mahs and a set of targus 2300mahs working. With the duracell I had taken about 500-600 shots before it started to go yellow, many being long exposure.
I had a second run of 500-600 pics (most long exposure) + 2 videos + in camera processing before battery depletion on the duracells. If that kind of performance holds up then thats the only battery brand i'll need. like 8-9$ for a 4 pack and can charge them in a hr 1/2 on a decent smart charger. cant beat it.
