Canon 7D vs Pentax K-5: A comparison

My point in posting that isnt that it did or didnt have it. My point was that there was a reason the other dial couldnt be there. It was an ergonomics issue that was being discussed.

You cant say the better sensor makes the better camera, unless its like a night and day difference and these 2 are very close.

If you say that just because the sensor is slightly better, then you can say the slightly better engine makes the better motorcycle. Well, being that I owned both the K5 and 7d AND ive owned a GSXR1300 (Hayabusa) and a GSXR1000, I can tell you the busa has a better engine, but there is a REASON you dont see ANY hayabusa racing on a GP track, cuz a 1000 would eat its lunch. Yet put then in a straight line and the busa smokes the 1000.

SOOO as i commented before, look at the camera as a whole, not pick a few features and call it a done deal and MOST importantly, look at the job you want to do and then chose the camera to fit that need.

Having both the K5 and 7d, the 7d is better at video AND better at sports shots and does portraits JUST as well as a k5, hence the reason you dont see many if any K5's used by top Pro SportsShooters. If I were just doing portraits, there would be no reason to go with a 7d.

My K5 with my da* 16-50 was amazing, as was the other two da*'s i owned. BUT my 7d with my 70-200L 2.8 blows the k5 and da* 60-250 away in performance alone and tracking when Im shooting fast action and the pictures are just as amazing as the k5.

I also thought Id never use video, but now that Ive gotten into that world, its nice to have the 7d with all that it can do, again, what the k5 cant do.

So try and keep an open mind, like so many on here complain that all the other canikon sites do not and look at the camera as a whole and the job your going to use it for, then judge.

That was my point in my first post, you cant just take a picture of a fence and say one is better than the other. Different tools for different jobs.

As I said, if you just take portraits, the K5 is fine for that and if you do a review on just taking portraits, then the K5 could have a slight edge on the 7d, do a sports review and its the 7d on top, do a video and again its the 7d advantage.

hmm, maybe im misunderstanding, so let me reiterate, I CAN without taking my eye off the viewfinder, change the aperture with the rear dial wheel with my thumb and shutter speed with my index finger on the front dial on my 7d. If i want to change ISO, i move my index finger above the front dial and hit the iso button still w/o taking my eye out of the viewfinder.

There is a reason why the wheel and didnt put a dial up at the top of the thumb, but unless you use the 7d and some of its features you wouldnt know that. I didnt and now I use it and its come in handy many a times.

The AF-ON button is there. That button can be modified to be the "half press" of the shutter INSTEAD of it being on the shutter button. Its really nice to do that, so when you seperate the two, you can use your thumb to hit the AF-ON button, that will AF/Track etc and once you take your thumb off it will be set, then you can just press the shutter button and take the pic WITHOUT having to worry about it focusing again.

Sports shooters use this to be able to say track a player get focus and then let the button go and if say a ref passed in front it wont refocus on the ref coming across.
The link says it better than I do

HUH? the 7d exposure controls are at your fingertips AND whats the joystick have to do with it in M mode? You cant tell me that moving quickly between settings, quickly up, down or sideways is a bad thing. MUCH faster than having to scroll sideways through every setting to get to the last one.

I shoot in M mode all the time, and I can change shutter speed with with front dial and change aperture with the rear dial, if i want to change my ISO i hit the button right above the front dial.

Ya and thats why I hesitated to change, I didnt think it would make sense to switch when they were reviewed so close, but when I did and saw ALL that the 7d (and other canons ie 1dmiii and up) can do, its not as close as it seems, I wish now I had done it sooner.

I agree, Ive read many a posts about pentax users complaining about a canon reviews winning on a canon site, or that a reviewer gets paid by canon/nikon etc and this is no different. This wasnt even close to an unbiased or even helpful review.

This would have been a better post had he just said "here is what I like about the k5" and been done with it.

That review was like reviewing a Buell Sport Bike to a ANY one of the 4 major Japanese Sport Bikes and driving them both to the end of your driveway and saying the Buell is better than the others because its better ergonomics, lighter weight and can get to the end of your driveway only slightly slower. There is a REASON you didnt see Buell competing on the track with any of them (they tried) and a REASON you dont many K5's on a Pro Sports field being used by professional photographers.

Ive owned 4 cameras, the Pentax A3000, k20, k5 and NOW a 7d. I loved the K5 it was great for what it did and it only took me a day or two to get used to the 7d. Ive got to say the 7d for what I do is amazing! There are some great features that were not even mentioned, probably because the k5 doesnt have them and that would make the edge go to the 7d.

If you want to take portraits, the k5 is plenty of camera no doubt. But if you want to compare them overall 7d is the better choice.

Its also nice to do a burst of pics and not have to wait for the buffer to empty to the card. I guess that because the writes the the CF card are faster in the 7d then the write speed to the SD card in the K5, but since there wasnt a comparison in the review, Im not sure who gets the "edge".

If your going to do a review, review ALL that both cameras can do and in different scenarios, not just take a couple pictures of a fence and call game.

WELL, I just recently got them, and used them without banding BUT, hadnt gone all the way up to 180th. SO did a test good until 125th and then yes, at 180 ONLY did they band. So then I should have said the have no problems UNTIL 180th! :o

I have the PT-04's and NO banding at 180th

You can move the flash closer to over power the ambient, if possible. You could even hand hold the off camera flash and hold it inches fm the subject, even in frame and crop it out later, again, if possible depending on the situation.
