Student Budget

I'm a student studying photography at CEGEP level (college in Quebec) at Dawson College and I'm currently using a K-7, Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 EX DG, Pentax SMC 50mm f1.7, Pentax DA 55-200mm f4-5.6, an old Vivatar f2.8 and a Sigma EF-530 flash.

Most of my gear is used, bought from various sources except the K-7 which was bought new after my older K100D fell onto concrete while on a tripod (sad, sad day).
Honestly, I completely understand your lack of funds to buy new/top quality gear...it IS very difficult to save enough money while in school and still maintain good grades, a part-time job and a decent social life.

Luckily, I'm fortunate enough to have a part-time job and some fantastic parents who support me. Without the two there would be no way in hell I could have amassed the gear I have now. But, thankfully, it IS possible. There are tons of ways you can make money these days. Just make a viral video and upload it to Youtube and let them pay you for advertising when you reach a million views... (yeah, that happens:D)

All joking aside, if you're truly interested in purchasing better gear for your hobby, it's always a great start to try and make money off of your services. A k100D is plenty capable of capturing some great shots and if you're creative enough, I'm sure you can find ways to get your photos out there to the public and get some income from doing so.
As an example, I've shot everything from real estate photographs for a friend's family business, club/party photographs where I was literally payed to dance, drink, meet some cool people and take pictures for parties and corporate portraits for a CEGEP insitution here in Montreal to be used on their website/brochures.
Just try to promote yourself as much as possible, even Facebook helps. (I've never used for promotional purposes myself, but I know many people/students who have)

We all need to start from somewhere...

Quick question: what is that?

As most other replies have pointed out, it's definitely a light leak. Seeing as 16mm film is getting increasingly more popular in the snowboard film industry (if you can call it that), then it only makes sense that some of this movie was shot with a combination of 16mm film and digital HD video.
Another perfect example of such heavy use of 16mm film in a snowboarding movie would be "Montreal: a 16mm Snowboard Documentary" which was entirely filmed with a 16mm film camera. And it's also got an incredible mix of scenery (street and mountain) and music.

Actually, here's a video that one of the main filmers shot in a helicopter circa 2006. Looks like "That's it, that's all" wasn't completely revolutionary in their soundtrack choice after all. :D

There are some really nice shots in there, particularly the last one of the wheat fields. Really beautiful and the shallow depth of field really adds to it.
I also liked your idea of centering around a fairly random theme, it worked well in this case!

Just curious, is the music from Electric President? Or any Ben Cooper project?

Really? No love for the Portuguese yet?

7-0 against Korea DPR. Absolutely brilliant game for the Portuguese...everything was perfect.
Sadly for the Koreans, not so much.

As a fan of graffiti writers, and the art-form itself, these pieces are not very attractive.
The hand-styles aren't impressive, and the flow of the letters in the throw-ups are quite amateur.

That being said, I think you had the right intention and the right approach to shooting this art phenomenon. It takes some research, and a keen eye, but I'm sure you can find more interesting paintings/throw-ups to photograph. And, when you do find some very colourful, complex and downright beautiful ones, try adding more of the scenery around the trains.

First off, the off-centering of the horizon works well and the colours are vivid.
Also, the exposure is spot on. Which can be tricky in these circumstances, so kudos for that.

In my opinion, the weak part of the photo is the entire foreground. I just don't see the tree branches bringing anything to the photograph. It's always a nice idea to add a touch of objects/scenery in the foreground, especially in landscapes. Yet, the clutter of tree branches, and the fact that we don't know where any of them are coming from, make it very distracting.

Otherwise, a very nice attempt. Keep at it! :) If you have the chance, try going back to that spot and shooting above the trees to get the whole scene behind them.

It's a god damn traditional South African instrument. I don't understand what all the fuss is about. It's part of the spirit and atmosphere of being at/watching a football match, especially in this new territory for FIFA.

I think everyone needs to take a breather, and enjoy the game for what it is. Not the noises in the background. Because, if everyone complains, then why don't we stop fans from chanting their clubs/country's name over and over? Or take away their face paint? Or their team jerseys? It's all part of the game.

How about we stop selling hot-dogs and beer here in America during sports events?
That's what I thought...

I thought this video was pretty entertaining. It had some funny lines. The guy is an awful singer/rapper, but that's not really the point.
It was clever, and very well done.

As for the Pentax reference, kudos to them. That made me laugh also. Do I agree with it? No. But, I'm not going to let it bother me just because some fool with stretched ears and tattoos chugging Coca-Cola brings Pentax down.

Besides, this Joey Lawrence guy is the photographer who shot the "Twilight" movie posters. Respect points? Zero.

If you're looking for a Canadian city that has lots to offer, come to Montreal.
And if you're looking for a software haven, come to Montreal. We have plenty of software/video game/graphic design/movie production giants here.

Similarly to Toronto, we also have a vast variety of different cultures here in the city. I'm not going to go into detail and name them all, but there are tons. Montreal has so much to offer, it's hard to see it all even if you live here.
Also, if you like music, we've got plenty of music festivals (The Jazz Festival, Osheaga) and if you like to laugh, there's the Just for Laughs festival.
And if you've ever been tempted to take a weekend getaway to Paris, or anywhere in Europe, Old Montreal has a very similar atmosphere and architecture to most European cities so you wouldn't have to look very far.

I don't know, maybe some will disagree, but I think it's a beautiful city.

Poll: How much gear on family trips?

The last trip I took that was worth lugging photo gear around for, was two years ago in New York City and Washington D.C.
It was our high school graduation trip, and I brought along:

K100D
Canon AE-1
Holga 120FN

Pentax 18-55mm kit lens
Pentax 50-200mm kit
Pentax SMC 50mm f1.7
Canon 50mm f2
Canon 24mm f2.8

and various other accessories.

It was definitely a lot to carry, I ended up only using the AE-1 once or twice. But, I guess the other two cameras were worth it.

The 18% Gray card

They are quite a useful tool to have in your kit. Especially when correct colour and white balance are necessary for your final images/client.

To give an example of how extreme some people are about the 18% gray card:

A professor of mine actually painted the wall behind his computer screen in his office 18% gray for accurate colour correction.
I'm not saying you need to do this, I found it incredibly ridiculous when I heard it.
Whatever it takes, I guess.

I haven't seen Shutter Island yet. I've heard good things about it, but your comment on "people not making good movies these days" is a pretty bold statement.

I think you just need to look past all the big budget Hollywood movies, and then perhaps you'll find something interesting and worthwhile.

Thanks a bunch for your insight. The reason I didn't crop the bottom image from the left is because I quite liked the pipes/chimneys at the top right. Also, I thought it would loose it's "Editorial" portrait quality, and that's what I was originally going for. Most of my pictures were framed tightly, and I found it to be the odd man out and coincidentally it became my favourite of the bunch.
Again, thanks for your input. I really appreciate it! Best of luck with your critiquing. You've done a fine job, in my opinion.

K7 Shutter Speed on Radio Triggers

The K-7 can't sync past 1/180 of a second.
There's no way you're going to get it to sync with a flash at a faster shutter speed than that. Even if you set it to 1/200 or 1/500, it just won't fire.

No Clue What to Do With My Flash

Why would you purchase the most high-end Pentax flash on the market, if you have no clue how to use it...?

I suppose if you don't know where to start, the manual is always a good idea. After that, try messing around with it a little and see where that gets you. If you still feel you need better instructions, try searching on Strobist (as was already mentioned) They have an incredible archive of tutorials, tips and tricks on small, portable strobes. Mostly based around Canon Speedlights and Nikon SBs but, they're all quite universally applicable to other flash brands, such as Pentax.

Hope everything works out for the best, enjoy the flash.

Where have you heard of Pentax myths?

Regarding the "obnoxious" Canon and Nikon users out there and their hatred for Pentax cameras,

Coming from a Professional Photography program in Montreal, Quebec (the only English photography program in Quebec), with around 60 students all owning Nikon or Canon cameras, I think it's fair to say I feel a little outnumbered at times. I am literally the only one out of 60 students in my year who owns and uses a Pentax camera.

That being said, I do not think it's a superior attitude that these "Canikon" users have towards us Pentax users, but it's rather a very ignorant one. Most of them do not even have a clue what Pentax is. And, if they do, they have the smallest amount of respect for anyone who uses one. I understand that Pentax may be a tiny part of the photographic community and market, but it's hilarious to see how ignorant people can be towards something they've never heard of.

In consequence, there have been times where owning a Pentax has had it's limitations. Especially with studio-based photography and equipment. (i.e tethered shooting, tilt-shift lenses, and other studio accessories not compatible with Pentax)

All in all, I'm extremely happy with the choice I've made in camera equipment. And, don't get me wrong, my classmates are not terrible people. They have just developed a mindset which makes them focus on certain, more popular camera brands.
Of course, this is only a small obvservation I've come to make in such a small community of young photographers, but I think it's worth sharing.

Don't hate on Canon and Nikon users, and they won't hate on you. Playground rules.

I've never posted any photographs on here before, but since I'm a student in a Professional Photography program, I do have lots to show.
Recently, in my Photo Location class, we have been focusing on using Flash on location. The first two weeks we used portable strobes (my Sigma EF530 DG Super) and this past week we got to use studio flashes (White Lightning) on location.

Here are some of the images I submitted to my teacher. Let me know what you think :)
Don't be shy, it's what I go to school for, I need to hear criticism. Teacher's comments can get a little mundane to hear all the time. So, anything is appreciated. Thanks everyone!

Absolutely stunning photographs. I was in awe the entire time I was scrolling down the page.
I'm taking a class on South East Asia right now and these have really given me a visual link to everything we've been reading about.
Angkor Wat must have been incredible to visit!

I'm still in shock. These are so great:lol:
