I've the older "Sigma 10-20mm non-HSM" and the "Sigma 30mm f1.4". Both screwdrive and I've not noticed any focus problems.

Flash not released

Yeah, I'll keep that in mind if it gives me more trouble. Some flashes are said to work better "unscrewed". Seemed to work fine when shooting at 1/80s at least.

A little slow shutter but works okay for the shots I make indoor using the Dörr-flash. Hopefully it will work flawless with the studioflashes and my Cactus v4 (haven't had the chance to test yet).

Discovered that my K-5 with an on-camera flash (Dörr DAF42) are not always releasing the flash.

Seems like first shot = no flash, second shot = flash - repeating like:

1
2 FLASH
3
4 FLASH
5
6 FLASH
7

Camera is in M-mode at 1/100. I'm running the flash at 1/4 power and the flash is fully reloaded while trying to take the photos. Some settings I've missed?

Thought maybe it's the exposure bracketing, but I've tried in Hi-mode and single photo-mode too.

Got worried when I tried "Continous shooting Hi" and it gave me 3 RAW and max 5 JPGs at 2 megapixel

Updated the firmware and now it gave me 19 RAW files without slowing down! Great!

SDM response from cameralensrentals

I own the 50-135 and it's a really fine piece of lens. First trying it out, it really opened a new world for me.

I had an early copy - and yes... I had SDM failure after about 1˝ year. Replaced the SDM-engine 2 month ago and it costed 150 euro including everything.

But I belive and they've solved the problem with the early SDMs. I've friends with early SDMs that hasn't had any problem now nearly 3 years later.

So a DA* is highly recommended - and let's say that you can expect a failure after 5 years... then 150 euro isn't a that high price for what you get. Other brands reports failure of their AF-engines as well.

I've pre-ordered mine for 10999 SEK (8 566 DKK / 1144 EURO) - that's body only including shipping.

Don't know the release for it... only one shop has listed oct 30th as "expected date of delivery". So I guess we're moving closer.

A couple K5 shots (100 vs 51200)

With noise like that, the photos are usuable for smaller prints.

I don't print a lot of photos, but I got some free prints some time ago and decided to test how noisy ISO 1600 photos from my K10D would look like. The prints was.. ehm... "a half regular A4 paper"-size and there was nearly no visible noise and the photo looks great.

I guess 51200 on the K5 is not as good as 1600 on the K10D, but it's not that big difference. Will be great when my K5 arrives! :)

Looks good up to ISO 6400 I must say.

Looks like your focus on the K5 is a little off - while looking at the films. But that might be because the human behind the manual focusing.

The K-5 will be a huge upgrade when it comes to ISO-performance compared to my K10D. Finally I'll be able to shot sports and dancing at high ISO without getting overly noisy photos.

I pre-ordered the K-5 today (1100 euro).

I'm upgrading from K10D and expect to get better ISO-performance and autofocus mainly. But also I'll get some handy functions like AF-correction per lens, higher fps, better DR, 14bit RAW, video-mode.

It will be a killer-combo together with my DA* lens that are on repair for the moment, because of faulty SDM. To replace the SDM-motor cost me 150 euro including return shipping.

Yes of course. It has really been a pain in the a**. Such an expensive lens that broke down. I've used it on my K10D with downgraded firmware with screwdrive AF. But with a new camera that's impossible.

I expected the repair to be overly expensive - so I've been looking for a replacement lens. But looking at Sigma and Tamron and realize that they're not as good made me send the DA* to repair and I got surprised with the cost.

So hopefully I'll will soon have a really great combo with the K-5 and DA*-lens :)

I pre-order the K-5 (house only) for around 1100 euro in Sweden.
Earlier this week I sent my DA* 50-135 for repair (SDM failure). Will cost me 150 euro including return shipping. Fair price I belive.

SDM repair costs and secondary failure rates

I've a failure SDM motor too. I emailed the company that does the Pentax repairs in Sweden yesterday just to see what it might cost to replace the SDM motor on my DA* 50-135 that started to fail after about 14 month.

The lens work fine on my K10D with hacked firmware, but I'm planning to upgrade the camera. It's a shame that means that I can't use my best lens if I do.

Then I belive that K-r has "Front/back focus correction", but missing the "Lens correction" not the other way.

That means that you set the focus correction for the whole camera and not per lens. K-5 holds up to 10 (?) lenses in memory.

Seems nice this far. Always things that can be made better.

Optional SDM would be more then great and worth a lot. Can't be any cost for Pentax to include that setting. Not fun to have a boken DA* that I only can use with my K10D with hacked firmware.

Now I'll wait for some ISO-noise sampleshots and of course see what the price might be after a few weeks.

Would love to see a funtion allowing the user to use either SDM or in-house focusmotor. Hate it that I want be able to use AF with my DA* 50-135 if I buy a new camera, due to SDM-failure. Must be a really simple fix for Pentax.

Brief info about K-5 and KR

I find it fun that when K-7 came out I read tons of reviews where ppl where overwhelmed. It was so fantastic... Not that much different then the K20D in the specs - I think?

Now the K-5 are rumored and the specs are just a little higher. It's still the great body with all buttons and functions. We hope to get great ISO-performance, better AF and better video-performance.

If K-5 nail those three changes I think it's a great camera! K-7 was really great, but for me the ISO-performance isn't enough.

If real-life test proves that the K-5 ISO-performance is 1-2 steps better I will buy one. If the price are too high I might look at the K-r.

I think those two cameras together with the 645D will be a great combination for Pentax. Then there's the rumored/confirmed EVIL too?

How many SDM lenses do/did you own?
1

What SDM lenses do/did you own? List which ones you did owned and which ones you now do own.
50-135

Which ones were bought used and which ones are bought new?
50-135 second owner

How long have you owned which ones?
50-135 for 12 months (it's bought ~22 month ago)

Which lens have not failed on you?
-

Which ones have failed on you once?
50-135

Which ones have failed after SDM repair?
-

If it failed on you would you send it in for repairs? If no, why?
No warranty (looking over possible solutions - taping pins, firmware, repair etc)

If one failed on you, how would that change your view on Pentax if it does all?
Will not buy any SDM-lens, have hard to even motivate myself to buy anything more from Pentax. Such a expensive lens that fails and they give no support at all, even if this seems to be a common/known problem.

Poll: Screw drive firmware for SDM lenses

(Edit: Found a way to use the regular focus mechanism instead of SDM. I downloaded a hacked firmware that took me back to 1.10, then upgraded to 1.20 that don't support SDM (don't know if there are any more changes in the 1.30 firmware).. Anyway... it works fine and my DA* 50-135 is focusing just fine now without the SDM)

Original message:
I own a DA* 50-135 with failing SDM. If the lens hasn't been used for a while it takes some time to get it started. If I spend 10-20 minutes on focusing back and forth I eventually get it to focus normal. Then if it lays for a few days it's the same thing. Feels like it gets worse each time - so Yes! I want to be able to chose focus mechanism.

Really sad/bad that a such expensive lens have this problem. Started after 14 month and no warranty at all as I'm the second owner.

I will not buy any SDM lens until this is fixed.
