K-3ii marked as discontinued

I just accessed the Ricoh/Pentax USA Website. Click on "products" ..and all the DSLRs show up, including the KIII, K1 and 645z... BUT.click on K1 (or KIII, or K70, or 645z)... and no corresponding page shows up - either by error, incompetence, or indifference... Instead they offer low end cameras, plus the KP, K50 with which you can make comparisons...(like comparing apples and oranges).

..so it looks like the K1 is not being marketed either.

This is worrisome folks. If Ricoh cared about the DSLR and higher end market, it would not front a fragmented, incomplete website like this.

K5 light meter malfunctioning

Thank you everyone, for your replies,

Last year I described the problem to them and they told me to send it in. What bugs me is that its happened again. I do know that the things has always had a bad (a capacitor, I think it was) that has always prevented the camera from registering the proper year. The Pentax repair guy on the phone assured me that only the date would be affected by that defect. The lenses are all current digital Pentax, Inc. and the problem is not lens dependent. I recall the fix to be software only, not sure if firmware was replaced. I did install Vers. 1.14 with the defective camera, in the hopes of fixing the problem..

Automatic mode remains unaffected. AV, TV, images are severely overexposed, as if the thing was shooting in the dark. Manual still works (I recall it not to work last year) - crossing my fingers....

Example 1: decent exposure at F20, shot at F9 (shutter speed and ASA constant).
Second example is at F20, 1600 - meter opens for 5s. decent manual exposure is 0.3s

viewfinder settings before imaging are same as those taken in the image
cleaned the contacts
changed lenses
reset all menus to default
exposure comps are at '0'
...still bad

are EXIF data/ pictures still useful? There is likely something technically wrong here. Must have a freak camera. am wondering what could cause the metering to fly off the handle like that within the context of using proper Pentax equipment (nothing else). There must be something in this camera that is causing this defect to reappear.

For the second time in a year, my K5 has become only able to meter on automatic "M". Other settings end up overexposed. Last year i sent the thing to Pentax for repair, and now it happened again, which given that I don't see anything similar in these posts, may be some sort of %^&% camera defect.

Pentax 'repaired' this with a software reinstallation. Now I'm about to go on vacation and it is messed up again.. Can I do this installation myself? Is anyone out there familiar with this problem?

My old Pntx AF080C ring flash works just fine on the K5 too - 1/4 power output and stopped down.

Sigma teleconverter & Pntx mount problem

Bottom lines:

Yes indeed, the Sigma tech rep said that the company may have created the pin-hole misalignment intentionally.

1. GOOD: Unlike the two standard zooms of the Pentax kits, the rear element of the 300 mm Pentax DA stays well away from the Sigma converter.

2. GOOD: Optically, the Sigma teleconverter works well with the 300DA Pentax lens after you put it on, twist back a little so the manual lens mm adjustment pops up on the Pentax screen, click on "450mm" and turn the lens a couple of mms more until it can go no further. The combination is sharp (manual focus only).

2. BAD: The lens did not lock onto the TC. In contrast, a Sigma lens I have did lock in place. Without the locking pin in place, one stands the likelihood of hearing an expensive lens clattering on the floor, so what could have been a working solution becomes an expensive risk (yes, it will easily turn back and fall off). The only solution might be (untested, as judged seeing how little bits of tape lined up) to file off some of the advancing edge of the Sigma locking pin and it may become able to lock. The Sigma converters are $250, and modifying them blows any return warranty.

It really is disappointing to be so close and yet so far from having a decent TC.

I've been able to find a Tamron 1.4x TC and am returning the Sigma TC. Perhaps someone else can try modifying a TC locking pin and report back. Right now there's nothing else out there. Expectations of Pentax releasing their promised TC (late 2008) have evaporated, just as did the 1.7x TCs made by Hoya (Pentax' parent company). That last is a mystery given that the 300DA is made in Vietnam, the last place where 1.7s resembling the Hoya TC were being sold at a very high price...

Sigma teleconverter & Pntx mount problem

I just purchased the Pentax 300mm and a Sigma 1.4x teleconverter (TC) from B&H last week. The locking pin doesn't lock into place between the lens and the TC. I'm not sure if the hole or the pin is at fault. A Sigma lens fits fine on the front of the TC, and the 300 has no issues mounting the camera.

One could take a file to shave off the edge of the the Sigma's pin, in principle, of course, since the alignment id sooo close.

Has this issue come up before?

thanks,

1.4 sigma apo teleconverter and 300 da*

The Sigma teleconverter works fine with the latest Pentax 300mm telephoto in terms of fit and optics. I just received both but am having a problem with the converter mounting pin not snapping into place on the lens side. I don't yet know if this is an isolated issue. The pin and hole have very narrow tolerance.

I have only one lens that I can place over the teleconverter besides the 300mm and that is a Sigma lens, which clicks into place over the converter. Filing the pin down might work, but i need to keep my exchange options open while I investigate the matter...

For the record, I do want to boot Hoya in its posterior for not selling their teleconverter in the US. Perhaps Pentax's announcement in 2008 was based on that possibility, but Pentax's parent company chooses to sell the teleconverter only in Japan. Hence, given that Tamron and Hoya have both walked away, I am loathe to bash Sigma for at least supporting us.
