You may be in danger

I would not bet on that. Many new vehicles use a "fly by wire" throttle, I.E. it's a sensor/ pot controlling a computer. It is perfectly believable that this sort of lashup could fail, and absolutely conceivable that a cruise/ speed control could cause problems.

I'm not "in" to new cars. I just bought a '98 Ranger with 77K miles, the newest vehicle I own. My understanding, though, is that some new vehicles cannot be shut down quickly--with the Microshaft style start/ stop button, other than shoving in the clutch or shifting the auto to neutral--either of which may result in a blown engine.

Controversy regarding the Tonight Show

I don't care for Conan at all.

It's really too bad that Jimmy Kimmel is saddled with the stupidity over at CBS--to wit--not only is he "out of time" for the competition, but it's a PITA to "wait" for the morons on Nightline to decide to finally quit broadcasting overtime. What this means is, without continuous finger work on the hateful remote, I often miss the opening monologue--usually bar none the funniest part of the show

I "used to like" and still like parts of Lay Leno, but he always manages to drag things into the gutter. Some of his funniest stuff used to be simply off the cuff with guests.

The upshot is, I'm watching Letterman more and more, in spite of his incredibly irritating Band Leader

NBC exects deserve every single bad joke being thrown their way.

Last, if Jay is doing "that bad" what in heck does NBC think they'll replace him with? More "reality" I'd bet. WHERE is that off button?

This kind of nonsense is going to kill, or hold Linux back for almost forever. There are too darn many people going too many--uncoordinated directions--on various Linux projects.

I just made the mistake of updating to 9.10 and still have issues---my audio now sounds like a tin can and Firefox 3.5x freezes up the entire machine when trying to log into roadrunner.com---my online email.

Google leaving China?

I have no sympathy for Google. When they entered the Chinese market, there was a big flap that Google agreed to a certain amount of censorship when doing business in China. S'far's I'm concerned it's all about the money

Okay Guys, Confusing Field of View

If you were to line up a selection of lenses you would find that MOST of them are not exactly "on" the stated focal length. Because of my travels on Craigslist, Efray, and garage sales, etc, etc, I have a number of lenses, some not worth mentioning.

(One good example, shot on my Canon, is the old Tamron Adapt-a-matic 28mm, the Adaptall-2 28mm, and Olympus OM mount 28mm, all three slightly different fields)

During testing to find such things as sweet spots and comparing two lenses for sharpness and so on, I've noticed that MORE TIMES THAN NOT there is a noticeable difference in field of view.

Some DSLR bodies just have under spec slow flash sync

I'm certainly no expert, but how do we know that this is a CAMERA sync problem as opposed to a FLASH problem?

What exactly is trigger voltage?

The trigger voltage is when the flash is all charged up, ready to fire, on, is the measured voltage from the hot shoe center pin--on older flashes the ONLY pin--to ground, which is the side of the hto shoe. On older film cameras, the hotshoe was activated by a mechanically operated switch, very low current, but they would handle the high voltage--nearly 300V on some old flashes.

All modern film and digital SLRs use a solid state device of some sort to trigger the flash. To continue the long answer, "you are screwed" because none of the manufacturers typically bothered to care about you being able to use older, high voltage trigger type flashes.

EVEN WHEN A CAMERA is rated for HV, such as my Canon Xt and 40D, I DO NOT USE HV flashes because I figure that you are stressing that switch device , rating or no. The camera is expensive to repair, much more so that junking and old flash, or simply finding a used LOW volt. flash, which are prolific. Most Vivitars I've run across for example, are low volt. trigger

Even if you find a cheap flash that's dedicated for the wrong camera, it's easy--in most cases, to pull the hot shoe apart, and disconnect all but the center pin---turning the flash into a "non dedicated" unit that you can use on any camera.

Thanks I'll try to remember.

I am aware that you cannot see it in the viewfinder. I think I'm going to like this camera "for what it is" that is, I can't afford to completely switch from Canon, but I think it'll really be nice for some of my MF stuff

Reasons to own camera bodies from different brands

I got started with a canon XT, now 40D, and last bought a 30D for backup, but I wasn't happy with MF lens use--the metering in the 40D is horrid, and I DID come across some Pentax glass, along with M42 and some others, and Tamron Adaptall stuff

So I recently bought a K10D to use that all on. Shake reduction, focus confirm, and much better metering than with my Canon.

I should have mentioned I had a small 35-135mm zoom at 135, I think I was down to 1/15--1/30 or so, so I would have thought that would have instigated shake

Am I correct in assuming that I ONLY will see it in the shot, and not anything in the viewfinder? (Used to my Canon)

I've got a Tamron 60B 300mm 2.8. Maybe I'll go out tonight at dusk and play around with that thing.

Hi, name is Del, recently bought a nice used K10D to try and improve my manual glass situation. (Unfortunately I've not got a "pile" of manual glass)

I started with Canon Xt/ 350D, but the viewfinder is horrid. I "geared up" to a 40D, then bought a 30D for backup, but the metering in the 40D is awful with manual glass

I have a few PK mount lenses, and a number of Tamron Adaptall stuff, so can now have proper aperture control as well as auto stop down, and antishake.

I also have a few M42 mount, but some interfere at the flange. I'll have to fiddle, there.

I've got some Nikkors and Oly OM mount, too, so they will have to stay on the Canon.

My health is not the best--osteo/ arthritis, amoungst other 'stuff' so some playing will have to wait for better weather. I recently bought a Tamron Adaptall 60B 300mm 2.8, so am anxious to try that out.

For what it's worth, my Flickr page:

and some of the modifications and projects I've attempted

I recently bought a nice K10D (I'm a Canon Xt/ 30D/ 40D shooter) to try and improve use with manual glass

Last night I was playing with the ceiling fixture in low light, shooting at slow shutter speed with antishake on and off. On the magnified LCD, I could not see much difference. How do you tell "if it's working?" Any noise/ movement etc in the camera? I do know about the indicator in the viewfinder

Also, are there recommended split prism viewfinders available, either from Pentax or aftermarket? If so, do they affect metering as do the Canon replacements?

(Side note---I've got a pile of manual glass, but my 40D metering is almost useless--you have to chip it into submission in manual mode. With my PK and Tamron Adaptall stuff, now I can use auto aperture at the very least and get decent AV mode metering with the K10D)
