I am happy with my Pentax K1, original version.

I have all the kit I want, and won't be upgrading or updating now. I have stopped looking at new gear reviews, and am content. :-)

I have tested my three Sigma lenses, the 12-24mm f4.5-5.6 DG EX, the 24-70mm f2.8 DG EX HSM and the 150-500mm f5.6-6.3 APO HSM on my new K-1.

They ALL work fine, quiet fast autofocus, no camera freezing or other apparent issues.:)

Pentax Flucard available in Canada

My Flu Card came today, (the proper 16GB Flu Card Pro for Pentax K-3, just to be clear.)

The packing.. substantial, perhaps overly so, but whatever...! Once it WAS unpacked I unfolded the multi language quick set up sheet and carefully followed the instructions to the letter.
I had already found and downloaded the Flucard set up and User Guides from the Pentax Ricoh site and had a read, through so I already had an idea.

I set the auto power off feature of the camera to 10 minutes so as not to get disconnected while I play around.

Turn camera off, insert Flucard into SD slot 2,(closest to the back, marked "2"..) close cover, switch camera on, the card gives a quiet beep then a series of quiet beeps and a visual indication on the camera rear screen as the Flucard activates.

I know my windows smartphone would not be usable for Flucard (yet?) so have given into my kids and bought one of the less expensive Android OS Tablets, a Tesco Hudl 7" tablet for £119.

I fired that up and opened the WiFi settings and there was the Flucard, clicked on it and selected 'connect' and connect it did!

I then opened the chrome browser and typed into the address bar http://pentax and it connected. a small confirmation box that "the default settings were set" appeared and I clicked OK then I tapped an arrow twice as instructed and the menu screen appeared.

(NB add the Pentax Flucard to the browser favourites so it's a one click find next time)

I was viewing the tablet in vertical position (recommended) and clicked on "remote capture" and there it was, live view on the tablet, a focus point, basic settings and a shutter button.

It all worked, fairly swiftly, and as advertised, from all around a decent sized room.

I might be easily impressed, I may still have a childlike fascination with gadgets, but it was almost like magic!

As usual on Pentax Forums, there's always someone moaning and putting Pentax down, BUT ISN'T THIS THE FIRST DSLR WITH OPTIONAL WIRELESS TETHERING THAT DOES NOT NEED SPECIAL SOFTWARE OR EXPENSIVE HARDWARE? No trailing wires, no clip on attachments, no big laptops, just a special SD card and a standard Android or Apple Tablet or device which many people already have anyway?

I bought the Flucard and a budget Android tablet for £219 British Pounds total and it just works great! Shouldn't this be something we can shout about?

Isn't this another classic understated Pentax First, in the true tradition of the brand?

The Pentax Flucards are on sale now in the UK, and SRS Microsystems currently have the best price at £99, and some have been posted out already.

At present they work with WiFi equipped computers and devices that have Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Apple Safari browsers installed, which effectively ruled out Windows 8 smartphones.

Mozilla's Firefox for Windows 8 is being released for download on 18th March, hopefully there will be a version for windows phone to follow?

I thought the idea of the Flucard was that it shows the Live View image on the phone's screen, so a tilt and swivel screen is a redundant concept?

People have moaned about no Tilt screen or built in Wi-Fi for the Pentax K-3 BUT if the FluCard idea works than it is a better option that either, and puts the K-3 ahead of competitors.

ALSO I saw it was supposed to work with Apple iPhones and Android smartphones, but being a Microsoft fan I have a Windows 8 Smartphone by Nokia.

Does anyone know if it will work with a Windoows phone too? If there is "no installation, it works in a browser" surely it should work with any WiFi enabled smartphone and it's browser????

My best camera + lenses......ever!

I have posted elsewhere, and think I should add here that the K-5 with Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 and Pentax 50-135mm f2.8 is the best camera and lenses I have ever had.

I think I am getting image quality as good as, or probably better than my best attempts with Pentax film gear and prime lenses in the 1970s.

I have sold the (not "Limited") Fixed Focal length primes I had been hanging onto in case Pentax ever made a 'full frame' small DSLR (Has everyone forgotten the Pentax 645D?) as direct comparisons showed I could equal their image quality with just two good zoom lenses.

This does not make me some 'Super Photographer' but it means I can trust my kit and can concentrate on the remaining variable....the dope holding the camera!

I think some people are missing the point of this camera, STOP thinking of it as a Digital SLR, and compare it with, say, a Leica M9....compare it for size, compare it for weight, consider the live viewfinder that everyone understands over the quirky rangefinder that not everyone likes....then battery life, now very importantly the HUGE choice of lenses and then compare the PRICE.
Remember how popular the boxy rectangular rangefinder and viewfinder cameras have been with the general public down the years, (who were put off by SLRs) how many millions were sold and used, THEN take a fresh look at THIS camera.
It really COULD be a winner if the marketing is right!
