Just to clear the air I started with a Pentax *ist DL & twin kit lenses. Then I progressed to a K10 then a K7 but now my style has changed quite a lot. Essentially I was perfectly happy with pentax until at Uni I tried out alot of other gear and found what I was missing out on.
The Swedish chick gives me great results but shes more of a weekend girl not really practical shooting analoge for jobs etc.
I now want fast glass, fast auto focusing & greater quality.
I feel guilty about leaving pentax. But I'm not sure I like their direction. They seem to be toying with young modern (horrendous) looking cameras when I think they need to jump on the retro styling band wagon. They already have the lenses to offer something unique.
On another note that really bugs me is Pentax don't sell themselves properly. For example this lens has a magnetic lens cap! And a built in lens hood! But no mention of that on the website. The marketing people need to sit down with the gear and play! PENTAX - smc PENTAX DA 35mm F2.8 Macro Limited |

Pentax I'm breaking up with you: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/222582-pentax-im-breaking-up-you.html
What I like coming from a Pentax K7 to a Canon 6D:
- Detail & Dynamic Range (Full Frame)
- Creamy Bokeh
- Amazing Low Light Performance (I'm sure the K5II is almost as good though)
- High Quality Video With Manual Controls & Timecode (also ability to do 50fps at 720p)
- Fast SILENT Autofocus (DA* SDM was far too slow!)
- Built in GPS & Wifi (Its pretty awesome having files auto tag their exact spot)
What I miss:
- Ergonomics
- Lens Design (for instance the BUILT IN LENS HOOD on the 35mm Macro LTD lens)
- Full Weather Sealing
- Sensor Shake Reduction (as opposed to built into lenses)
- Low Price of Lenses & Cameras

Pentax I've been with you for over 7 years. You taught me a lot.
Together we grew stronger.
We've travelled the world.
You helped me get my first commission.
Then my first publication.
We talked about the future but you didn't prevale.
Out one day I fell in love with Hasselblad the gorgeous swedish lass.
Sure she was old but she knew a thing or two.
From that moment on I knew something had to change.
Pentax I'm sorry I'm breaking up with you.
I've found another. She's calls herself the Canon 6D.
She's not much of a looker but her attention to detail is truly incredible.
Pentax I'll miss your charm & good looks.
Pentax I'm sorry I'm breaking up with you.

What I hope for is a pentax full frame camera & an update to the da limited prime lenses.
I think these lenses could be a much bigger attraction point for Pentax if they marketed them properly. Just look at the success of the Fuji x100 camera with retro styling and also this new metal sigma 30mm 1.4 lens.

Its been a while since i posted on here..
Just wondering does anyone actually know a date for when Pentax will make announcements for whatever new cameras they're releasing? Some time ago a few of you were kind enough to pm me some specs & images before the announcement of the K7.
I'm looking to either:
1)sell all my pentax gear: K7, kit lens, da* 50-135mm, 12-24mm f4, 35mm ltd.
2)buy canon full frame either a 5D mkii or a 6D with a 24-105 f4 to start with then maybe a 2nd hand 24mm f1.4
3) invest in Pentax full frame camera & lenses.
My main objective is higher detail and shallower depth of field for portraits etc.

Hmm to me looking at the end of that first video it looks like the k-5 still has the jello/rolling shutter...but I hope I am wrong. The k-7 is aweful for it!

Thanks very much.
I wish pentax would give us the option to enable the screw driven mode instead of sdm if we wanted it.

Hey,
I just wondered if someone who's lucky enough to have just got a k-5 and has access to a k-7 aswell if they could do a test comparing the sdm focusing speeds.
This weekend I was shooting at an event and almost gave up using the 50-135mm sdm on my k-7 because it was so slow to focus in low light, during the day it was fine. So at night I opted for the 35mm macro f2.8 which worked wonders.
But anyway if someone could do a test it'd be much appreciated :)
Many thanks

Looking very very good! Is there a noticeable improvement with sdm over a k7?

Has anyone specifically asked a pentax employee about the possibility of turning off sdm and using screwdrive instead?
I don't really understand the improvements to autofocus if my most expensive lens can't make use of the improvements...

and so the moral of the story is to not buy not the first camera pentax release with a different look or body style but the second as it is always far better..

Falk can you please ask if sdm af speed is increased with all this new tech in the K-5 and I assume not so then ask them why they don't create a menu to choose sdm or screwdrive to get the much faster focusing on their most expensive lenses.
It's a bit of a joke that now their cheaper lenses focus faster than any of their premium DA* line.

Having seen fujifilms x100 camera I hope that pentax too will develop one very similar with the electronic & optical viewfinder.
- Weathersealing
- Fast f2 interchangeable lenses: a wide, normal and telephoto.
- amazing dymanic range
- low noise sensor
- hd videos
But above all retro style

So ok it's only been a day but it seems as if pentax only okay the specs yesterday.
Its been a pretty poor launch so far. Lots of spec confusions. Not many samples. Not many answers.
Where's the info regarding pentax's future direction?
and lastly if this thing is to ship in october then surely they should've had it out in the hands of some pro pentax shooters?
Learn from nikon and canon. It's fairly easy marketing and it wouldn't cost that much.
Give someone a new camera and lenses before a release date and get them to produce a short video and some images.
Maybe a travel photographer or an outdoors photographer etc.

If pentax won't do manual video controls then maybe they could implement something like this (taken from nikon d7000):
Flicker reduction function reduces the flicker effect that might occur under fluorescent or mercury vapor lighting while using Live View or D-Movie. You can select 50Hz or 60Hz, according to the local power frequency where you are shooting.
I guess the iso noise should be pretty non existent compared to the k-7's video.

with my k-7 the main reason for wanting full manual was to control the awful iso noise but hopefully with this newer camera it won't be such an issue.

I was told that it doesn't support manual via web chat support:
I'd much prefer manual controls over af in video

Please pentax give us k-7 and k-5 users manual video controls.
I want to set or limit my iso and shutter speeds for visual effects.
I don't care about af in video!!!!
