In case no one noticed, I’ve been absent of late. And given this thread is where I have posted (by a very large margin) the bulk of my interactions in this community, this seems like the most likely place to drop this.
Mrs. Racer 2.0, the love of my life, the sole reason for my existence for the last 27 years, passed away quietly while taking a nap February 7, 2024, while I was at work. I found her upon arriving home after work at just after 11 pm local time. The medical examiner estimated the time of death around 4 or 5 pm.
Wednesday was always cleaning day, and she had vacuumed, swept and mopped, cleaned the bathrooms, washed the laundry. In the refrigerator was pie crust dough, diced chicken and vegetables for making chicken pot pie. It appears as though she was about to take a shower, but may have felt the need to take a brief rest first, lying on the couch and watching the television.
That is where I found her, appearing asleep.
I met Mrs. Racer 2.0 in 1997, when she took work at Snohomish County Public Utility District #1, the local electric utility. She had just left her second husband and was moving to the next chapter of her life. Scheduled for some outpatient surgery I needed a driver. She overheard me asking coworkers in the vehicle maintenance shop to help, and noticed that everyone was making excuses, so she offered to help.
The day of the surgery she drove me home, made sure I had some water and the pain meds, then offered to look in on me after her day at work. She dropped in each day after work for several days, and I finally offered to let her crash at my place rather than go to her sister’s place.
She never left.
For Christmas I bought her a dresser, as she had been living out of a suitcase.
At some point we had conversation regarding our relationship, and chose to remain domestic partners, as she had experienced two failed marriages, and I had failed once myself. We lived as husband and wife, sharing all the things that couple do. It worked very well. Our partnership lasted 27 years.
In 2004 we purchased 6.17 acres of riverfront property on the South Fork of the Stillaguamish River between Arlington and Granite Falls, and I sold my property and house near Lake Goodwin. We designed and built a custom home of our own collaborative design, moving into it in June of 2008. Lorna lived in that home with me until her passing on February 7, 2024.
She didn’t want a funeral, he wishes were to be cremated, and her ashes scattered in warm climates, tropical beaches and mountains. He daughter, son and I will each be taking a share of her remains for scattering. He son lives in Hawaii, her daughter in Florida, but I will need to plan a trip somewhere
There is a huge empty space where she once was. The pain is indescribable. Nearly two weeks on and I still weep for my love.

Pentax Q7 with #06 telezoom. 45mm ISO 200 F2.8 1/80. Wish I'd had camera set to ISO 400 but wasn't expecting to see a raccoon when looking over the bridge side.
Thanks for looking,

Four days is amazing.
Hopefully we are all still going and remain literate enough to make contributions.
On another thread Racer said he acquired a replacement eye lens after cataract surgery. He said he prefers the golden tinge of the cataracted eye over the clear colour of the new one. Clearly, next time he should ask for a Pentax lens made of thorium glass. Then over time it will go golden unless he goes outside too often.

I never use turn indicators at roundabouts. Everyone is going the same way, in our case to the right. Turning right goes without saying.
What grinds my gears is morons that can't figure them out. They come to a complete stop even when there is no other traffic in the circle, or when someone has just entered at the opposite side.
Stupid people.
Oh, and most times a roundabout is is nothing more than a chicane for me.

No theme combined with amazing entries made this a difficult contest to judge. After spending the day viewing all the entries I finally selected Port Of Everett by tuco as the winner. The light blue boat looks great against the warm hue sunset. Very 3D and natural. Congratulations tuco.
All the entries were great. You guys made it tough on me. Thanks for participating and making the contest fun.
Looking forward to tuco's contest.
Thanks,

The tractors and trailers should all be getting annual inspections, but they are only as good as the mechanic who is doing them and signing the inspection report.
When I was a mechanic I refused to sign off on a couple of trucks, and was threatened by my employer. A phone call to the union steward and it became a non issue. The shop tried to get another mechanic to sign off the equipment, and he refused also.
So they spent the money to make repairs, or is one case, scrapped the trailer.
And this was at the public utility I worked at.
Private shops, especially non union shops are another matter.
Not everyone thinks about their personal reputation, especially when they aren't getting paid very well.

Oh WOW UncleVanya, that's a big surprise. Thanks for the honour. Now I have to think up a theme this evening because tomorrow we have an all out electric in my area. They have to work on the electric network so we have to plug out all that have to be plugged in to work all day. So no Freezers, no fridges, no tv, no pc, no cable telephones, no lights, no machines, nothing. Just like the very old days LOL. So in stead of sitting here doing nothing, I decided to give myself a present and drive over to my regular fishing pond tonight and see if I can catch some trout. We don't have wild trout overhere.
So I have to do some thinking and let you know as soon as possible.
Bart, congrats, I truly thought your beautiful black and red would win. I also like KWB's orange/rust very much.

Here's hoping I've got the Google Photos embed working right this time.
Olympus TG-6 f/8 1/800s ISO100 35mm equivalent 25mm.
For what should be obvious reasons, I wasn't game to use my Pentax DSLR for this image. |

Alright people, time is up, thank you very much for your submission(s)! I was happy to see so many strong entries. My job was tough, and therefore this competition was very enjoyable. In the end, my eyes always returned to a couple of pictures.
Honorable mention goes to shyrsio's "my little boy". The boy's face is barely lit, just enough to make me think that I can kind of see his facial expression, but not really, so I keep coming back and guess. That's the power of this picture to me. Underexposure, even though it wasn't intended, added great mystery and drama to the picture. Congrats, shyrsio!
The winner of this month's competition is...
UncleVanya's clock in Paris! Dark, backlit world gives this picture a dream-like quality, and the running kid is a nice addition. But there are other great elements here. Overall symmetry. Bright part of the frame working as an inside frame for shadowy people. Pillars/walls and floor tiles present the lines converging to the clock. These geometric lines are in good contrast to the curved line formed by walking people from right to the center, completed by the kid running to the left. Congrats, UncleVanya!
UncleVanya, it's your turn. Thank you all again, see you in the next round!

Jims seems to have logged out. Right, here goes: Who would have thought "The Thread" would have made it to 100,000 posts?
So, today, we remember our friends who are no longer with us. Firstly, Rupert, who actually went by Jim. James Williams was a regular poster here and often regaled us with some really funny life stories. And a few pretty serious life stories. Jim passed away on 19 December 2017. Jim / Rupert often shared tales from a squirrel's perspective and Otis, Festus and the other squirrels. Due to that, you'll see "The Otis Appreciation Society" badges from time to time, with some of our regular members.
James Williams (Rupert)
And then there was Bob Correll, who was our resident Weber BBQ expert. Bob was likewise a regular contributor here. He passed away on 31 March 2022.
Bob had a collection of Weber BBQs and was an all round nice guy.
Bob Correll
Both are sorely missed.

I don't think of snow as an advantage or disadvantage. It is, to me, just part and parcel of the area you live in.
I've always lived in snow country...both in Alberta and Manitoba. I don't mind. In fact I love having four distinct seasons...

The grain, color, texture and organic features of wood always looks great. After working to make something useful, and finished with an oil or stain to enhance the natural beauty, one can sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labor.
