Anybody attempt lens dismantling?

The lens I'm thinking about violating is a Auto Sears 135mm 2.8, possibly made by Tokina I've been told. It's completely manual. It was an ebay cheapo-cheapo so if I can't put it back together I'll put one of those spring snakes in it like the practical joke cans and have someone hand me the lens and remove the cap - Zing!

Hello all.

I am going to be taking apart a lens that I got cheap and has some fungus and a painfully slow apature return. Of course, I don't have a clue what I'm doing, except for the fact that I'm fairly technically savvy and have dismantled just about everything at one time or another.

I'd appreciate any tips or assistance or horror stories, etc., that you've got about your attempts at lens repair.

Thanks!
Tom

Just looked at that pop-up diffuser - it's a pretty cool looking item. Gonna get me one of those - $3.50 is dirt cheap.

Rupi - I bought a snap-on diffuser for my Metz 48 on Ebay (from Taiwan) for $9.99 including shipping when I couldn't find one at a reasonable cost here. It fits perfectly and works, well, like you would expect it to work.

Here's one where I used a diffuser to get a nice, soft effect.

Would you buy a refurbished K10D?

I bought a "refurbished", "salesperson-use model" K110D on Ebay for $185 with the kit lens. It sure looked brand spanking new to me. I even got the full warrantee. The only difference I could find was a sticker on the box that said "Refurbished". I think some of the "refurbished" issue is related to items that they cannot sell new because the box was opened at some point, or the unit was sent to a sales person or a store and returned, or some other issue that does not allow them to sell it as New.

I have bought refurbished electronics for decades and have never had a problem.

Great information. I already have the 80-320 Pentax lens so I've got the range mostly covered, but I am a sucker for a bargain and like the looks of this lens. Thanks again!

Well, that makes sense. I have had some trouble finding any information about the Takumar version. I guess I'll skip it, unless I can get it for el-cheapo $$.

Thanks for the answer!

It sure looks like they are - possibly different ages/versions of the same lens?
Thanks for your help.

Love your photos. Are you a birder? (sounds like a stupid question). What lens are you using for those photos - they are great!!!
