Without disassembly I cannot tell but a return spring problem does seem plausible. I might be taking an unreasonable risk by trying myself... ---------- Post added 02-22-2023 at 12:37 PM ----------
No, a repair in 2017 was for a barrel alignement problem giving a hard spot and noisy clack sound at the end of the zoom range. This lens has had plenty of problems but when it doesn't it is reasonably sharp and even-handed. Will look into a repair estimate. Thanks for your help!

Thanks. Indeed, there is no tension on the lever, no snap back whatsoever, just loosely floating within the slot. This is contrary to my other lenses, for which this lever definitely has tension and snaps back...So, good call.
Can I conclude that this requires a repair by a Pentax-authorized service center?
Thanks again for the help. Brgds.

Hello all,
Have had a DA 16-85 for several years now and although it was repaired once, it has generally been a good lens. However, recently it has been producing grossly overexposed shots on 2 different camera bodies. I have reset the camera bodies, checked and double checked all settings, made sure FW was up to date. I still get these incredibly overexposed shots.
Does this type of problem sometimes occur in a lens? Should it sent for service or is there something to check and test that I may have overlooked?
Using other Pentax lenses on either of the 2 bodies do not produce overexposures.
Thanks for your insight/advice.
Brgds.

There will still be 12 long months in 2019...but we're used to (or disgusted by) waiting for a new Pentax APS-C ...
Maybe rain, maybe snow. maybe 2019, maybe no.

I can guarantee :
1. You'll never need all of those lenses
2. You'll wonder why you brought what you finally bring
3. You'll wish you brought a zoom and a prime only
4. Whatever you end up with, you'll get tired of carrying it around.
Take as little as possible and enjoy your trip.
Just got back from 15 days in Japan with only K-5II and 16-85. Was already overkill and entirely sufficient.

Also think that an infinitesimal update of the FF is not what most Pentax buyers wanted. This is disturbing, worrisome and disappointing (except of course to 29 people who were hoping for this...) ---------- Post added 02-22-2018 at 12:08 AM ----------
The big question on the K-3 III is "when will the forseeable future occur" ?

Anymore than two lenses will be a regrettable burden. 15 and 70.

Well, it's just a sensor test measure with subsequent results. A camera is more than its sensor...What about a similar test and ranking on AF performance? Only one Pentax and absolutely no Canon models? Major grain of salt here, but good news for the K-1 (in terms of sensor measurement and cost!).

Long-time faithful Pentax user, these days I'm so fed up with their AF that I'm seriously considering jumping ship to Nikon. Not happy to admit that, but I need precise AF in extreme situations. Pentax AF requires an enormous amount of effort and concentration to compensate for its mediocrity. Will wait for the ever-elusive K-3 succesor or a new FF if demonstrably better AF is available...

Yes, you have a factory reset option in the menu of the camera. Do that, remove and fully charge the battery.

I nearly had the same problem with mine. The zoom rotation became stiff and then developed an extra "notch". I had to send it for out of warranty repair here in France. I proceeded to whine and complain and Ricoh finally paid for the parts while I paid for labor. It still cost me some 200 euros. I immediately took it to India on vacation where it performed correctly, Good luck with the repair.

I don't want my K-5IIs to die anytime soon either. But if and when it does, I want the K-3II/APS-C successor to be available!

Just confirming that JPEG setting will allow those options to be selectable as was already mentioned. That K-5IIs is one hell of a camera and produces excellent images. If you don't shoot RAW, I'd recommend trying (if this is not the case now) using LightRoom for your RAW images. You can tweak, enhance and improve your images in a spectacular fashion. Shooting RAW and post-processing in LR turns drab photos into keepers! Enjoy that camera, it's a total winner.

It doesn't exist...anymore than a "K-3 Mark 2". It's a typical thing that many Englishmen and others "invent" to distinguish between models or production years from any manufacturer. I recall a story about my Jadis tube amplifiers, which are made here in France and sold around the world. I had an issue and checked the hifi forums for this amplifier. The good folks from the UK had advice about the Mark 2, the Mark 3 and the Mark 4. TOTALLY PUZZLED, as the manufacturer Jadis did not distinguish models in this manner, I called them, and the founder BLEW A FUSE and said "WE NEVER MADE ANY MARK THIS OR THAT, they are all the same amplifier".
So, if I make my calculations correctly, I own a K-30 Mark 1 and a K-5 II Mark 2?

My understanding is that the ban is FROM these countries; Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia. Additionally, "devices measuring more than 16cm in length, 9.3cm in width, or 1.5cm depth will be banned from the cabin and need to be placed into hold luggage and checked-in before going through security." The UK is now implementing it as well. Going TO these countries remains a mystery...If the idea is to dissuade nasty people from putting explosive material in computers and iPads, you'd think a shoe or a camera lens would work for that as well. More detail is needed from the government. In the meantime, airlines will customize things according to their own viewpoint, as long as the computers are forbidden. Finally, the thought of checking camera equipment as bagage is not a pleasant one.
