I am not sure that I understand the feature / benefit to this idea. I am not particularly against this but don’t see the value. Please explain!

K20D to K7

I had been looking to purchase a new K-20 last fall but found that I was "late in the game". The K-7 had been out only a couple of months and I really didn't want a first of production. However the K-20's were all gone from the reliable vendors.
My fears were unfounded and my appreciation of the K-7 is great.
I also have very large hands and have to say that it fits me better than any other camera I have ever owned. It is compares in weight to my Old Yashika TL ELECTRO but not intolerable.

I desperately need a decent ultra wide angle zoom and just popped for a Sigma 10-20mm F 4.0. Now wondering if I should have bought the Tamron!

SDM issues DA*16-50mm

I clearly understand that the specific problem(s) of the 16-50mm has nothing to do with the question I posed to Pentax about my 18-55 WR.

However the bigger question to me is why they have not fixed an on going and well documented problem. It sounds like they are just sticking their head in the sand so to speak on the 16-50mm.

The problem will go away...(when all of the loyal patrons go away to C K or O).

Perhaps it is the same over at Nikon and Canon or even worse. ??

I suppose that I am just turning into an old horse that remembers how very important customer service and customer satisfaction used to be.

The K-7 is still the correct camera for me. In the mean-time I am going to give them a run for the money!

SDM issues DA*16-50mm

With this thread and many others I am beginning to wonder if I didn't pull the trigger too quickly when I decided to purchase Pentax this time round (K-7).

The 18-55mm WR I purchased at the same time as the Body had what I thought was a lot of movement in the barrel laterally. At least .010” in any direction.

None of my old lenses from my film cameras had these issues except for a highly used wonderful Yashika TL Electro. It was used constantly and subjected to severe abuse.

ALL of my lenses were manual focused for all of my cameras until the purchase of the K-7.

Adorama immediately exchanged the lens but the replacement isn't much better than the original with respect to the barrel slack.

Conversations with Pentax directly suggested and convinced me that the barrel play or lateral excursions are quite normal on AF lenses.
I still find that very hard to believe but coming from 35 years of shooting MF glass I had no room to argue. Also when handling several Nikon and Canon current models they seemed to have the same slop in the barrel.

My decision toward Pentax was influenced in part by my collection of glass for Pentax as well as performance to dollar ratio of the K-7 or K-20 compared to the competition.

The DA 16-50mm was one of the lenses that I was going to purchase but held off due to posts and threads similar to this thread.

I still require an ultra wide and am looking at the DA 12-24mm from Pentax but am very hesitant at this point due to service issues that many Pentax users are cackling about here and abroad.

My primary income is not derived directly through the use of my photographic equipment but does supplement it.

The thought that maybe I should have held off a little longer has been buzzing around my head for the last month...sure hope the buzz goes away….

Buyers that don't read..

Sorry to hear of the failure in communications...

I have been bartering delicate and (read) expensive electronics and radio equipment for decades via computer and news print etc with only one or two difficulties in all that time. And even those were resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.

The forums include E-bay since it's inception, qth.com,qrz.com, yellow sheet trader, Hemmings motor news, craigslist and so many others that have come and gone.

I have been a buyer, a seller and a trader.

It sounds like you tried to do what you thought may have been best with regard to full disclose and perhaps there seemed no other way to communicate with the buyer.

Buyers often fail to acknowledge what they have actually read! They may even read it three or four times and not get it. I am sure that there are volumes written in psycho babble about this phenomena!

With this in mind I would have gone one step further before shipping to the buyer or even accepting his one cent of payment only because you already knew that the lens was not in the proper category.

(One of the reasons I don't do much with e-bay anymore and pay-pal. It has short circuited my communications with a buyer and interfered in the process too severely. E-bay is not seller friendly at all any longer and is extremely buyer biased regardless of how much of a dead beat you may have as a winner. Not suggesting that in this case of course.)

Given your circumstances. I would have insisted on a telephone conversation at the the very least making sure that the buyer knew exactly what he was buying and why it was listed the way it was (not choice or category).

I might have even insisted in on a written acknowledgement (e-mail at least) that the lens was not the Tamron etc and he/she understood this.

It has gotten to be a bit ridiculous the lengths that I have gone but it has always let me sleep at night! More than once I lost the transaction as a result of the "extended communication" but I know that I would have never heard the end of it had I just let the idiot continue.

The only thing I may lose is time but often well worth the price instead of dealing with a combative ignorant buyer.

Good luck to you and your resolve.

I am looking forward to using the K-7 most all of the year. The Wisconsin weather is just one of the many reasons that I opted for the K-7 weather resistance.

There is a lot of photographic opportunity between the gray of winter here! I would hate to be stopped just because of LCD or batteries etc.

Used to shoot my K1000 at sub zero temps. Not a good idea but I got away with it many times.

Get the snow shoes out bucko!

Faulty lens from Adorama

I recently purchased a K-7 and also the 18-55m WR lens.
The order was filled, shipped and received in a very short period of time.

The brand new lens appeared (to me) be defective in that it had what I thought was an excessive amount of lateral play or movement in the barrel.
Adorama issued a return shipping tag immediately, and returned a new lens to me within 10 days of their receipt. Postage was on them bith directions.

I find that absolutely superb service today and will purchase again from them without question.
I am "old school" and have a lot of glass around here and some of those 35mm manual focus lenses do not have any play in the barrel excpet for an extremely well used 50mm prime Yashica.

In speaking to modern AF lens users barrel play is normal and accepatable to some nebulous level.

Further uinderstand that a Class 10 is rated at 10mb/sec.
Sandisk class 10 SDHC is rated to 30mb/sec.
Other companies may only go to 10MB ( a class 10). So again, watch what you are getting for your money. Speed is the key here in addition to the capacity of the media.

I have been skulking around this forum for a little while now and am truly glad to have signed on!
There is an incredible amount of information from pros' and amateurs alike.
I am a serious amatuer and hobbist though I find my photographic skills being put to task more and more as my work changes.

My history with Pentax goes back to my days in Southeast Asia (1974-1976) with the climax of Vietnam and points forward till about 1999 when I started to play with digital.

I have owned many digital cameras of the point and shoot catagory and all have left me wishing for more ( more akin to what I cut my teeth on: Pentax, Yashica, Minolta, and other 35mm film cameras).

About March of this year I became serious about advancing my craft with much higher quality equipment.
DSLR's had been way to pricey and problematic to even consider for me untill the advaent of the K20D and even the D90 Nikon.

While I plodded along and decided to make the plunge with Pentax again with the K20D, dealers were selling out as I was attempting to purchase.

After further study I thought that it might be nice to have the latest and greatest from Pentax so I sprung for the K-7. I don't think that I made a mistake and even got the Camera at well under list and only slightly more than they are selling for today.

It was a close call between the Nikon D90 and the K-7 but the K-7 one out on published features and rugged build. Not to mention that I could still fully use all of my old glass. I did purchase the new 18-55 WR lens too by the way.

Anyway, that is where I am at with this and I am looking forward to learning much and maybe even teaching a thing or two as I progress!

Thanks for the Forum and welcome!!

I had a similar mis-understanding of the Class of operation and subsequently purchased a Class 6 Trancend Card.
I had made the presumption that it's (Class 6) speed was similar to the Sandisk Ultra II that has a read write of up to 15mb/s. A class 6 card actually is only good to 6mb/sec and anything faster is a bonus (read again you get what you pay for!).

The K-7 requires at minimum 10mb/sec read write for full HD video. In speaking to Pentax two days ago the only ones that they have tested and approved so far are Panasonic (believe it or not!) Sandisk and Toshiba for the K-7 video. I asked if they have run Lexar through the paces yet and he said not at this time though he stated that Lexar is all he used personnaly.

Regardless the author of this thread as well as I and all others need to get a better grip on "Class of service" with respect to the media.

I have since decided to go to a class 10 Sandsk at 30mb/sec read write speed.

It is early for me but I have to comment that I am thrilled so far with the K-7
