Can you recommend a good "budget" tripod?

I would look for a used Bogen-Manfrotto. They're solid and bulletproof, in my experience, though a bit on the heavy side.

K5 questions & mirror flop

Hi there.

Thinking about picking up a used K-5 body as an upgrade to my K-x. Just a few questions, tho:

1) How much better is the low light image quality at high ISO than the K-x?

2) Is the autofocusing better/faster?

3) How common is the mirror flop issue with the K5?

4) Does the K5-II also suffer from mirror flop?

I had considered the K30/K50, but the seemingly common occurrence of the aperture block failure has put me off that idea.

Thanks! :-)

I use an m39 Russian Industar 61 LD model 55mm f2.8 on my Q with very good results. Its cheap, small, and looks like it was made for the Q. Also, there's no fringing at all which is a rarity. It's also pretty sharp stopped down a couple of notches. F8 is the sweet spot.

You might try KEH. You gotta have some patience with eBay. It's real hit or miss.

It is... $40-$50 is the usual going rate for one. Only caveat is it's manual all the way unless you have the pricey Adaptall PK-A adapter.

I have the Tamron (Promaster branded) 18-200 and have been quite happy with it for a walkaround superzoom. Got these with it:

The Tamron 23A is the "bang for the buck" king of the tele zooms, as far as I'm concerned. It's roughly equal in IQ to the Pentax DA 55-300 at a fraction of the cost. Plus, it has a really useful macro mode. I have the DA 55-300 and still use the Tamron from time to time.

Looking at this Dolica tripod as a backup

Howdy all.

I'm looking at the following Dolica tripod as a slightly lighter and cheaper alternative when I don't want to take my more expensive Manfrotto/FLM Centerball combo. Is it a good deal? Here it is:

http://www.amazon.com/Dolica-AX620B100-62-Inch-Proline-Tripod/dp/B001D60LG8/...eywords=dolica

I would be using a Bogen 3028 head on it rather than the one that comes on it. A used Bogen tripod would be great, but the ones I've spotted lately are either really banged up with issues, or more money than the Dolica.

Is there a better cheap and decent option for a tripod? I just need the legs.

Cheers,
Bob :-)

I've been using BR $20 knockoffs for several years with no trouble. I once had the chance to compare it directly with an actual BR strap, and was hard pressed to spot any difference.

The *ist DS is a nice camera, as long as you keep the ISO down. The K-x has a lot less noise at higher ISOs, double the resolution of the *ist DS, and is available for $150 used. I'm still using the K-x and am quite happy with it. That said, if you can afford it, the K-5 is even better.

LOL... I am at the bottom of that particular curve. :-P

---------- Post added 03-01-2015 at 04:22 PM ----------

To the best of my knowledge, all of the 433Ds work with Pentax, but it's mostly technique and diffusion of flash that get the job done. There are other flashes that would work as well as the Sunpaks.

Buying a separate bounce flash is the way to go. And you don't have to spend a lot. I have several old Sunpak 433D flash units I bought for $6 to $30 each. Learn how to use them properly and it won't look like you used a flash.

All of these were done with cheap Sunpaks, $6 umbrella diffusers and cheap PT-04 radio triggers. There's a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, you'll like using flash.

Just be careful if you buy an older flash. Some of them have a high trigger voltage that can fry your camera. Here's a trigger voltage chart. You'll want to keep it under 24 volts for Pentax. I play it safe and go with 12 volts and under.

Good luck & have fun!
Bob :-)

On one hand, I don't envy the turd-polishing you've had to deal with... but on the other, it is nice to see Tammy Faye Bakker's makeup person has found work.
