How to deactivate SDM and allow for screw drive autofocus with DA* 16-50mm f/2.8

Thanks for all your help everybody. I'll probably try another approach over the weekend, though I was hoping to make all the changes in camera where I can make them 1 by 1 and go back and correct 1 by 1 if necessary. Interestingly, after I made the changes to the first 16 addresses, tried the "half modified" lens on my K5, found that it didn't auto focus at all and then returned the first 16 addresses to their original settings, I found that the lens actually worked better than it did when I started tinkering with it. Hmmm. Not sure what any of that means.

Thanks, Randy, I'll give it a try. I did try out-of-camera edits before but couldn't make them work on my Mac (the only computer I have). But I'll give it another shot.

Yes, I did make the changes in camera. I used a K10, version 1.1.0.. Worked perfectly to deactivate my 16-50.

(Oops. Just realized that I gave some incorrect info: The last address that I was able to change was 03E3 (the 16th address on the list). When I tried to change the "3" in the second column to a "4" to get to the 17th address (0423), it instead went back to "0". It appears that 03xx is the highest address that I can get to directly.)

A couple of years ago I converted my 16-50 after it failed and was repaired twice. I did the conversion using a K10 and manually changed the appropriate addresses - 16 of them - from C0 to 80. My 50-135 is now acting up and I just tried to convert it using the same technique I used for my 16-50. Everything worked perfectly through address 03E3 (the 16th one on the list), but then I could not get to the next address (0423). The highest digit I could bring up in the second column is "2" then it reverts back to "0" instead of "3" Do you have any idea why this happens of how to get around it? As it stands now, I can change the first 16 addresses but can't access the last 16. Appreciate any help you can provide.

Realized one more thing that's important. Be sure to go to LENS ROM READ/WRITE and not EEPROM READ/WRITE. First time I did this I made that mistake and instead of seeing the expected designation of C0 at the specified addresses I got something strange. For example, at 0023, instead of showing C0, it showed EBEB. And at 0063, instead of showing C0, it showed F2F2. Now that I think about this, I guess the back up should be from LENS ROM as well and not from EEPROM as I indicated previously. On the other hand, changing the code item by item probably doesn't really need a back up since you can always go back to each address you changed manually and change it back to C0 from whatever you may have mistakenly changed it to.

Stumbled across it twice in this forum. Once from djseeram though he was talking about a K10 with v1.30 and once from Adam though he was talking about using this approach to get into debug mode to fix focusing problems. I didn't realize it would work without going into debug until I found "Lens ROM read/write" in the menu and tried it. Surprisingly simple ... though I can't count the number of hours I spent failing to make any of the other options work. Hopefully what you're doing will save lots of people lots of work because the problem sure doesn't seem to be going away. My 16-50 was repaired twice and then I did this after the 3rd failure. I expect my 50-135 to fail soon. Its showing the early signs.

I just deactivated my lens as follows:

Turned camera on holding "Play" and "OK" It shows "Firmware v1.10"
Within 5 seconds pressed "Fn" ->"Fn"->"Info"->"Menu"
Scrolled down to "LENS EEPROM SAVE" and selected it. That made a copy of the existing code on the SD card
Scrolled down to "LENS ROM READ/WRITE" (did not enter debug mode)
Selected the locations and changed "C0" to "80", one by one, as indicated in the charts for the 16-50 lens. Before making each change, I verified that what was actually stored in that location was "C0" just to confirmed that I was changing the correct setting.
Exited from program.

I use a Mac so had lots of trouble getting a copy of the file and then changing the appropriate items in the matrix. This method was fast and simple. Probably took about 5 minutes. I bought the K10 just for this purpose and it was well worth the price. When my 50-135 fails I'll convert it as well.

Thanks for putting together this compilation UncleVanya. I spent lots of time reading and trying lots of options before I got to this one.

I have the same question but using the K10 and DA 50-135.

When I downloaded a backup of the lens file data (still in the SDM mode), it was saved as an .LNS file. When I opened it and modified it using NotePad++, the resulting file was a .txt file which the K10 would not transfer to the lens. How do you get around this?

Thanks.

Mike

AMG2000, can you post a copy of that file before you added the "txt" extension? I've discovered, at least on my Mac and with my K10, that once any of these LNS files are converted to "txt" by adding a ".txt" extension, they don't go back to "LNS" files when the "txt" extension is removed. The file name returns to "LENSEEP.LNS" but it remains a "txt" files, instead of reverting to a "Unix Executable File" which is what I think they should be with a LNS extension.

I'd greatly appreciate your help. I don't have a PC so I can't use to Notepad++ to make the changes myself. I suppose I could change the code line by line in the camera, but I'm not sure how to do that.

Thanks.

Mike

Sorry, I meant to link to only this post. I have not tried it myself, but it seems to address the concern:

No need for 1.30. Do the following with 1.31:

In the root directory of your memory card create or copy a text file named

MODSET.TXT

with only one line in it:

[OPEN_DEBUG_MENU]

After inserting card back to the camera, to enable debug mode do the following:

1. Switch camera off.
2. Open card door and leave it open.
3. Switch camera on -- debug menu shows up.
4. Close card door.
5. Left/right to enable debug mode.
6. Press OK to confirm.
7. Go to Set-Up menu, go to the end and Set-up will change to TEST MODE menu, AF TEST option is there with Focus Corr inside.

To disable debug mode:

1. Switch camera off.
2. Open card door and leave it open.
3. Switch camera on -- debug menu shows up.
4. Close card door.
5. Left/right to disable debug mode.
6. Press OK.

Note: you can permanently leave MODSET.TXT file on your card.

Have you tried the solution shown here: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/128474-need-k10d-f...rs-1-30-a.html

I have k10 with v1.0. Appreciate your feed back on whether the recommended process works, before I upgrade to v3.1.

Thanks.

Thanks for passing this along, djseeram. My 50-135 just died and I'm getting ready to try it. Since you don't enter the debug menu with this method, what do you do after modifying the lenseep to exit from this state and return the camera to its normal functions? Or do you still wind up in the debug menu, but that you just get there without going through the first couple of steps that Clover talks about?
