K-5 and Metz 58 AF-2

I had £900 spare just recently and I was considering a K3! Wish I had bought it now, although I am going to upgrade to full frame next year. I've been waiting for a Pentax full frame for so long, I cannot wait any longer now. I have been wandering around the house today using it on manual and it isn't that difficult if you have the 'zoom' set to auto in the flash settings. As always though, the home photos are coming out pleasing. I think I need to just tell everyone to get married at my house!

Thanks for the reply. Those images were examples of me trying to get the right settings before the wedding. They are not actual photos I will use.

Fortunately I have a selective memory and I will ignore your 'axe against fingers' and the encouragement to stop taking wedding photos. Maybe I didn't explain well so I will take some of the blame for you being a little un-friendly. Generally I get good photographs. Clients are always happy with what I produce. The fact of the matter is I want to become better, I don't think my 'good' photos are acceptable to me, but I have reached a point where I can't fathom what I need to do with my setup to make my photos better lit. I have attended weddings with plenty of photographers who use wireless flash on tripods. I do not like that method. When I see their photos (1000's of them), many are not correctly lit. And I think it is a waste of time to take thousands of photos to get a good 500. Plus not every wedding affords the time to set up this way.

What modes I use my camera/flash in do not determine whether I am a 'professional' or not. If a chauffeur uses an automatic gear box, power steering or abs, does that make him an unprofessional driver? No it doesn't!!

I am attaching one of my better photos, using the K5 in Av and P-TTL in the vain hope it might make you retract the insults!

Thanks for the reply. I have heard of this problem and thought I wasn't suffering so badly as in close quarters it works perfectly. At home, when I practice, it works perfectly. I have tried using the flash in the Auto mode. And it throws out the same good results. Just on location I start to struggle. I never use auto ISO! I'd rather die.

I am terrified to use my flash in manual mode. I can see myself in a situation where I can't provide any images at all and I do not want to be in that position. I am comfortable using my camera in manual though and will give this a try combined with the Auto flash mode.

Could you please give me any tips for using the flash in manual mode? I am just looking now and it shows I can still use 'auto zoom'....

I really really need some help.

I have started photographing weddings over the last few years. And the volume is slowly increasing. But I am having massive flash issues.
I use a pentax k5 with the latest firmware and a metz meccablitz 58 af 2. I swap between a tamron 18 - 250 and a sigma 50mm. Generally the light is better with the sigma. The light I get is too strong when I shoot with it pointing straight forward, but when I bounce, I get varied results, even when I don't change anything. I have a lightsphere type diffuser that I have used previously and that made things generally worse. A wedding I have just got round to post processing from last weekend and around 90% of the photographs I am having to adjust exposure and whites in RAW.

Does anyone else use this same set up and do you have any tips for me? It's getting to the point where I just feel like giving up because I cannot win! I've attached some examples of when I was trying to find the right settings in the ceremony room.

This was taken at Chester Zoo whilst we were sat beside the Giraffe enclosure eating our butties. I didn't like the photo so much until I processed it to a black and white image. With a small levels adjustment the clouds started to come out. (Process - Camera Raw WB -> Photoshop Sharpen + Black and White + Levels.)

Taken at the Strid, Yorkshire, UK. It has uploaded 'soft' but looks pretty sharp when I view it on the desktop. Confused a little.

Dust :(

First off, I know I should post to the Samsung DSLR sub forum but I believe this is relevant to be in here as the Samsung and K20D have the same functions for this, or so I am told.

On three different lenses I get two very visable specs of dust in the same place every time but they're not visible in the viewfinder. To me this would initially send me straight to the sensor for a dust check. I run the dust check and it shows the white screen with no apparent black marks. Even looking in the same area (flipped upside down) as they appear on the images there's still no marks indicating dust on my sensor. So I run the sensor clean whilst my camera is inside my mini macro studio (I am told this is the least likely place for dust transfer) and inspect the sensor with a magnifying glass. I see no dust/dirt/anything what so ever on my sensor. Am I missing it? Can it appear on an image bigger than it actually is? I used a rocket blower with one blast of air but it is still there. What can I do other than take it for cleaning?

Someone has told me that when the door opens to reveal the sensor, that there's two filters covering it so I can use a brush, I do NOT want to put a brush anywhere near the sensor.

Can anyone help/offer tips?

Dust Alert

Thank you.
I had it switched on manual focus.
Why doesn't it say in the user manual that it needs to be in auto focus?

I got a reading and the sensor is clear. So what confuses me now is that with two different lenses I get the same identical dust pattern.
The dust might have been on the sensor but I ran the sensor shake a few times whilst pointing the camera to the ground last night. It looks like that has ridden it of the dust.

For some reason my GX-20 will not let me select the dust alert to show me that white image to see if there's any dust on my sensor.
I have a lens on, full battery, empty memory card.
I have checked the manual and it is more or less useless.
Can anyone help?

Thanks.

GX20 Battery Grip

I have fastened mine so tight! It moves a tiny tiny bit.
It was cheap because the seller made a mistake. Instead of putting $220 they put $120.
They still sent it as it was there mistake so I am so happy. I am still worried it is not genuine though as the on/off on the grip moves alot easier than the one on my camera, but saying that my camera has just had that bit replaced during a repair. But if there was no price error by the ebay seller, I would've paid near enough the retail price of it here when it was sold (£135)

GX20 Grip - Charging

So what is the DC input for? I don't fully understand why it is there other than to power something.

My cousin has a Sony DLSR and the grip holds both the batteries so it is just a matter of sliding them out. I think I am just going to keep my spare out and only put it in the camera when I think I am going to need it. I am glad I only paid £71 for it!

Wow seriously? So everytime I want to charge my inner battery I have to remove my grip? This is a bad design.

I ordered one too from the same ebay seller. I got it quite cheap too. I think they made a mistake with the selling price. I got mine for £70 (after currency conversion)

Do you have a problem with the camera moving a slight, and I mean very slight, when you hold the grip? I am still wary of it being a fake and so I am contacting samsung tomorrow to find out.

GX20 Grip - Charging

Hi,

I have just received my grip and was wondering about the battery charging.

Because one battery stays in the camera, is there a way of charging the batteries using the AC port in on the side of the camera?

I don't want to have to keep taking the grip off to charge the batteries. I don't understand why Samsung/Pentax didn't use the same method as other manufacturers and have both batteries in the grip.

Thanks.
