For me, the K-7 body design is a Pentax milestone. A great button layout with all important controls within the reach of your right hand without requiring any contortions. Too bad it took another release to pair it with a sensor of similar high quality.

You are correct, my bad. The comments about MILC sales dropping made me mix the lines up. The graph is then correct, but then I don't understand the comments. CIPA only provides production and shipment numbers, not sales information. Those value numbers that they report represent the value of what is being produced/shipped.

What data are you plotting there exactly? Because the CIPA data for December 2019 does not match your graphs.
December 2019 data: http://www.cipa.jp/stats/documents/e/d-201912_e.pdf
Fixed lens shipments: 411,274
ILC shipments: 640,714
SLR shipments: 302,449
MILC shipments: 338,265
So MILC shipments > SLR shipments for December 2019, not the other way around as your graph shows. Did you copy paste data from the wrong column?

Yes, DSLR shipments are still greater than MILC shipments: 4,504,987 units vs. 3,956,503. This is mainly because of the Americas and also because in Europe DSLRs maintain a smaller lead. But in Asia the MILC units have already exceeded DSLR ones. Anyway, the value of MILC shipments exceeds that of DSLR shipments: 282,369,840 thousands Yen vs 174,635,831. And the market value is the more important part, because that's what drives the profits of the makers (everyone also agreed that MILCs are cheaper to manufacture than DSLRs, hence they are clearly more profitable now).
I have never looked at CIPA lens data before. But where do you see the breakdown between MILC and DSLR? They only do a sensor format breakdown: FF and higher vs cropped formats.

They're certainly not in bad shape. But I don't think they're in their top shape either. They used to own ~50% of the SLR market. That will probably end up looking like 30% in the MILC market. 30% is not bad, but it's not as good as 50%.

A 58mm can be interesting to use on APS-C and MFT. On APS-C it gets you close to an 85mm equivalent and on MFT close to a 120mm, both of which are interesting to use.
But lenses with smaller focal lengths than 50mm may be less exciting to use on the smaller formats. I didn't have much fun with 28-35mm lenses on Pentax APS-C. Sure, the 31mm was fantastic, but that was an exception to the rule.

The plotted graphs show that the MILC volume has been steady from 2012 to 2019. What happens in one month or another does not matter if the yearly volume doesn't change much.

Now that they decided to change direction, they are picking speed. But they waited a bit too long and gave Sony an opening (and even allowed Nikon to announce before them - I did not expect that!). It will be interesting to see where they end up once the dust settles. I doubt that they'll have as big a lead in the market as they used to have in the (D)SLR era.

It might help if you listed which lenses you have, i.e. which focal lengths. Also, which focal lengths do you prefer shooting at.
If you don't want AOV to change, go for a full-frame model, whatever you can find at an affordable price.
If you don't mind AOV change and might even benefit from it, pick one of the smaller formats, based on how favorable the conversion would be.
All cameras made after 2013 have competent sensors. IBIS performance will vary - it's noticeably less effective in larger sensors than in smaller ones. You may want to check the handling and controls as well. What looks good on paper may not feel well in hand. Especially if you are used to the nice handling of a Pentax camera.

I don't think there is any niche left for Pentax to fill anymore. I kept hoping that Ricoh would make some bold move, but they missed all opportunities. If you want a great mirrorless camera today, there are plenty to chose from, you don't need to wait for Pentax to produce something. Many years ago, I commented that Pentax may become the Leica of DSLRs, but they may not even be able to achieve that. They've just become experts at dying so slowly that they seem immortal! :)

Where do you see that? The mirrorless shipments are basically staying flat. The upgrade cycle is now longer, so the sales they lose because of that, they just manage to compensate with new customers or with customers transitioning from DSLRs.
Meanwhile, the MILC market value is now exceeding the DSLR one in all markets, including the Americas. It's only in unit numbers that MILCs are slightly trailing behind DSLRs still - but by the end of this year, that should change as well.

I am impressed to see this thread still going strong after so many years! I never expected it to last so long when I started it.
I have stopped visiting this forum in 2013 and I just decided to drop back again and see how things are going.
So, as my first post after a long break, I'd like to say:
Thank you to everyone that has contributed to this thread over the time! May you keep taking great images with your MFT equipment!
Back in 2013, there were lots of users that felt that the MFT format was rather pointless and were predicting its imminent death. Hence, it's really nice to see that all of you have proven them wrong through your continuous sharing of your MFT work. My own contributions are no longer available, because they were hosted on flickr, which I quit after the smugmug acquisition. I now share some images on ipernity, going chronologically through my output. I finished uploading my Pentax selections, but only started uploading Olympus samples. Here's one of the latter shots, which I may have posted here somewhere at the time (it's from 2012):
(Not sure why the image didn't get embedded - I used the IMG tags)
This is a rather special shot for me, because it reminds me of the first time I was able to use a Soviet rangefinder lens on a digital camera.

Yes, but who said anything about doing that? I am only interested in ILCs - I see investment in a camera with a fixed lens as a waste of money - with an ILC, I can at least reuse some of the investment with future bodies. Also, a Foveon MILC will never be "the next big thing in technology" unless the Foveon technology itself sees a jump. At this point, it seems limited in terms of high ISO performance and I don't see that changing soon. Panasonic's newly announced sensor technology sounds more promising at this point.

Not if the lens is a prime as you would get with the DP2M. The Panasonic pancakes are very small - look up images online.
I've been interested in the Sigma DP cameras since they first introduced them. There were several times when I almost purchased one. But they were expensive for what they offered back then and they still feel that way now. I am waiting for the day when they'll realize it might make sense to produce a MILC around that Foveon sensor.

I had seen the WG-1 and WG-2 cameras at Target for some time now, but this weekend I was surprised to see an X-5 as well. Looks like Ricoh is pushing to get more Pentax cameras in B&M stores.

Well, those other aspects are very important, but not to photography (which is the subject here, rather than Apple's business). It is the availability of cameras in phones that is killing the compact camera market. And then there is the social aspect of being able to share photos online on Facebook, for example, which is now impacting the design of cameras by increasing demand for features like WiFi connectivity. The classic camera companies are now in reactive mode.
Well, they understand more than others. You can remote control your NEX from an iPhone. The fact that we see this kind of technology integration from Sony, rather than from Canon, Nikon, or Pentax is what I was pointing out.
Yes, Olympus is part of the classic camera companies and Sony had inherited Minolta. But Olympus strikes me as the only exception here. Sony was not really transformed by acquiring Minolta - they absorbed it and products like NEX are the result of Sony engineering more than of any kind of Minolta product legacy. So I am aware that Olympus makes an exception, but I can only write so much in one post.

Point taken. Although, as you can see from the other reply to your post, trying to define what kind of company they really are is open to debate. :)
Yes, you can argue that, but that is not what they were mainly known for, unlike the camera companies with which they were being compared here.
The point is that historical camera companies (and by historical, I mean those that had a significant activity during film era) are no longer innovating in this field. And that is mainly because the biggest names, Canon and Nikon, are too concerned about rocking the boat by producing radical new camera designs. So the new designs pop out from outside this restricted circle: Apple, Olympus, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, Lytro. Or from companies that are trying to grow again, like Fuji.

Easy - they don't have a Steve Jobs. None of the camera companies have such management today. Actually wait - Apple is now a camera manufacturer - the iPhone is killing compact cameras. What does it tell you when a software company eats away market from camera companies?
So which one do you root for here - Sigma or Pentax?

monochrome was talking about "#3 slice of the market", not just about DSLRs. Pentax is probably at #6 right now, after Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus and Panasonic. Not sure how they compare with Fuji. Really, the only brand they dominate in consumer camera sales is Sigma, which ironically makes more K mount lenses than Pentax itself. :)

This will happen with all mirrorless cameras and adapted lenses because the camera cannot control the aperture of the adapted lens, so it has to display the result using whatever aperture is already selected on the lens.
MILCs should offer this behavior with native lenses as well, but for some reason, they don't always offer this choice. It's funny how in this case, it's better to adapt the lens than to use it on the native mount.
If you also have M42 lenses, that would be another reason to avoid the K-01 - you can get adapters that lock properly onto the mount with the NEX.
