Well thanks all I went ahead and ordered a ifootage CF cobra 3 mono pod, a large ball head, a pan fluid head, and a gimbal, with wimberly plate, along with a new CF tripod w/ bowl for leveling. This should get me heading down the right path, I want all the heads so I could shoot wildlife, macro, landscape and basic moon & Astrophotography. Shooting models for years, this was something I haven’t focused on. Oh and I picked up a new “to me” lens. The D-FA 100mm f2.8 macro WR. I haven’t owned a good macro lens, and I wanted something basic to see if I like it.

I’ll be 50 this year, and I fell off a cliff 15 years ago, broke my leg into a billion bits, I can walk perfectly fine now days, but when I have been hiking too long or weather gets too cold, I really start to feel it. So it’s more of a me thing. Which makes me realize it’s better to design my life about easier more and more.

So much good information here, so much to digest, I haven’t picked up a new tripod in years and never owned a mono pod. So yeah I love hearing everyone’s opinions and really love seeing the images of your setups. As I age I’m starting to think more and more about these options, and the tech has come so far in the last couple decades. YouTube is good for basic info, but you don’t know who’s being paid what to promote what, but I find it more important to see what fellow photographers are actually using.

Yeah I’m keeping 2 of my bags, for heading out and about.

My K5 IIs has its own case, with more of the third party apsc lenses, sad but my DA 55mm 1.4 (which was my favorite lens for the The K5) AF died, so it didn’t make the cut.

Don’t even get me started on all my studio gear, that’s a whole other set gear. Alien Bees mostly, ABR800 ring strobe, vagabond and tons of stands, soft boxes….

Thanks, Yeah we (me and the wife) had to travel a bit to shoot, but it was a nice day outing, found a nice dirt road in the middle of nowhere.

I never realized how much I had until this past weekend. Putting it all in hard cases now. It was in a dozen bags.

That’s what I was thinking too, when I got it all out, but even some stuff is still not pictured, like my old K1000 and a few others

Thank you, trying to organize it all is challenging.

This is some good info, in the past I always used a tripod for still shots like moon/eclipse…, but I bought this lens to start messing around with shooting wildlife. When it came in I noticed how heavy it was, which got me thinking, monopod. Being a little more mobile. I’m leaning towards a carbon fiber monopod, but yeah the bigger question is the head. I was noticing the different styles of gimbal heads, like the wimberley MH-100, but I was scratching my head thinking, does this really help? Or is it better to just have standard type of head like the ifootage K5.
Never really having played around with shooting wildlife, I figured I would come here and see what my fellow Pentaxians were using.

If you have used both style heads I would love to hear your thoughts between them. I plan on being on the go when I retire, so monopod just seems logical.

I would love to see shots and details of others monopod setups (and tripod) for using with the D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6.

Looking for all price ranges, but what works best for you.

Mine died after shelving it for a couple years, was my favorite lens, I wish I could figure out a fix for it. I don’t want to buy a new one knowing it will happen again. Seems ridiculous that you can’t shelf a lens, life happens. That is definitely a design flaw built into these lenses. So I will never buy another one of these styles lenses, if there was an easy fix then it wouldn’t be so bad.

Same here, I haven’t used that lens for about a year, and now the camera won’t recognize it at all, it goes straight into manual lens mode, and in that mode getting the F stop below 2.0 is non existent.
I haven’t gotten mine to “wake”back up yet.

This might be the straw that breaks the camel and forces me to finally look at other brands, I have been loyal to Pentax for decades. Sad really.

Model: Nikki King
Photographer: Sam Rambo

Shot using a Pentax K5 IIs, and the 70-200mm 2.8 lens,
focal length of 70mm
f 6.3
Iso 80

I always manually set my white balance, for the temperature that I'm looking for to bring out the right colors and tones.
I shoot Jpg, and get it right in the camera, that way you have very little work in post production (maybe a min or two). The only reason you will ever find me shooting raw, is if my client is looking for a "green" factor to the file. Up until 2012 I use to shoot Raw+, I started to ask myself why, I never used the raw file? If you get it right in the camera you will never really need that raw file.

Additional lighting is produce by a ring flash strobe, and balanced with the natural lighting of the sunset. Sun flare was brought in naturally to add that additional pop to the image, something to make it stand apart from normal "sunset images". It's actually a rather easy technique to reproduce. it's all about timing, location, and the angle of the shot.

Other tips:
Oil for the models skin
water for that wet look
position the model so you get a natural rim light from the sun, and position it so the sun is just off shot, to pull in that nice subtle sun-flare.
Let the hair fall naturally, so many models try to brush the hair out of their face, you have to tell them to let it fall across the face, it adds to the over all image.
A good make up artist is always good to have on hand.
And center yourself on your subject, if you are too high, it will make them look weak, and if you are too low it will make them look too powerful.
You want the viewer to connect with the subject, so never lose the eyes.
Happy shooting
