Dear Pentax,
Hope you are working on a mirrorless rangefinder style APS-C camera with a hybrid (electro-optical) viewfinder ala X100S... Would like one with a 21mm f2 lens, thx.
Cheers,
M

After much trial and error I have come up with the following travel kit combos, depending on the trip:
Light: k-30, 12-24, 40, 70, mini-tripod (table top), small messenger bag. No laptop! Post processing done later.
Medium: k-5/k-30, 12-24, 40, 55, 50-135, Af540Z + mini-tripod, 2x cactus V5s, Honl 8in snoot, Trekpod, MS Surface Pro, medium messenger bag
Heavy: As needed, usually requires a roller bag.
All options include WG-3 GPS, CPLs, NDs and remote.
Last trip was with 'light' and my back (and wifey) was much happier. Could subsititute UWA zoom with the 15 but I find 15 just not wide enough in my travels. Found the 18-135 images unacceptable (for me) and hence sold it. With the 'light' kit I could walk around with the 12-24 attached most of the time and have the two primes ready when needed.
As for the 12-24, I find it one heck of a lens for off the hip and unusual angle shooting. And for the obligatory cheesy-family-with-point-of-interest-in-background shot. These are typically done with exposure bracketing (to bring out background detail, which are usually overexposed) as I don't lug a flash for this setup. Makes for an interesting photo journal!
Regards,
M

That is sooo tempting... I am seriously considering dumping all my Pentax gear but those damn pancake lenses makes me hesitate. If only Pentax would post some teaser pics of their new FF!

But the thumb rest placement is different. I much prefer the BG-2 over the BG-4. Actually, I prefer the overall gripped k20D's ergonomics over the gripped k5's.

Right. I suppose I can wait. I haven't bought any Pentax products in the past 18 months except for a pre-loved battery grip.
If an FF is announced I'll finally relieve the cash that's been burning a hole in my pocket. I'd love an FF-compact LX-1 (a la Sony RX100; big bro to the MX-1) for portability, and a FF K-3 plus a bunch of DFA* primes.

Exactly. Options would be a 35mm/2 or a 43mm/1.9. A 35mm/1.4 a la Summilux would be mega.

Thanks!
Such a product should build on Pentax' strengths:
1. Cachet of the Limited lenses, particularly the 31. It would be a masterstroke if they can use a similar optical formula and deliver the same image quality.
2. Compact, classic design with good ergonomics (K-01 is arguably an exception).
3. For (ab)using in the outdoors.
But then again there is that certain playfulness with the recent multitude of colourful DSLRs, so I'd like one in screaming metallic orange. With brass top and bottom plates.
Cheers,

My wish is for a weatherproof, AA filterless full frame compact with a built in OVF and a fixed 31mm f1.8 lens. An LX-1.

PS.
My DA*50-135's SDM motor failed a couple of weeks ago. I have sold off all of my SDM lenses except this one.
I know you've recently 'fixed' the SDM issue but not acknowledging it and doing nothing for so long is not acceptable. Hmmm, did I just rationalise the final straw?
Pentax, you have a lot of work to do, so good luck.

Dear Pentax,
It's a bit depressing to read all these negative posts about your uncertain future in the DSLR market.
But then again I need to earn money, and your flash issue is the final straw. The K-5's known tendency to overexpose when an Af540 is mounted and tilted has reared its ugly head again. I thought I had a work-around but it was to no avail. My last paid comission as a result was a waste. I should have used a Nikon with its dependable flash system.
And I need tethering, and while the k20D suffices at the moment with its clunky interface, it's getting long in the tooth.
I am now estimating how much I will get from selling my gear and moving to a system that better suits my needs. Pentax, thanks for the good products that has allowed be to earn a crust as well as capture great memories of my family, but you are painfully sloooooow to move with the times and you give little indication of where you are heading.
I wish you all the best, but if you provide information on plans for new flash systems, tethering, releasing APS-H or even 135-format DSLRs, increasing flash sync speed, better video capability etc. just to keep up on lost ground, I'll stick with you. Otherwise goodbye Pentax, and hello Nikon!
Cheers,
M

Forum: Pentax K-5 & K-5 II

Right, decided to use the k-5 with the 540 in an evening gala on the weekend (unpaid work, so a chance to sort it out in a 'realistic' setting).
This is what happended:
- First 5 shots FEC = 0, blown out images.
- Got frustrated, gave the flash a smack with my palm, heard a 'click' from the hot shoe.
- Next 5 shots, dialled FEC to -1.5, all images underexposed.
- Confused, dialled FEC to 0, all images for the rest of the night properly exposed.
Obviously, administering corporal punishment on the flash worked. But how? Previously I assumed the flash was properly seated with the usual push from the flash hot shoe and rear plate. Did my smack align the contacts properly or do something else? This warrants further investigation.

Found this thread after I used my k-5 with my af540 for the first time (I usually use the k20D for most of my photography, including flash, and the k-5 as my knock-about with the DA40 permanently attached).
As a side note I absolutely detest the egonomics of the k-5 and wish that the k20D was updated with the Sony sensor and Af module. The k-5's four-way button functions are rubbish and is a backward step from the k20D's. The k-5 live view button gets in the way and the Af select dial is a disaster. For paying jobs I use the k20D. Probably the only reason I use the k-5 is that it's smaller.
Oookay gripe out of the way. Yup, it seems that the metering of the k-5 with the 540 mounted and tilted doesn't work properly, regardless of metering mode. Which is a shame because I assumed it would work just like my trusty k-20D, which exposed perfectly all the time when using bounce flash. Ended up dialling -1.5 EV FEC to get a satisfactory result but blew it when switching the flash and camera back on to take rushed shots, as the flash reverts back to 0 FEC.
Not happy. Hopefully Pentax fixes this issue with the next body, making it number 5 on my wish list:
1. Move the Lv button away from the four-way controller. Having it as part of the preview dial around the shutter would be better.
2. Make a larger, easier to use Af mode dial - the dial on the k20D is heaven in comparison.
3. Make a latched SD card door. The slider door is a joke and is prone to open when handling the camera.
4. Have a dedicated exposure bracketing button.
5. Sort out the bounce flash and camera metering issue.
Heck, just make me a k20D update with a full frame sensor and new Af module and be done with it. And yes, 16 zones for metering is good enough for me.

My current kit:
Ultra wide zoom: DA 12-24/4
Standard zoom: DA* 16-50/2.8 - I don't use it such these days....
Standard primes: DA*40/2.8, DA* 55/1.4
Tele primes: DA*70/2.4, DFA 100/2.8 Macro WR, DA* 300/4
Tele zoom: DA* 50-135/2.8
... Had the DA 18-135 and sold it. Now looking at a DA* 60-250/4. or the DA* 200/2.8. Choosing between the two is agony.

Therefore:
Digital APS-C (k-5) = 23.70mm x 15.70mm = 372.09 mm2 = 3.72cm2
Digital 135 (say, theoretical k-3) = 35.55mm x 23.55mm = 837.20 mm2 = 8.37cm2, scaled exactly 1.5x for each linear dimension of k-5 sensor
Equivalent k-3 sensor at the same pixel density of a k-5's 16.28 MP sensor = 16.28/3.72 * 8.37 = 36.63 MP
Uncropped k-5 @ 16.28MP (16.08 MP effective) = 4928 x 3264 pixels at max. image size
Uncropped k-3 @ 36.63 (36.19 MP effective) = 7392 x 4896 pixels at max image size

Haven't caught up with all the discussions (I'm just back from holidays). From the title of the thread is the new 'mirrorless' going to be an FF SLT?
I assume that this would be the case if K-mount and its register distance is going to be retained.

You know what, I'm not fussed between APS-C and 135 in sensor size. I just need a bigger, brighter OVF. Surely there's a good engineering solution for that for APS-C!

2012:
135/APS-H K-3 ?
APS-C K-5 mk2 / K-30 ?
I'd buy the former.

Dear Pentax,
I thought APS-C was 'good enough' until I looked through a D700 and a D3x. Looking through an APS-C viewfinder is like having tunnel vision.
All other issues are minor or trivial to me, and I find the larger view probably the biggest factor in my pending switch, most likely to a D800.
Hurry up Pentax!
