Got a Vivitar badged 28mm F2 Kiron lens for...wait for it...17$.
Top right corner:
for 17$ this is quite unbelievable.
First, some obligatory images of my cat. @F2
And some outdoor shots.
The lens is museum quality, thanks to a random kind polish dude on ebay. This will be glued to my K-5 for a long time, only replaced by my 35mm F2.4 when I absolutely need autofocus.

Just to give more options :)
The K-7 at ISO 100 seems pretty amazing, apart from some colour noise in the shadows, which seem to be perfectly manageable.

Oh wow, I was slightly hungover when I saw that I won...now I need to find a worthy image out of my 100k+ image drive.
Thanks for selecting mine as the winner. :)

This deserved a version with less crop, slightly cropped still, only because I personally found the foreground a tad distracting and the castle didn't look 100% straight. Maybe I'm drunk, but here goes: PS, don't include mine in the selection, I'm way too late for the challenge. :) |

My only issue is the horizon, It looks like it's level, but looking at the rest of the image, it isn't. Probably because of the haze on the horizon, but somehow it ruins the image for me.

Great entries so far! Would anyone else like to strike up a version of this? The critique will be harsh and painfully true!

I think it might have something to do with the history of Pentax and Zenit. I know some of the Zenits actually dropped the M42-mount for the K-mount. And after the iron curtain fell here in eastern europe, Pentax was instantly the desirable brand. Only thanks to word of mouth advertising though. Pentax film cameras were the expensive/better alternatives, not that the general public could afford such things.
Now in the digital era, the average citizen does have some money to throw around + the old russian lenses laying around and a grandfather with a bunch of zenits/zorkis to boot. But what could you mount this stuff to? Easy answer, Pentax!
I think this has happened all across the ex-soviet union and Russia as well, but these people just don't visit forums like this a lot.
So as a general strategy for the Pentax brand in general? Might not exist. Only way would be some crazy affordable mirrorless full frame camera, that would use the full K-mount, with Sony esque video capability. But yeah, I wouldn't expect a stunt from Pentax... 🙈🙉🙊

Weird thing happened this summer, I was at Rally Estonia with my K-5 and a rented DA* 60-250mm (also brought my wife, but that's beside the point).
It was an official WRC promotional event...I saw a few Canonites, fewer Nikonians, lots of local journalists with Sony A7's and to my astonishment, a lot of Pentaxians (didn't really count the others). I avoided the main spectator areas and wandered about a lot, saw some other K-5's, some K-5II's, some K-3's one K-7, a K-x, a K-20D and lo and behold, there was an older gent with a K-10D as well.
So yeah, here in Estonia, Pentax/Ricoh has quite the presence these days, with one of the largest photo equipment resellers refusing to drop the brand, although I think the oldest model you can get right now is the KS-2. They even sell all of the current lens lineup + the 645Z and it's lineup. And on top of that all of the Pentax equipment they sell is also available for rent. (Used stuff, not the shelf products)
I really, really hope they don't drop Pentax.

While the flare looks interesting, the focus is a little off. If the subject was in focus, it would have more impact.

This is what I’d give an arm and a leg to get from Pentax. I know I’m not alone...this would be so much easier to market. Although I know the competition is steep, but K-mount lenses with Sony A7 series are currently hot potatoes. But third party adapters suck, so here goes...
SLR-style mirrorless with an included adapter for full K-Mount compatibility + Some mirrorless limited primes and zooms for extra smallness. Changeable grip sizes, like on the KP
Full-frame CMOS sensor
36.4 megapixels w/ 15-megapixel crop mode
3:2 as well as 1:1 aspect ratio
No AA filter
AA filter simulator
Shutter Speeds (Auto)
30s - 1/8000s (stepless)
Built-in GPS and Wi-Fi
Dust & weather sealed
5-axis sensor-shift stabilization (Astrophotography)
Maximum FPS: 7 (24 Frames RAW)
Articulated LCD: Tilting
Viewfinder type: Electronic
Viewfinder coverage: 100%
Viewfinder magnification: 0.78×
EVF Resolution: 2,359,296 dots (786,432 pixels)
Videography features
Format MPEG-4, XAVC S, H.264
SLog 2 & 3 capability
Modes
3840 x 2160 @ 30p / 100 Mbps, XAVC S, MP4, H.264, Linear PCM
3840 x 2160 @ 25p / 100 Mbps, XAVC S, MP4, H.264, Linear PCM
3840 x 2160 @ 24p / 100 Mbps, XAVC S, MP4, H.264, Linear PCM
1920 x 1080 @ 120p / 100 Mbps, XAVC S, MP4, H.264, Linear PCM
1920 x 1080 @ 60p / 50 Mbps, XAVC S, MP4, H.264, Linear PCM
1920 x 1080 @ 60i / 24 Mbps, AVCHD, MTS, H.264, Dolby Digital
1920 x 1080 @ 30p / 50 Mbps, XAVC S, MP4, H.264, Linear PCM
1920 x 1080 @ 25p / 50 Mbps, XAVC S, MP4, H.264, Linear PCM
1920 x 1080 @ 24p / 50 Mbps, XAVC S, MP4, H.264, Linear PCM
Microphone: Stereo / With mic & headphone jack
Speaker: Mono
Reliable Video AF akin to Sony A7III, doesn’t need to be as great, but needs to work reliably.
Storage
Storage types: Dual SD/SDHC/SDXC (UHS-II compatible)
Battery Life (CIPA): 670
Weight: 750g
Price: The FF version ~1500€ / APS-C version with a 12MP sensor ~800€
I know this would shoot Pentax in the leg as it’s a K-1 without a pentaprism. But would be a step in the direction that the world is actually moving. Although I know Pentax doesn’t follow the herd, but this would sell very well. Sony has s**t menus, Pentax has never been faulted for user friendliness :)
Edit: ahh missed an opportunity to call it DLX instead...

Looks very nice, color and exposure wise. But as others have said, it'd look so much better at a wider aperture setting. Instead of F4, you could have gone F1.7 which would have made the dog a lot more separated from the background. And additionally would have most likely produced a more pronounced vignette around the frame, which this also needs. :)

Thank you Zooland for hosting #312, now I get to host a lucky number 313 with an image that has always bothered me. I've tried many times to process this, ended up with some decent options, but never quite satisfied. So here goes.
My favourite lightning shot so far, taken with a Pentax K-M original file is PEF, but I also added a DNG for ease of use. Download DNG or PEF. If you choose to enter, the challenge closes at 2:00 PM (GMT+2) on the 3rd of November 2019. You can enter with however many entries you want.
Download DNG or PEF.
Happy post-processing! And may the odds be ever in your favour!

Alright, so I looked a bit deeper into the LX camera itself and found this image in the review section:
Digital LX is looking better and better + the thing weighed 570 g, which is making the sub-800g Pentax Full-frame digital camera quite possible in my mind. It can have a pentaprism, but not necessarily. Custom viewfinders would be great and I mean pretty perfect for video, as well as for general photography. LX also had custom grips, just like the KP has. Which would open up some custom rig options for video as well.
I say keep the dials like they were on the old LX and: - Add optional locking dials like the Fujifilm cameras have these days.
- Replace the film rewinder with an ISO dial.
- Add some customizable dials, front and back.
- Custom grip options.
- Custom viewfinder options.
- At least some good video options. (separate image profiles, smooth stabilisation, PDAF)
The thing would be pretty desirable already.
If not to say GOLDEN. |

Why is that silver, perfectly good QC passed, rear cap in your junk drawer? May I have your junk, please? :D
(I'm really bad with older bodies, is that a K1000?)

Bonus fact, saw 2 other Pentaxians visiting as well. :) One with a DSLR (didn't see exactly which one, but I think he's on the last photo) and the other was using a 6X7 (:o).

Sarcasm, I hope, but if not. What does the name have to do with anything? Yes, the name is derived from the shape of the pentaprism used in SLR cameras, but the ending deliberately looks like the Zeiss Ikon Contax. The name Pentax was actually a property of Zeiss Ikon until they sold it to Asahi Optical Co.
Why would they?- Apple isn't an imaging company. They don't produce any of their products anymore, they just design them on paper and send the specs to engineers across different manufacturing companies.
- Samsung doesn't focus on imaging. While they did produce DSLR's in the past, it has never been their bread and butter.
- Sony is ridiculously successful with their mirrorless A7 series cameras. Their aspirations with their A-Mount DSLR's showed them that they can't compete with the established brands, although the cameras weren't in any way bad, some of them you might actually call ideal. Hint, they actually used the Minolta A-type mount
- Lumix is actually called Panasonic, and they have actually produced DSLR's as well, I think the DMC-L10 was their last-ditch attempt. They opted to drop the bulk as well. Now they're probably quite happy where they're at.
- Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro...Nikon F-mount...need I say more? Hardly ideal, but they did produce a series of DSLR's.
Why I'm saying this? The companies you mentioned usually enhance and develop their product line based on their user base. That goes for their forums as well, but I doubt any of them have such a loyal and tight-knit community as Pentax has.
Pentax definitely listens to their user base as well, I have nothing against that, but I'd like to see the Pentax succeed properly in the digital age as well. The K1000 was the simpleton younger sister with removed features (self-timer, depth of field preview, film reminder dial, and the FP flash socket) from the Spotmatic F. Spotmatics were a big a bulky. Which of these actually defined Pentax in the film era? I remind you that the K1000 had a production life of 22 years (1976–1997).
We're really just trying to find the simpleton younger sister of the K-1 in the digital age. It doesn't really need to be mirrorless, but it needs to compete in the portability race and be full-frame.
