Vivitar 2x Teleconverter PK-A/R-PK - is it broken?

Hi - I just got one of these myself as a gift and I removed the evil Ricoh pin also! You are correct that it will not pass through the autofocus screw drive from the camera body... So if the seller misrepresented that, you may have an issue. But if he showed full pictures, he can argue that you knew what you were getting... just speculating...

However, it should work fine on our DSLRs (I'm using a K-x). One good thing about it is that it has the electrical contacts for "A" lenses. That means that the camera body can still comunicate with an "A" lens on the other side of this doubler - they are not all like that, so that's a plus.

I'm not sure about image quality - have not really evaluated it for that. But I did put an "A" lens on it and that seemed to work fine. If you got it for, say, less than $30 shipped, I think it's fine.... If you got it for over $50 and need it to auto focus... you may want to return it. Someone on this forum is selling a Quantaray auto-focusing teleconverter right now. If you go to the marketplace, he's posted pics which show the little screw drive.

If you keep this one, let me know what you think of it, image wise.

This may be kind of off topic, but I actually LIKE the way Mac's present slide shows... (It looks like some of you don't care for it much...).

Is there any freeware out there that emulates this? (Not web-based hosting, but a program you can download.)

Self-timer not available in HDR capture mode of K-x?

I agree. I was on a walk in a very low light environment and wanted to try out HDR... I had my beanbag with me and set my camera down on it to try HDR... Well, I found out that I could not set the timer... why?

I would have had to press down the shutte the whole time and because I was in low light, the shutter speeds would have been slow/long... The only way I could have done it would have been to use the wireless remote... which was in my car.

I can think of no technical reason why the timer can't trigger the HDR sequence. It just doesn't make sense. I guess now I'll make a habit of keeping that tiny remote with me... at least it's small.

Close up lens for a K1000?

I found the same thing... but I have not tried the tubes yet.

You could try to get one of those elusive Vivitar 28mm Close Focus lenses (good luck...). Or, you could try any generic 28mm - I think they all will generally focus closer than a 50mm.

I ended up getting a Sigma "Mini-Wide" II 28mm that advertized a "macro" feature - which was really just the abillity to focus close. I have not used it much yet, but it does seem pretty good... Actually I found out by comparison to the auto focus 18-55mm kit lens (K-x) that the kit can get even closer by using the zoom... so I don't know if the Sigma is any sharper or more capable - I still have to play with them more.

I finally get to post in the kit lens club!!! This was one of the first shots I liked with my new K-x as I was practicing. Unfortunately I was not expecting anything good, so I was set on 2mp resolution :( It's resized down even more, cropped slightly, and rotated for here. The hand is my brother's - credit to him! :)

I like street art - most of what I see is on trains... I take a different approach and like to compose color combinations from smaller parts of the painting. Here is an example from a section of train that was parked in our town for months.

Where can i find a Pentax Kx white bundled w/ 18-55 and 55-300mm kit lens?

Right - I wanted that exactly as well - because I wanted the white body and I knew I wouldn't be able to get the 55-300 that cheap - ever.

I ended up getting the white kit with the single lens... for a GREAT price (thanks to Amazon). I've used the extra to buy several cheaper lenses (mostly manual primes). I don't think you'll see the 55-300 for $200...

I ended up getting an older M200 f4 prime for a good price to play with while I decide if long lenses are for me...

Graystar - thanks for the info and reply....but this still leaves me with some questions.

What you described sounds like it might work with an "A" equipped lens. But with a fully manual lens, the camera body cannot set aperture at all, so would the P-Line selection work? The camera is metering wide open... so is the process to hit the green button for P-Line, then look at the LCD and manually change to the aperture suggested (on the lens, not the e-dial)?

So, what I've been doing is setting my aperture on the lens (M lens), composing, pressing the +/- button for the brief stop down and shutter suggestion, then taking the picture. I don't have to use the e-dial at all because it's picking a shutter speed.

The only other way I can think of - but I have not tried, would be to look through the lens, press and hold the green button with Optical Preview selected, observe the +3/-3 numbers in the viewfinder, turn the e-dial while still looking through the lens to try to get the number close to zero, release green button, then take the picture... would that work? The information at the bottom of the viewfinder is difficult for me to see sometimes, so I prefer to just click the +/- button once, then take my picture.

But everyone says they use the Green button with manual lenses, so I still feel like I'm maybe missing something...

(And for the OP, this situation exactly applies to using your manual 200mm.)

Thanks.
