Comments back:
Halfspin--shutter comparison side by side with K-5IIs: K-3 quieter, higher frequency click. Just different, not bad.
Stevebrot--concerning the USB 3.0: my computer (Mac Pro dual quad core)has USB 2.0. I've always downloaded directly from the camera as the SD cards were a bitch to get out of the K-5, K-10, etc. in my experience.
But now they seem to come out of the K-3 easier, but to me, it is much easier to plug in one cable, then the alternative method. Aperture recognizes the camera and does a perfect transfer. Unfortunately, USB 3.0 not in my future
until I get the new Mac Pro which won't happen in the near future. I already tried the smaller port of the USB 3.0, but is actually smaller than the PC/AV port on the K-5 and K-5IIs. That said, my "My Book" 4TB external drive has a cable that works.
Nonetheless, B&H are sending me a proper cable for the K-3 ($3).
Craig66--Very surprising that Ricoh can't throw that $1 item in the box! So be aware when ordering.
Matt_lin18--So far in comparison shooting (macro) I don't see anything noticeable except for a slightly larger file size. I do like some of the new dial setup and gadgetry, but after doing macro for 30 yrs., I always shoot in AV mode, with the lowest iso, attempting
to get the best depth of field for the subject. I do miss the 80 sensitivity of the K-5, but probably the 20% difference is not noticeable in the long run?
To be honest, the K-5 and K-5IIs did everything I needed. It is really a matter of keeping updated to the most current level of technology if one can afford it--but that can be a slippery slope, i.e., USB 3.0, but computer with a 2.0.
Stevebrot-- re. focusing in macro. I've always understood the technical side of this issue, but that doesn't keep it from being frustrating at times. Fun and games. One needs some kind of challenge.

Recd. my K-3 from B&H as my 70th birthday present to self. It joins my K-5 & K-5IIS photographic arsenal. As a Pentax user since 1965, a few comments:
Shutter sounds totally different than K-5.
Larger screen nice. Colours stand out in full sun.
File format preview and ability to change modes easily--great.
Only a few more mb [c. 28-31 vs. 25-28 (K-5)] on first series of shots, 25% greater mp doesn't = 25% more mb.
B&H didn't tell me my K-5 camera to computer cable would not work on the K-3, so had to order a second time. Yup, USB 3.0 has a different micro end.
Didn't find any problems in the K-3 user transition or back and forth.
Haven't tried out the video, but flowers in Macro don't move much, so never have used it on previous Pentax.
Don't see any difference in the autofocus speed or accuracy after 100 pics with a Pentax 50 Macro lens. Several times on white flowers it did the back and forth race, trying to find a focus point.
Miss the iso 80.
The grip on the K-3 seems no different than my K-5s?
For $749, a bargain, since the K-5IIS was almost $1300.
From what I can see, yet another great product from Pentax, errrrr....Richoh.

AF160fc Ring Flash issues

As a macro photographer I always use Av mode. Took a few blue mushroom pics and the darn thing decided it liked working with the IIs after all and now works fine. Machines%^&*()_
Thanks. Years ago I used a ring flash with my older Pentax, but when I got a K-10 and went to a 50mm macro and put my DFA100 in the drawer, I stopped using using ring flash. For some reason I thought I'd try it out
again. It works well with the 50mm macro, so when not in the jungle will start using it again after I buy some stock in lithium batteries.

AF160fc Ring Flash issues

My camera is a K-5 IIs. I have had a new AF160fc Pentax ring flash sitting here for 3 yrs. without use. I installed the proper batteries, the ready light came on in about 7 sec. as advertised. I set "A" on the aperature ring and "A" on the ring flash control head.
Took my first pic with no issues. Waited for 7 sec. to recharge and no ready light or recharge. Changed batteries. Took a successful flash pic again. Ready light and recharge again not occurring, i.e. no buzz. So, if I want the ready light to come on,
I must turn the flash switch off after each pic. Is there some camera setting I'm missing? Or???? This is my third Pentax ring flash and they all seem to be crapola. Any answers would be appreciated.

I have finally figured out the issue. Although i've never been into the status screen menu where there is enable or not, for some reason this box unchecked itself. How that is possible, don't know.
But I'm standing by my story. Now back in operation but with the new K-5IIs, who cares. Thanks for the suggestions.

Pushing the info brings up a table matrix of what options I have set. Flying a glass cockpit 737 had less options in the computer.
Thanks for your service Heie.

For some reason my K-5 LCD screen no longer shows data during normal shooting, but works for all other inputs, i.e. menu, info, etc. Have I somehow disabled it ?
If it is a mechanical failure, I'm lucky to have just bought a new K-5IIs which is great.

I've used Aperture for many years on two different Mac Pro machines. My wife uses it on her latest IMac. Much better than Iphoto. If you used it before, you know the capabilities of A2 and A3 is much better. It's a no brainer.

Bdery, you are absolutely right. Just tried it and it surely works as advertised, bu I/ve had no need to use it. I guess weak minds can only handle one variable at a time. With macro, my interest is often DOF, so concentrate on Av and don't want
any stray fingers making changes. Poor logic?

I did have a UV filter on and the lens was my new DFA 50mm macro. On the other shots I took in the series, the "ghost" was not evident. Just wanted to know the technical nuances. A little tampering gets rid of it. New pic. Thanks all.

It was set on "normal". I've never have use P and didn't even know there were options in the menu. As I've said before, you can own a Ferrari and be called Juan without ever competing at Le Mans.
Some day when I get tired of shooting Av, I might try something else, but when you're on the Mulsanne straight at 200 mph, leading the pack, why down shift?

Great info. Never knew this tidbit about setting P and see what it comes up with. Tried on my new DFA 50 macro thru a range of iso settings. It tried to maintain f5.6 then upward.
My DFA 100 tried to maintain f4 from iso 80 thru 6400. New info daily.

Great info. Thanks. I always shoot in AV mode (P-TTL), but checked other modes. In TV and TAV, the sync changes to 1/125. I'll check the k-5 manual (p.182) which I missed.
I am not a sophisticated shooter and hardly use the many capabilities of the K-5. But a fellow can still enjoy driving a Ferrari, even though his name is not Fangio.

In two days of shooting with the new 50 mm it is always 1/100 and two yrs. with the 100, 1/180. You are probably correct on the FOV theory. When very closeup, it forces you into a high
fstop so you don't white out. Most the time I use a Manfrotto gear head tripod for the tight shots and don't use flash. Thanks.

On my K-5 with the DFA 100mm WR macro attached, when the flash is popped up and ready, the time shown is 1/180 sec. With the same camera and my
new DFA 50 mm macro, the time is 1/100 sec. This seems counter-intuitive since the 50mm is closer to the subject for the same frame as the 100mm. Is there
something I'm not setting in the menu or ??? Yes, same f stop in my tests. It is probably a simple explanation.

All great information on GPS-like info. I've been considering this situation for 24 hrs. and came up with a $4 solution. If you have an IPhone, buy the Theodolite Pro app. I did and it is really
great. Here's what it does. First take a picture with the phone and it attaches all the data to the top left of the pic. Take a pic with the mail button and it turns it into an email you can
add notes to and send to yourself back home. It also has all kinds of angle gizmos and ties in to google maps. It also does track. But most important, it gives you lat./long in about 6 different formats plus elevation (m or ft.) along with the current corrections. So if you are at a site ready to take serious pics with the K-5, simply take a mail pic first with the iPhone, make your notes when its convenient and press into the forest. When you are back out, put the pic sequence nos. in the email and send. Or spend another $196 plus shipping and tag all...if it works at the moment and you don't want to use your attached flash and its not raining like a cow wizzing on a flat rock. This app uses cell phone inputs (when avail.)
flash.

Is the orange ball to the lower left of the sun considered a chromatic aberration or just a glass reflection which use of the hood might

The 35mm is surely great for the landscape aspect, but that much more difficult on the up close and personal. I'm liking my new

I will echo those above who say buy a used Pentax M 50mm 2.8 or M100 4.0. I have used both these for many years, only recently updating to new Pentax DFA 100wr and DFA 50 macros.
I've compared new and old glass and there is hardly a difference, just modern convenience and documentation of the f stop you used on each pic. One hardly ever uses AF on macro shots
unless you are blind. I will be selling my M50 macro soon on the marketplace.

Macro Quandry

Well a bit late for me to chime in, but macro on the cheap is something less than perfect. I fought the issue for many years using a variety of Soligor Zoom macros. Finally 15 yrs ago I gave up the $$ and bought a proper Pentax 100 macro. Last year when I upgraded to a K-5, I also upgraded to the DFA 100 WR. Wow, talk about a great combo. Because my work is something like yours in a wet kayak (photographing plants in rainy jungles, but yet need landscape) I just added this week, a DFA 50 macro. Now were on fire. This is a great, great lens and something which fills the macro and landscape functions, albeit not as wide or fast as the DA 40mm. So, when the bucks come your way or you get hooked on super sharp, 1:1 macro photos, you'll seek one or both of these superb lenses. Good luck with your new eq.
